Hey there escapists!
I was wondering if any of you could tell me Deadpools/Wade Wilsons origin story in a nutshell.
The reason why I'm asking this is because i recently watched X-Men: Origins - Wolverine, mostly beacause I knew it features Deadpool/Wade Wilson.
Now I dont know much about any of Marvels (or DCs for that matter) Characters backstories. This is mainly due to the fact that I live in Germany and Comic books arent as popular here as they are elsewhere. From what i knew before watching the movie, Deadpool is a gunslinging, trashtalking, psychotic manniac with a healingfactor. In the movie, there is either the bigmouth Wade Wilson
or Weapon XI aka Deadpool witch has been spliced together from other mutants DNA in the body of Wilson. Also they stiched his mouth shut, witch cancels yout the whole talking thing he has going on, as far as i know ('Merc with a Mouth')

So I ask all those of you who have bigger knowledge then me in this respect: Where does Deadpool originate from and what do you think of his portrayal in the movie mentioned above?

Just like you I am in no way a comic book enthusiast, mainly because there are no marvel comicbooks here.
Sort of like Wolverine, only he was a criminal that was forced to be tested and survived.

Oh and I kind of liked him in the movie until he was.... mutated or something. But I realize it's nothing compared to the Deadpool comic nerds wanted.

He got his name because the other inmates/patients made a betting pool on when he would die in some institute. I think.

Wikipedia is your friend. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadpool]

Or if you don't want to skim through that to find your answer, basically he was a regular dude given an artificially induced healing factor by the Weapon X project - this had the side effect of also rapidly speeding up the development of the cancerous tumors he was afflicted with at the time of that experiment, leading to his disfigured appearance (why he wears that mask in the comics) and messing with his brain, which is why he's essentially psychotic and unpredictable (there's a mass of tumors constantly killing/regenerating his brain tissue).

Wade Wilson was dying from cancer when the Weapon X program offered him a chance for a cure. Undergoing procedures which attempted to recreate the healing factor of Weapon X (aka Wolverine), Wilson's cancer went into overdrive, scarring him externally and neurologically. Wilson was left in a near-catatonic state; he was deemed a failure and was sent to a facility where rejects of the Weapon Plus program were locked away. While there, he became the subject of betting among the other inmates in what was known as the dead pool. In this game, the inmates gambled on whom the warden would kill next; Wilson had been chosen as a test subject for the warden's various experiments and was given high odds for death. Wilson survived, however; eventually the healing factor manifested itself and, though still scarred and insane, he mustered enough lucidity to escape. Wilson thereafter used his abilities to become a renowned - if unstable - mercenary, taking the name of Deadpool to reflect the odds that he beat.

The character's back-story has been presented as vague and subject to change, and within the narrative he is unable to remember his personal history due to his mental condition. Whether or not his name was even Wade Wilson is subject to speculation since one of his nemeses, T-Ray, claims in Deadpool #23 that he is the real Wade Wilson and that Deadpool is a vicious murderer who stole his identity.[40] There have been other dubious stories about his history - at one point the supervillain Loki claimed to be his father.[citation needed] Frequently, revelations are later retconned or ignored altogether, and in one issue, Deadpool himself joked that whether he is actually Wade Wilson depends on who happens to be writing the comics at the time.[citation needed]

Deadpool is also one of the only characters to claim that they know they are in a comic book multiple times. I believe he even went as far as to drive another character insane by telling them they were just a comic book character. The only other Marvel character to express this knowledge was Loki.

That isn't Deadpool.

Basically deadpool never was Wade Wilson, he is crazy and saw that name and guessed that was his.

He's the best character in Marvel's roster. That is all you need to know.

I'd advise you to get the Deadpool Classic TPB's. There are only three so far, and they are a collection of Deadpool's most important story arcs.

Exactly, hence why he is a little to spontaneous. The funny part was that Ryan Reynolds was quite possibly the best casting for Deadpool, then they cealed his mouth shut, gave him teleportation powers, eye-lasers and those swords in his arms. Yeaaaahh...noo.... I felt kind of bad when the built him for that. It really was my only complaint, mostly because I figured the story itself was going to be just silly. It was better than I hoped, though seeing a tiny wolverine do the wolverine scream kept me laughing for like 20 mins.

And Squirrel Girl, who has canonnically defeated half the marvel villains, including Dr.Doom
