DayZ standalone, amirite? Eh? Eh?
Then you're in luck, since the mod went viral the developers of Arma 2 have contacted the creator of the mod and since they're releasing Arma 3 soon they offered him a job to release a stand alone game based on the mod using the Arma 3 engine that will be sold separately from Arma 3.

So soon enough there will be a DayZ stand alone game and they're using the current DayZ mod as an alfa test for the up coming game.

But if it was stand alone you'd happily pay 30 bucks for the same game?

You're doing horrible, horrible things to logic. Stop. Go sit in the corner for 5 minutes or something and stop it.
I never said anything about paying 30 bucks for it, even if it was stand alone. See you in the corner. :)

Given the cost of licencing the engine, then rebuilding the game from the ground up; the idea that a standalone version would cost any less then 30 bucks a copy is absurd.

There was a thread about it several days ago.
I think what next to everyone said is that the mod is super hyper awesome, but since it went viral the game's community went down the drain.
I.e. expect to get shot many many many times while being flamed and told that while they desecrate your corpse in game they are also currently having sexual intercourse with you mother.
Yeah, pretty much this. When you reach outside a core fanbase you have the tendency to attract regular people, and probably douchebags.

DayZ is amasing. Except with the recent update... it made genuine, crouch by zombies stealth useless. Now it's all run to a building. Run out of it for the zombies to lose sight. It doesnt feel like a stealth game at all now...

The cost of licensing would be exactly $0, the guy that made the mod works at Bohemia Interactive (makers of ArmA). They've seen the sales, they've commented on how excited they're about it, I wouldn't be surprised if after ArmA 3 they give him a team and develop it as a standalone internally.

Yea but in that case they've a publisher, who's not funding it out of the goodness of their own heart. Chances are good it will still cost around 30 bucks.

If they keep it free until then, yeah. But in an E3 interview Rocket said what he'd like is to make an easily-installable standalone version, and then use a Minecraft model (increasing price as the game gets closer to release) to fund development. I'm guessing that's what's most likely to happen.

So is the notion I wouldn't wait for a sale. :p

Now, I could just buy Arma 2 when its on sale. But I won't. That would violate my very strong and principled stand against boxes of dirt. And I am not a flip-flopper.

LetalisK, 2012!

edit: my quote-fu is not strong.

Here's a fantastic two-part interview from PC gamer:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/06/22/day-z-arma-3-interview-on-left-4-dead-skyrim-player-emotion-and-in-game-disease/
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/06/23/day-z-arma-3-interview-optimization-map-design-radios-porting-day-z-into-arma-3/

Real talk, not marketing speak. Wish more developers were like that.

Well, I´ve watched quite a lot of Let`s Plays and other such stuff about it, and it really does look fun,e specially if you have a freind or two to play it with.
Tho the bugs look horrible as well, and the zombie animations and whatnot aren`t really lovely to look at ... Still, it`s a mod, so i suppose stuff like that is bound to happen.

But yeah, I´d love to play it. Waiting until Arma goes on sale.

It is a very neat concept for people who like that sort of thing, however this isn't a finished product by any stretch.
It's an unfinished mod built on a buggy expansion of a buggy game, my mate spent about 3 days on forums before it ran in a reasonable capacity.

But if it's actual zombie survival you are after this is the best thing out right now.

I wouldn't pay $30 for DayZ standalone, not in it's current form. Maybe $15.

As it stands I tried the Arma2 demo last night and it runs like shit on my PC, so I won't be bothering any. Since they might port it to Arma3 at some point, I'm happy to wait and see if it's still popular in a year or so when I get a new PC.

It´s still in alpha the zombies are basically the animal ai with a new skin and the ability to attack.
They still have to rewrite the pathfinding.

dayZ is..fun i guess, but grossely overhyped. ArmA2 by itself should get way more love.

in short: ArmA2 Warfare BE > DayZ
