Hello everyone,
My very first thread (long time poster) here on the Escapist and hopefully it hasn't been done already (I didn't find it on a site search, so here we go!).
I just picked up this Xbox 360 survival horror game today (it's a budget title, $20) and it's an absolute scream. The game was announced a couple years ago (http://www.destructoid.com/rainy-woods-ps3-xbox-360-is-the-rainiest-and-woodiest-survival-horror-game-yet-44671.phtml), and around the time the first trailer was released (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/tgs-07-rainy-woods/25298) a lot of people commented that the game obviously was inspired by David Lynch's surreal soap opera, Twin Peaks. It resembled the show so much that the developers delayed the title in order to make the necessary changes that would distance itself from Lynch's show (http://www.ps3attitude.com/2008/07/rainy-woods-delayed-until-2009-at-least.html).
One name change later, Marvelous Entertainment published and shipped the title earlier in the week. After spending a good hour with it, the nods and references to Twin Peaks are still heavily apparent. Agent York is clearly modeled after Agent Cooper who often speaks to an invisible entity named "Zach" (similar to Cooper's "Diane") as he goes about his day. York is also an avid coffee fan who has the ability to read fortunes within the cream swirls. Agent York has been called into the town of Greenvale (no longer named "Rainy Woods") to investigate the murder of a young woman - an act that has shocked everyone.
So far, the game is a mix of adventure game-esque exploration combined with Resident Evil 4/5 style combat (3rd person, over the shoulder camera, can't move when aiming and firing a gun, etc). I plan on doing a review after I spend a significant amount of time with the title, but I just wanted to share this game's existence with you all. It's clearly going to be one of those games no one ever plays (like Rule of Rose), but as a fan of weird games like this, it will be hard to not get some enjoyment out of this one.
