You know there is this thing called 'gameplay', which is often a decent selling point for games. Soul Calibur is a really good 3D fighting game series. The 'theme' is weapon combat with a historical backdrop, though it has become increasingly fantasy, but still, its fun to play.Gordon_4 said:Yeah most of the big ones have a 'thing' they're remembered for.Zykon TheLich said:Boob sliders, marketing, having CG pics of the characters in revealing clothing, it's been the sexy fighter game from the start, it's hard to shake that kind of rep. Which is a shame, DoA was actually a decent fighter that felt different to all the rest, back when I played those sort of games.
DoA is its sexy characters, Mortal Kombat was built on blood and bone, Street Fighter upon its as yet unmatched colourful characters, Tekken sells itself on the (overly) dramatic story line of the Mishima/Kazama family.
There's lots of crossover, Tekken is not exactly short of good looking men and women, nor is Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. But it isn't what leaps to mind immediately when you think about them.
I have no idea what Soul Calibur's 'thing' was. The weapons perhaps?
Gameplay is incidental to this aspect of the conversation; this about themes, ideas or particular quirks that are fairly unique to the series. However, based one what you say I'll revise my earlier point and say Soul Calibur's hook was historical fantasy setting.Saelune said:You know there is this thing called 'gameplay', which is often a decent selling point for games. Soul Edge came first by a couple of years. But Samurai Showdown beats even that.Dreiko said:Guilty Gear already did the weapons thing before Soul Edge. I think SC's gameplay system with an emphasis on sidestepping and horizontal/vertical hitting moves was what made it noteworthy. It was more of a 3D fighter compared to games like Tekken and Virtua Fighter which while not 2D fighters were still struggling to find their own identity and implement the Y axis more fully into their systems. Also back in the days of the Dreamcast it was also known for having some of the best graphics for its time, it being back in a time where you saw an actual generational leaps in graphics.
Hmm, I must have mixed soul edge and the first soul calibur in my mind then, cause GG came out in 98.Saelune said:Soul Edge came first by a couple of years. Soul Edge though was just a good fighting game at the time. But the big draw was when Soul Calibur came out with the 8-Way Run, greatly expanding on the 3D combat of Soul Edge.
I know some people want to write off Soul Calibur as another 'look at the sexy lady' games, but it got popular before that, and certainly is less obsessed with its sexy ladies than DOA.
Plus Ivy, despite how sexualized her outfit, really is a great female character. Strong, capable and highly intelligent.

Interviewer: I'm sure you play other fighting games. Have you played Soul Calibur VI?
Shimbori: I have.
Interviewer: They went pretty far with the fanservice, and they seem to not have any problems...
Shimbori: The reason why they get away (with) it is one of the big mysteries of the world. Soul Calibur can do it and doesn't get a beating over it, but even when Dead or Alive doesn't do it, it still gets criticized.
If anyone can tell me why this happens, and how to fix it, please introduce them to me (laughs).
And it's actually a fairly good question; SC has been a fairly provocative series for almost as long as DoA has, including adding clothing destruction down to everyone fighting down in their skivvies WAY before DoA introduced even mild destruction, and has had fairly direct ads with Ivy compared to DoA's ads (except that one with the wall in Japan).
Yet other than some bashing on Ivy, SC generally gets away scot-free while DoA gets lambasted at every turn when it comes up. Even more so than explicitly sexual games like Senran Kagura, Sonicomi etc.
I mean, I can't understand why people would think of T&A when plahying the series. It's not liek they even marketed it as such....erttheking said:Because it, as a series, failed to leave any other type of impact on mainstream media.
I know gamers love to rant and rave about teh journalists like it's Revolutionary France and they're the trodden upon underclass being oppressed by the evil reactionaries, but unless you're a DoA fan, the words Dead or Alive bring T&A to mind. Because the series never made enough of an impact to make most people think of anything else.

For the DOA fans and others, who care what people thinks of the series. I swear, ever since the Last of Us released, gaming media has grown insecure and afraid "they won't be taken seriously" by others outside the media or those who dislike gaming to begin with. You're not going to change or please a majority of those people. so stop bothering. Games like DOA aren't holding the medium back. If that were the case, the film industry should've died years ago with its depiction of sex (non-porno) or violence.Something Amyss said:Paragon Fury said:Interview with Shimbori. DoA delberately cultivated its reputation during the sex sells peak period of advertising; its a bit rich for any of its devs to sit there with their thumb up their arse and ask why they get so much shade thrown at them for overdoing it on the sex appeal.CoCage said:For the DOA fans and others, who care what people thinks of the series. I know other people in the FGC like to look down on DOA (not as much compared to a decade ago), but most of their fighting games ain't much better. Street Fighter has always had fan-service since the animated movie and Super Street Fighter II with Cammy's first appearance. Don't even get me started with SNK's games. Hello Mai and Blue Mary! Games like Tekken increased the fan service starting 3, and Mortal Kombat...do I really need to any anything else? If do or do not enjoy the games that is fine and all, but act like you're better than everyone else.
You're not wrong, but it doesn't change the fact that most things get a free pass whether it be films, games, movies, or TV shows that involve fanservice or sex. Those Street Fighter V had some criticisms when it came to Laura or R.Mika (even though she has always been fanservice heavy).Gordon_4 said:DoA delberately cultivated its reputation during the sex sells peak period of advertising; its a bit rich for any of its devs to sit there with their thumb up their arse and ask why they get so much shade thrown at them for overdoing it on the sex appeal.CoCage said:For the DOA fans and others, who care what people thinks of the series. Obviously there's going to be a back and forth if we keep continuing. I repeat once again: why single out just DOA though? Yes it highly marketed the fanservice, but Soul Calibur is just as guilty to some degree with its later games (IV so much). The same thing goes for Capcom, Konami (Rumble Roses), SNK, Netherrealm, etc. People like to pick at the DOA volleyball games, but they're just spin offs, albiet they are canon (to the point where those pictures posted earlier seems like an unfair comparison; where is photo for the entire cast for DOA 4 or 5?). I don't care for the spin-offs, so I don't even bother with them. besides, doa 6 has pulled back on thefanservice. Sure, it's still there , but it's not as gracious in the past games. Koei Tecmo can remove all the fanservice in the world and somebody would still ***** about it. At this point, take it or leave it.Something Amyss said:Someone made this thread, so they care.CoCage said:For the DOA fans and others, who care what people thinks of the series.
That has nothing to do with what you quoted, however. I think it's a little silly to complain about media bias in gaming "journalism" when the same person posts "interviews" that lob softballs and clearly push an agenda. An agenda TC is okay with, specifically.
Street Fighter 2's original releases still had panty shots from Chun Lee.Street Fighter has always had fan-service since the animated movie and Super Street Fighter II with Cammy's first appearance.
But this has already been addressed earlier in the thread by a screenshot comparing another series to DOA. It's disingenuous to pretend "has some fanservice" is the same as "is nothing but fanservice and explicitly marketed as such."
It's almost like the game built around fanservice is treated...like it's built around fanservice.
You're asking why a granola bar with chocolate in it isn't treated the same as a chocolate bar, and worse, this topic has been addressed multiple times in the same topic.
