Maybe they should have called it "Dead Island und Krankenschwester" for that uniquely German appeal?

germany is always paranoid about nazi stuff in games. but in movies no problems.
violence has always been a huge problems for germany. they seriously think they stop kids from getting violent. and if something happens, they blame it on games instead finding out how the kid got the gun in the first place and why.

so yes, definitely not surprised to read this.

God I hate it when news about game bans in germany come up, the threads are always so full of bullshit...
Game "bans" really only mean the games cannot be advertised. You can still buy it if you want it, either from shops that sell it behind the counter by importing it from UK or Austria. The latter has the advantage of a german synchro.

So bans really only stop people who didn't know the game in the first place since they'll never know it exists. If you want the game you can get it without problems.

And as was said before: Importing it from UK / austria as well as having it is perfectly legal. Same for stuff with a swastika on it btw.
Packages from within the EU are custom free and don't get checked anyway.

And no, the WWI, WWII topics are not "avoided". Actually you never get people to shut up about them in school.
Whether or not people will laugh at a good jew joke depends on where you are. I'd certainly laugh...

Dear escapist:

Please, please check your facts better when reporting on German legal reactions to videogames.
This is not a ban, and it is not censorship. The game has not been seized or forbidden.
It just means that it can not be advertised publicly or sold to minors.
If I wanted this game, I could just walk into a shop, ask for it and show my ID.
That is it!

Publishers however sometimes choose not to publish it here, because they think the reduced revenue is not worth it. That is their decision, not that of the government.
That is the only reason I may not be able to buy it in a brick-and-mortar store. I can still buy it online, and not do anything illegal!

And also, dear thread:

I am thoroughly sick of my country being likened to the Nazi regime again and again because the international news media portrait it in such an ill-informed manner.

I like the escapist a lot and because of that I have come to expect better of you.

There seems to be a lot of ignorance in this thread. As far as if German's hope the Nazis win: You don't watch movie about native americans getting killed and then when they fight back say to yourself, "I sure do hope these idiotic, inbred useless backwoods illiterate hicks turn this around and win".
Well that is so far removed from recent memory, but with WWII it is very likely you know/knew a veteran. Maybe even someone close to you, like a grandfather.

PS. Aren't the natives the backwoods illterate ones in that scenario? I'm not supporting the way the were treated, just seems like an odd insult given the circumstances.
In this case, no, they are not. The Native American's were highly proficient in their own culture, language and writing. But the men directly responsible for what happened to them were illiterate, ill spoken and did not know much of anything about the English language. In comparison to cultural success, the "stupid fucking whiteman" were the backwoods illiterate ones.

I mean, the term "injuns" was derived from the word "indigents". Indigents were how the native cultures were described in official government papers. They couldn't read, so when the people who could called them indigents, their meager minds transformed it into "injuns".

The Germans are just upset that none of the player characters are Aryan, or even white for that matter... besides they can just take a drive to Austria for a German speaking copy.

In all seriousness I'm not surprised, the German government has its head so far up it's own ass right now that they are going to let the Euro die, destroying their own economy in the process, just to prove some point only they apparently see...

Still think Australia has them beat with their arbitrary attempts to block random porn, and their long history of banning games.

Gee Germany, between Call of Juarez: The Cartel and Dead Island, I would have accepted the ban if you had simply stated Techland was full of irredeemably racist pricks deserving of violence to all their orifices, but I'll accept this PS bullshit just this once if it undercuts their bottom line.

Seriously, between "bad guy" and "feminist whore" someone there needs sleep deprivation with a ghost chili eye drop treatment every time he's close to nodding off, never again to know the sweet release of sleep.

Still I bet the nazis win in some films.
Like.
Um.
Huh I guess they dont.
Technically in operation valkyrie germans won (not as much as won as the allies failed).

As for the article:
Ban legal game sales = legal gamers move to illegal downloads.
Why not use your head?

The Germans did have a bit of a home-grown neo-Nazi problem, which for obvious reasons they were more touchy about than most other countries that have the same (U.S. and surprisingly England and Sweden). I guess they felt that it was too difficult either from a manpower or legal limits standpoint to only censor Nazi related symbols if they were depicted in a positive or supportive manner as opposed to a negative manner, so they just banned all of them.

The article totally skipped over the WHY of banning Dead Island though. Wonder what the rationale is?

I might be wrong (I'm no lawyer)
But It's not banned, it's only indexed. You can buy it (as long as you can proof that you are 18 or older), you can play it (if you are more than 17 years old) and being in possession of it (as long as you aren't a minor) is no problem at all.
In other words:
