To me, celebrities have always been somewhat of an oddity. Their exploits are documented to an absurd degree as every facet of their lives is published, be it interesting or not. In this modern world, to attain fame is akin to becoming some sort of deity, as the power and influence they wield is extraordinary.

Almost as if they have risen to a level above a mere mortal.

However, eventually they do all die. This should bring them back down to human level, but instead elevates them into a permanent place in the history books, especially if the death is particularly premature.

For some reason, I've never been able to sympathise with a dead celebrity. Perhaps its the slight Biblical quality, as I can smile with slight contempt and think, "O how the mighty have fallen!" The only exceptions so far have been when the three Ramones and Joe Strummer died (though none of them can really be counted as "celebrities").

My two-pronged question is this: How do you feel when you hear that one of Hollywood's darlings has died, especially if they were young? And more importantly, has anyone ever been very emotionally affected by the loss of a celebrity?

I was actually very sad that Heath Ledger did because it will be incredibly hard to feature the Joker in more movies unless they have found an extremely talented actor. But then nothing can really compete with his performance.

I think it's a shame if anybody dies, let alone a young person but I find it very tragic if a young, Talented actor were to go before their prime. James Dean, Natalie Wood, River Pheonix.

I was particularly sad at the loss of Heath Ledger. Not only was he becoming something of a family favourite but it was the fact that he was only starting to show us what he was capable of. The saddest thing about his death however was that his last completed role was that of a psychotic clown. Hardly the swansong he deserved

They are people, even if they are followed by morons who worship them. That you have fun in their death is just plain wrong.

If I felt hate for a celb, then I don't feel that sad for them when they die, but never happy.

Generally speaking don't care but this year we saw Paul Newman and George Carlin shuffle off life's game board. Admittedly they were both old but they were both amazing people.

Carlin helped breakdown public taboos by refusing to back down over what was and wasn't right to say in public.

Newman was a goddamn philanthropist (and that salad dressing is mighty tasty).

Contempt and happiness are two completely different emotions. I never said I derive any pleasure out of it.

George Carlin fan here, too. I felt his passing on was a major loss; but ultimately, he made his mark damn hard, which made me feel he might've been content in his blatant dickery of the public eye. Apart from that, celebrities are usually people too, and their moving on is no lesser - and, for that matter, no greater - than the normal man.

How I feel depends on two things, one is how I feel about the person. Are they someone who I liked, disliked, fucking hated or someone I have tremendous respect for? The second is the circumstances of the death. For the first category there is George Carlin. He was and still is my hero so when I heard of his death I cried a little (and I'm not usually one for tears) I find the world a far sadder place without him in it. For the second part there are Heath Ledger and Anna Nicole Smith.

I never liked Ledger until the Dark Knight, I didn't hate him and I thought he was an okay guy but none of his films really did it for me or showed off his acting talent. Then came the Dark Knight; what I love about his performence in the film and why I gained so much respect for him is that he was a man who was previously billed on teenage girl sex appeal and here he is playing a villan and doing a damn good job of it.

But more than that he plays a character whose face is obscured and is disfigured under the make up. I did by the way give him some respect for being able to be an actor and play a role where he kisses a man; and people constantly asked him about the role and how it would affect his teen girl fan base; but since I couldn't stand the movie it didn't matter. But the thing about his death was just so shocking and unexpected that my reaction to his death was, "Wait, what the fuck?" It was only later that I realized how wrong I'd been about him.

Now Anna Nicole on the other hand I didn't really give a shit and finding her dead of mysterious circumstances wasn't mysterious at all to me.

When Arnold and Stallone die I'm gonna be sad too but in a different way; they're just such a part of culture it would be weird to have them gone.

Heath Ledger. He was just getting famous, and he was an amazing actor, and he would've surely been great in his future movies.

George Carlin. Well, yeah, scroll up, some people have said what I would say.

Basically those two. I don't pay much attention to the whole celebrity thing, especially their deaths.

It seemed to me like there was no end to celebrity deaths in '08. I was looking at a list the other day and completely forgot some of them.
Sir Edmund Hillary, Brad Renfro, Roy Scheider, Arthur C. Clarke, I could go on for several more lines.

Paul Newman was a great actor with a lot of great movies to his name. Cool Hand Luke is one of my favorites.

Edit: I guess I should answer the question posed in the OP. No I don't feel sad when an actor dies. I didn't know him or her personally, so why should I? They wouldn't shed a tear for me or my loved ones. Of course that doesn't mean I'm happy if a celebrity dies, it's sad when anyone dies.

Well, celebrities are just like us normal people, only they dont have to address the same laws as we do, they cant get speeding tickets, and if they do something very wrong, all they get is a little slap on the wrist then they go back to doing whatever they were doing, i have a couple of examples taken from sweden to back this claim up:

Carl Gustaf the 16th once lost control of his BMW and ran it off the road, thing was he was going almost dubble the allowed speed, which is a serious danger to society, and what happened?, they named the road after him. (Kungens Kurva @ Stockholm)

A famous swedish actor did a bunch of drugs and smacked his wife up something good, ending with her crawling out of the appartment leaving a blood trail after her, what happened to the psycho who took the drugs and beat her up?, he got fined and had to pay her money, never even considered jail in that case, i mean seriously, he took drugs and beat his wife, Why is that not eligeble for jail for celebrities!?

But if you dont count the fact that national laws dont apply to them and that they can do whatever they want cause they are famous...they are just like the rest of us.

Contempt is still not a emotion you should feel just because a person died.
