Paul Newman was a great actor with a lot of great movies to his name. Cool Hand Luke is one of my favorites.

Edit: I guess I should answer the question posed in the OP. No I don't feel sad when an actor dies. I didn't know him or her personally, so why should I? They wouldn't shed a tear for me or my loved ones. Of course that doesn't mean I'm happy if a celebrity dies, it's sad when anyone dies.

I personally am never affected when celebrities die. I don't know them personally thus have no emotional connection to them. I find it a bit strange that many people do cry and get upset when they do die though.

When people like Steve Irwin and Heath Ledger died I didn't care. Only people who have changed my life I actually cry or morn about. 2 people who stand out to me are John Lennon (Died 1980 Dec.8) and George Harrison (Died 2001 Nov.29) because there music is amazing and has changed my life. on Nov.29 and Dec.8 I dedicate a minute of silence to them, call me a crazy Beatles fanatic but... well I guess I am actually.

I can't say I'm overly upset about any celebrities no longer being with us.

I'll admit Steve Irwin was a bit of a shock, mostly because I thought my brother was lying about his death until I saw the story on the news. I mean, let's be honest, of all the ways that man could have died, stingray was pretty low down on the list of possibilities.
I actually met the man once as well, nice guy, had a much less annoying way of speaking when he wasn't on camera.

I do predict that I will probably be rather upset when David Attenborough dies.

I often feel bad for their respective families more so than I feel sad within myself. Some, like Carlin and Farley hit a little closer to home because, silly as it may be, you do sometimes feel a little attachment to somebody when you really respect or enjoy their work. To see them gone and know they will never entertain you or bring you their unique perspective again is a little sad.

There are very few deaths that don't make me feel upset. I definately sympathize with dead celebrities. However, what drives me nuts is how we have to deal with hearing about dead celebrities for months! The Anna Nicole Smith thing. She did, like, nothing with her life (except marry rich, act in porn, give birth to a couple of kids, and swim in money). However, when she died, if you tuned in to CNN over a two-week span, you would never hear the end of it. They need to just pay their respects the day it happens, and move on.

Celebrity deaths that really mattered to me:

Carlin - The man was a frigging comedy legend, and fought hard for reasonable censorship laws.
Candy - Funny. Canadian. Legend.
Farley - I liked to regard him as Candy Jr. It was equally sad when he passed.
Benoit - I'll probably be the only one who ever speaks up for this man ever again. The tragic events surrounding the deaths of him, his wife, and his youngest son have forever marred his otherwise phenominal wrestling career.

I too loved Benoit, but to be fair it's a pretty big (Johnny) marr on his career. he DID go crazy and kill them all

that said, by all reports most of the time outside the ring he was a gentleman

Exactly. Just because they're famous doesn't mean their death means more.

Being born in '90, I was too young to have been truly affected by a lot of celebrity deaths that happened in my lifetime. James Brown and Elliot Smith's deaths weren't a blow for me because I wasn't really into them, but I was sad for my sister who really was. The one that hit me hard was Steve Irwin's death. Not because he was famous, not because they wouldn't make any more crocodile hunter, but because he was a man who loved wildlife and wished to conserve its beauty. That was something I could appreciate.

EDIT: I don't know how I forgot this one. Gary Gygax. Not that I had any emotional connection to him, but D&D is a big part of my life. I wasn't really emotionally affected by his death but I certainly rolled a few d20s in his honor the day I found out.
