ALL PC games requiring online activation are like this. IT'S TO HELP PREVENT PIRACY. Sure you may not like it, but that would be why you would buy a console (unless Sony does that serial key thing, then just 360). EA (and I'm pretty sure all other companies) will not turn on the authentication servers UNTIL IT IS LAUNCH DAY. It is just barely launch day here, and I'm sure you can do it now, but this is nothing new, you just haven't encountered it yet.
This does not help prevent piracy because pirated copies of the game wont start circulating for another few days. Sure it may help prevent leaks, but ne1 who managed to get a leaked copy of the game probably has the know how to circumvent something like this.

This does nothing to combat piracy what so ever. Serial keys, internet connection check ins sure, but a zero time counter for when the game will run? nahuh.

Given the OPs question is this a load of DRM or what? and the fact the game has been playable and cracked since the 22nd via non legit means.. I would call that a piracy prevention as well as preventing leaks fail.

Why not? I would have sympathy for you, if you thought you could go to a store, buy a game and then play it on launch night.

This is about the fact that I made plans to play this at this time. If dead space 2 didnt come out in the US for another few days and it came out in the UK before us, great. I would be sleeping right now, and you would be the one posting about the problem.

Also I would have been fine if there was some side note in the adds, "Wont be playable until X time GMT" or something.

Just checked, there's already copies going around, and have been circulating for over 2 hours.

It doesn't. I mentioned it on the whole prevention/stopping of piracy thread some time ago. Anything can be cracked. I crack my own, bought games. It takes me something around 5 to 10 minutes. That is, messing with the code, making a new exe or .dll and then play. It's a stupid, intrusive prevention that helps nothing and if EA would start actually making a good protection for their games instead of being short of coming into our homes and stare at our screen, things might work better.

On a related note, a friend got the game yesterday as well, cracked it and played it.

Ug. That sucks man. Don't worry It'll work eventually, its just fuck tards in EA trying to stop something its got no power over. Try not to let it ruin the game for you when it does play :)

When I stand in line to get a game they don't open the doors until it's midnight. Even though it's been midnight in other provinces for hours.

No different. This isn't DRM, this is the publisher deciding that X is the zero hour timezone, and everything adheres to that.
Typical. This man says how it is, and everyone ignores him. Read that one more time please.

Never had such an urge to play a new game that this would annoy me much. Always something else to do if plans don't work out.

Well, that sucks, but to be honest I don't really find it that big of a deal. I don't know, there's been a couple things going on in my life lately that have made me realize that the little things aren't something you should stress over. Sure, it's annoying and silly, but at least you've got your health. And now I suddenly sound like my grandfather.

This seems fitting:

Do you really need to play it right now? Can't you like, go do something else? It isn't the end of the world if you can't play Dead Space 2 for 1-24 hours.
You're right, he doesn't deserve the right to use something he's paid for until an abritrary time set by someone else. How ridiculous.
You dont buy the game u buy a licence to use the software(play the game). or thats how i understand it any way.

OT: i personaly dont see anything wrong with having to wait a couple hours to play a game.

Whats occuring right now is the game is installing and launching, but EA's install authenticator (a peice of DRM layered ONTOP of steam) is not accepting CD Key's.

Wait another 5 hours (11 am est, when other July 25th games become accessable) then get worried.

I've already submitted support tickets to EA and Steam.

Anyone defending this as "the way it is" or stating "it's not a big deal" needs to refer to this post.

Once again, the customer who's doing things the entirely 'legitimate' way gets a worse experience.

Something is seriously, seriously wrong here.
