Besides, there are youtube videos of early Dead Island design way back in 2007. Long before anyone even knew about Rising.
Dead Rising was released in 2006. August 8th to be more precise.

OT: This just seems like an attempt to cash in on the recent zombie craze if you ask me.

Ha you expect originality from the games industry? LOL

And no it's not ripping off DR... Unless you can run around in a Mankini with a purple dinosaur on your head and judging by the trailer that's probably not going to be an option in Dead Island

[sub]Although Mankini DLC would still be pretty sweet![/sub]

Like formerly mentioned, the game hasn't released - not even a beta. I'd say you could start making comparisons once it does.

Other than that, I couldn't care if a game copied every thing from heaven and earth, so long as it'll be a blast; a blast I expect Dead Island to be.

I really really hate the word "rip off"... in my eyes it's the most overused word on the Internet...

Yes, it has some similarities with dead rising... but so has nearly every other "zombie-themed"-game out there I can think of. But is it an rip off? Hell no! "The Terminators" was a rip off, Dead Island isn't.

And I would be a lot happier when people would stop claiming, X is ripping off Y...

This is just my personal opinion, but it seems to me that Dead Island is ripping off the Dead Rising franchise.
A few examples that I've noticed are:
Use virtually anything as a weapon
Leveling up to get new skills for your character (Skill tree in Dead Island)
Combine weapons (I recently saw a picture of an electrified Machete, plus it said so in an interview)

Few points, but they are what make Dead Rising Dead Rising and not any other zombie game.
That's for the most part how game development works. They take concepts and mechanics that have worked in the past and build on or refine them. I'd have no problem with Dead Island if it was similar to Dead Rising as long as it improves on the core mechanics and brings new things to the table. It should also encourage Capcom to improve on Dead Rising since they now have competition. It could be the start of a whole new genre, Zombie Hoard Open World games or something. I look foward to this new genre if it ever materializes.

Well, that one's taking it's self seriously, apparently.
Also, guns are useless and... fuck, it's pretty much the same except for the tone and the position of the camera.

If nothing else, the onslaught of FPSs that we see have proved that ANY game has the chance to surprise us, despite the apparent similarities. I'm eager to see how the open-world-edness works out, because Dead Rising 2's system was pretty clunky.

Actually, that's a better answer. Dead Rising 2 acted like it was stuck in the last console generation with it's playability and loading times. I bet Dead Island can remedy that.
