So wait, you're sad because an event has caused you to be sad? Consider yourself lucky. That suggests you have a base line attitude of not being totally miserable.

For someone like me, you can get thrown into a black depression for no fucking reason whatsoever and the only cure is to wait for it to go away.

Don't know if it works for everybody, but when I'm sad, I listen to this song:

I defy anybody to not smile while it plays.

Sacrifice a goat to the gods, they cause sadness and if you do it they will make you happy.

Sometimes an emotional outlet can help. Some people joke that playing percussion is cathartic because you're physically hitting something, but it's the ability to channel emotion into a performance that really helps.

Do what I did: sit in your dorm room doing nothing but playing video games, and then get suspended from your university.

No, don't do that. For the love of god, when shit hits the fan, put a hold on your education and, if possible and financially feasible, your job, or else you could end up giving up midway through the semester.

The only effective way for me to deal with sadness is to give it some time. That said, after what happened to me, I can think of only a handful of things that would cause my sadness to be more than a blip on my emotion-radar.

Few things compare to what happened then, which has made it a lot easier to get over most new threats that come my way.
This is my main problem. I have a load of work that I need to finish by the end of the week, & I know there's no way I'll get it all done...

Personally, I often vent my sadness to myself. I keep talking to myself until my subconscious gives me a mental slap in the face and I find a solution

Although I'm not sure if it's healthy, I kinda just sit in it and remember the sadness for a bit. I prefer to think about it for awhile and be sad, and get all of the dark feelings out of the way, then move on and deal with the little moments when I remember the problem, until it doesn't happen often enough to bother me, or until it's just not worth being unhappy about.

Seems to work for when I'm feeling sad. I can basically do anything I usually do, even with a sad thought or feeling at the front of my mind, so it's not like I'm hindered or anything. Hell, sometimes I even look for things to be sad about. That, though... is something I don't really understand myself.

Jesus, way to make the entire thread (or maybe just me?), curious XD

OT: But yes, maybe don't do anything that'll mess up your life further. Just make whatever you do a personal thing, and don't let it affect everything else too much, or there may be other problems to deal with

My personal preferences for when life shits in your sandwich:

1) Just try to suck it up. That may sound a little harsh but you'd be surprised the number of times in life I've gotten by in life by just getting my head down and ploughing on with stuff. Pig-headed determination can weather most shitstorms.

2) Escapism. For me that's a glass or two of Scotch, but each to their own. Drowning your sorrows may not solve them, but it does make them disappear for a while.

3) Retreat back into the company of loved ones. When dealing with problems on your own doesn't work fall back on those that love you. There are some that would say this should be option 1, but since my friends know that I always try and sort shit out myself first they know that when I ask for their help I really need their help - and they respond appropriately.

But above all deal with your problems in a way that seems best to you. Everyone deals with crap differently, and following strangers' advice to the letter is only likely to make you feel worse in the long run.

All the best in dealing with your troubles OP.

I think about what's making me sad and why it's doing so, until it doesn't make me sad anymore.

Spend some time alone to come up with a plan, figure out what you need to do to fix your problem, if it isn't fixable (like a death or something) than reminisce and figure out what you want to do next, as long as it involves getting up and continuing with things. Next I'd recommend talking to somebody about, just work things out. Go for a walk, do some sort of physical exercise, even if it's not your thing, just getting outside and walking in some woods for an hour is a great time to think or just shut your brain off and observe the natural world. Lastly go out with some friends and drink, personally this can be great, just relax and loosen up, you may even forget your problems for a few short hours. Above all though, just keep going, time will help, even if it won't ever completely fix all problems.

When I'm sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead.

True story.

Joking aside, the best thing to do when your sad, is to do something that makes you happy, or at least something that takes your mind off of things.

Whatever happens, happens.
When I'm sad, I stop being...

FINE. New strategy.

When I'm sad... I can always count this to cheer me right the hell up.

They are just sooo damn happy together.

Wallowing to some Radiohead for a week (or however long you feel you need), and then doing something that takes your mind off of whatever is bumming you out. Worked for me back in high school, anyway.
I haven't been all that upset about anything lately, and I'm not saying that to rub it in, but I don't know what I would end up doing these days. Probably zoning out for a few hours at a time, or trying to lose myself in either laughable amounts of game time, or a good fantasy novel. If you're the type to lose yourself in a book try Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson. I wouldn't say it changed my life, but it certainly consumed a fairly large portion of it. Enough for you to have forgotten why you were sad at least.
