Definitely leaning towards the 'exploitative marketing stunt' end of the spectrum on this one. Buthey maybe they'll suprise us and follow through on it for once... right?

My moneys on Flash

not wonder woman. while that actually would make sense without really changing the character, the news story specifically says a male superhero is the one coming out.

I agree, this feels like a stunt trying to capitalize on Obama's recent declaration. Reinterpreting a character is okay if it's done in an interesting way, but if you look at the history of comics, when decisions like this are made by the company heads and the writers are left to fill in the blanks, what you usually get is extremely bad to the point of embarrassing.
And I recently found an interview with a DC company head who stated directly that the reason they do shit like this is because, while it pisses off the fans, it also gets their attention and they often buy more comics just so they can see how badly it's fucked up and complain about it.
So yes, this is just a stunt to get more attention and make us buy stuff. So, to comic book nerds, can we please make this the time the stunt fails? If this stunt is as bad as it always has been in the past, don't buy it.

"DC announces a gay character (that in no way is competing with Marvel's announcement of a gay wedding)!!"

Okay? Thanks for letting me know? I'm sure it would have been more shocking to find out by, you know, reading a comic book. But now I'll know what to look for. Thanks, again?

Neh, if going by Arkham City, he has a thing for Catwomen and Talia Al Ghul.

OT: I'm guessing The Flash or Green Lanturn

However i would love it to be Beast Boy or Cyborg :')

For everyone saying "Aquaman" somehow i doubt it, remember he does like fish...
I'd say that going by Damien Wayne's existence Batman is into Talia Al Ghul.

If I'm restricted to characters not yet introduced in the new 52 it has to be Hawk Man.

He's part of the new 52, the 8th issue of his series comes out this week. So yeah...not him. Now that I think about I don't remember seeing plastic man in the new 52, so I guess I change my vote to him.

he and black canary have one of the best realtionships (for comic books, which doesn't mean too much)
It's easily the highest profile relationship of the DCU, and infinitely more interesting than any Marvel relationship. Screwing that up would be a real middle finger to the fans, and anyone with any sense about them.

Actually, they've clarified the statement to say this: 'One of our Iconic characters, not yet introduced in the DCNU, will be revealed as homosexual.'

So it won't be any of the major heroes, they've all been introduced already in the new DCU. Interestingly enough the new phrasing does not specify 'hero' it says 'character'. So either a villain or a supporting character is also possible.

My thoughts? Either Riddler, or Jimmy Olsen.

That's...interesting. Honestly, Riddler would be a better choice than anything I would have guessed. Batman villains are generally interesting and engaging, and the Riddler is no exception.

It just seems like a good fit that would increase diversity in the DCU without needlessly disrupting established facts for the sake of trying to increase diversity. It's sort of like how something clever can figuratively shake the earth, but literally shaking the earth rarely yields any clever results.

Don't you know that Batman has experience in that type of thing?

Good for you but until there's actually good reason to say it's wrong I'm glad we live in a world where we teach acceptance and tolerance.
There is substantial difference between "acceptance & tolerance" and glorifying something that is naturally wrong.
I accept & tolerate gay people. I have NOTHING AGAINST THEM. I would not mind if one slept in the same bed next to me if he (I'm male) had no misplaced feelings for me.
Once again, I hate people constantly trying to project homosexuality as a perfectly normal thing!
It is not normal. If it were, there would be a natural way to procreate between two individual of the same sex. So if you're not a snail, but rather a member of the primate order, then IT IS FU**ING NOT NORMAL.
So I'm not going to bother arguing past this point if you do decide to argue with me. But yes, it should be accepted as 'normal' because the reason that Acceptance & Tolerance hasn't existed for homosexuals before is because of the thought that it is not normal.

It was the same thing way back in the day with darker skinned people. They were treated worse then people of a lighter skin tone because people thought that it was not normal, amoral or they were xenophobic* towards these darker skinned folk. To put it bluntly, every type of person is not a asshole or douche or not normal because of one trait of theirs, be it skin color, sexuality, religious beliefs. Being Xenophobic towards people for a trait of theirs is dickish because your making up your mind on hundreds of thousands of people before meeting a single one of them.

Homosexuality, if treated as a normal love between two people is going to do more good then people thinking that it is not normal. Being xenophobic towards different breeds of people is going to do nothing but create bad blood between you and the breed of people.

While on the topic Sex is not for just reproduction, it is to show the bond between two lovers. Anyone who thinks that sex exists only for reproduction are missing the other side of that coin.

*Xenophobia is a term used for the fear of strangers. Xenophobic is just another way of using it, however as a verb.

PS. By 'Normal' I mean 'accepted all around.' Not quite sure what you mean by 'Normal' due to that being quite subjective, sorry if I got it wrong somewhere.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My guess is that it is Robin. Why a sidekick? Because he is the most iconic Superhero Sidekick for DC. So suck on that.

My gut says Wonder Woman. She is an Amazon living on an Island full of women after all, but they have already started her reboot series so maybe its too late to make this change.

It won't be Aquaman because that means eliminating any chance of seeing his Wife and Kid and some of the better story archs.

Its the same problem with Martian Manhunter as he had a family with a wife and children back home. That would require too much change.

It won't be Batman either, but maybe one of the Robins or Nightwing.

But seriously, now people are willing to send out an gay invitation to children? Really?
I don't mind gay people, but I resent presenting it as something normal.
What this does is acknowledge the fact that people who are attracted to the same sex exist; in our universe and that of the comic books. It's not trying to present it as "normal", by which you hopefully mean average or standard -- this is only one character out of hundreds, after all.

I hope they make it very incidental to the character, in the same way as none of the current roster go around screaming "Look at me I'm straight!". Sexuality shouldn't be a defining characteristic of anyone, in my humble opinion.

Probably Rorschach. Ya, he's probably gay. In fact all the watchmen are probably at least bi, except the Comedian of course.
It's how Alan Moore roles baby.

My first thought was the Flash. I dunno why. It just sprang to mind.

I don't mind superheroes being gay but I do mind if it's for the sake of PC or publicity at which point the character comes out gay and begins acting completely differently to the point where being 'gay' just seems to be their very personality.

I'll be peeved if DC don't handle this well.

Calling it now, on Cracked in a year or so - The 6 most shamelessly crowbarred sexual orientations in comics ;D

But seriously, it is a PC stunt, no doubt about it.

I do not know much about superheroes, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's the guy with a golden eagle hat-thingy in the article picture!
