It isn't immediately obvious, but if you haven't saved you can save your status and then restart from the beginning with all your experience, so it's not like everything is wasted.

As for what you're missing, the zombies themselves aren't that hard, but if you try taking the most daring and impressive pictures it creates its own challenge. Also, there's simply the fact that as you play stuff happens around you, it really feels like a living world rather than one that tries to simulate it assuming you'll follow the steps the devs set out for you.

Dead rising was good not great but good for its time this was an 360 launch title and this was capcom getting there feet wet and for that i would give DR an 8 but yeah...auto save would be nice i mean what is this a gameboy color game?

Yes, Im afraid Dead Rising went the way of the French Revolution, it had a good idea driving it but it failed in the executions

The survivors annoyed me more than anything..

There was this one really strange occurrence however when I saved a group of girls, (from a crazy lesbian mall security guard) where after while one girl kept going around and shoving the other survivors. If I forced her in a room by herself she would immediately sit down and cry herself to sleep.

...Yeah, that was weird. And the guy with the neck wound who would twitch...I was expecting to come back and find he ate everyone after awhile. (The other's would point and scream at him)

...And the fat guy who would threaten to eat people if I didn't get him food...

Well, you get what I'm trying to say.

Count me among those who didn't "get" it. I'm even fairly high on the concept, but the execution felt stale and, well, boring.

Hey, I feel your pain too.
The game had so much potential, but was let down by an awful save system, ballistic difficulty, friendly AI that were dumber than the zombies, frustrating boss battles, and on top of that, the game was basically one long timed mission!
I've bitched about it (maturely) a number of times on these forums, and one user agreed with me and summed the game up perfectly with one sentence: "Capcom made a great sandbox with Dead Rising, but every-time you wanted to play in it, Capcom would just kick sand in your face."
