If I knew the NSA was monitoring my PC, I would masturbate to the weirdest shit imaginable, all the while maintaining direct eye contact with my webcam.

The thing is, even if your own security agency says it doesn't do the same sort of monitoring, there is a significant possibility it does and is lying, and an even larger one that it gets information from the NSA anyway, who are monitoring your country despite not being allowed to.

I'd like to think any NSA workers monitoring my usage have long since died of PTSD or boredom. But then again, they've probably got a department of veterans who have seen all manner of things and are desensitised to it.

Or actually, even funnier would be if there were an NSA Armored Core fan who monitors my traffic to keep up with patch notes and AC discussions.

... I love how hardly anyone in the thread actually read the articles closely enough to realize that the NSA isn't monitoring all porn, but rather the porn use of actual suspected terrorists - and for a remarkably logical reason. Porn is forbidden by Islam.

So if the Islamic extremists who are recruiting suicide bombers are watching porn, then they are breaking a very serious Islamic law - and thus are massive hypocrites.

This is actually a fairly brilliant move on the part of the NSA. I salute them.

I'm curious to know what this actually achieves though. Can they use it against them? Will it then discredit them and consequently result in their banishment or..?

Blackmail material?

"hey, stop publicly supporting terrorists attacks or your porn habits will get leaked. Don't be surprised if your extremist buddies want to decapitate you next."

Youre kidding me right?? The Jihad is just a pretext to kill people and feel rewarded for it... the Islam demands people to do a lot of good things (in exchange of virgins provided by an omnipotent dude in the sky...) but WHO CARES???!! Its also the religion that says "Live well is the best vengeance".... But who cares??¡¡
Those people just like to kill for one of the stupidest, and most common, reasons: God, and it doesnt matter how good their god is, they will kill for it because they want to feel superior....
Their religion doesnt even matter into this, kill people because they have something different, specially religion is basic human behavior....
I'm not sure what your issue here is.

What the NSA is doing might help discredit some of the ringleaders who organize this crap by showing their followers that they are hypocrites and are breaking Islamic law. If the suicide bombers believe that strongly in Islam, then showing them that the people trying to convince them to kill themselves are not true believers (at least in their eyes) it might prevent some of the bombings.

I'm not saying that all Islamic people are terrorists (they aren't). I'm simply saying that those who are have often been misled by charismatic leaders who convince them to strike at the "corruption" of the west. By showing the young kids doing this that their leaders are just as corrupt as anyone else, it very well might lead to fewer bombings.

You may not believe in their religion, but they certainly do.

And if I have misunderstood your issue... then please explain it rather than ranting incoherently.

I'm not sure about that, but it might make some of the young people joining up due to the words of charismatic leaders to question those leaders if they learn that they are as "corrupt" as the west they hate.

Think of it this way. A powerful figure tells you to kill yourself. You would probably be less likely to do so if there was evidence that said powerful figure was disobeying the same laws that he's asking you to uphold with your suicide.

So yeah, go NSA.

Honestly, they're monitoring so much of the internet communications and traffic that go on that if you just did this every so often someone's bound to see it eventually and be freaked the fuck out. Even more so if everyone does this every now and then.
I think people are assuming that their internet activity is much more interesting than it actually is. They likely aren't actually watching you unless: You own the anarchist's cookbook and are building explosives in your basement, you go to potentially terrorist (to them, could be anything. Maybe even boyscouts) meetings, you're some influential public figure and they want to keep tabs on you, You use bing because that is the worst offence of all.

They do not care if you: Order dominoes and not Pizza Hut, Watch tentacle porn, talk to your friend on skype (unless his name is mohammad)

If you're not doing anything that can remotely, veeeery remotely be considered a national threat (they take a lot of liberties) then they probably don't give a shit about you.

Firstly, yes I understand this is a joke. really.
the following is also hardly serious, either.[sub]1*[/sub]

if I recall my movies right ( heh ) it is a federal crime to impersonate the nsa, or any federal agency/member so they might well cruise on over in their replica enterprise-d and taze the shit out of you for giggles, so I hope you're into your star-trek themed electro!

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's take on the situation:[link]https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/11/nsa-tracking-online-porn-viewing-discredit-radicalizersp[/link]

There's a nasty history of our spies using this kind of information against citizens of the United States who haven't actually committed any crimes. The potential for it being used even to coerce our elected officials is genuinely worrying. I may not love all our elected officials, but at least they're elected, unlike the NSA spook who might decide that arms need to be twisted to keep people in line.

Unfortunately, as a non-US citizen I'm can't be held accountable to federal law.

Besides, I'm not impersonating an officer of the NSA, I'm impersonating the NSA itself. It's like I'm walking up to your door and claiming, not to be a police officer, but rather the New York Police Department.

I've also been known to claim that I'm the CN Tower, an animate pile of swe-at shirts, several famous landmarks (sometimes more than one at the same time. I once claimed to be both the Brandenburg Gate and the Arc-de-truimph, which was pretty easy given that a lot of people can't tell them apart), and in my greatest feat to date, the entire Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

(though, now that I think about it, impersonating an officer of a foreign agency may be against the Geneva Convention... welp, in for a penny in for a pound *goes off to commit war crimes*)

Especially then. The more you try to hide, the more interesting you become...
Then, I must one the most interesting wizards watching porn to them... (I kinda like that a little...)

OT: Terrorist must watch the weirdest of porn before they even make their pending strike... You know those different positions are just perfect cover ups for bombs, guns, bomb-guns, and gun-bombs... The NSA must keep all three of their legs at the ready at any given moment...

Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to celebrate my birthday today by given the NSA some material to prove that I'm not a wizard type of a terrorist...

ok, fair enough damn international escapists! ( i'm among them too lol ) and yes they do tend to make up laws as they see fit, but i reckon you're ok they have too much spying to actually get any war crimes courts open if not just fly to Berlin and go shack up with snowden and hatch manic schemes

Your hopes are sadly contradicted by the above links, showing that they are also in fact targetting people solely for being "radicalizers".

If you would be an actual terrorist, they wouldn't watch your porn habits, they would bomb you. This is used as a piece in ideological warfare, not actual warfare.
But, but, but...if people didn't have anything to hide, they wouldn't be afraid of a shadowy unaccountable government agency secretly watching them.
Everyone has something to hide. Privacy is vital to free society.

If, if the NSA were to somehow start revealing the porn habits of terrorists, that would probably be about as effective as the US carpet-bombing North Korea with pamphlets that said "SPOILERS: Kim isn't actually divine. kthxbai".

I mean, seriously, do you think before you type, or do you just make everything up as you go?

As far as I'm aware they don't actually see the content you do in realtime, its a sort of compilation of where and what you frequent most. Besides do you realize the absolute magnitude of manpower it would take to watch in realtime what everyone else on the internet is watching? Think a moment about it, one person watching one other person on the internet... There's not enough people on the planet to do that.
So its more a collection of frequent data usage stats, still its not cool. And people still defend the current administration... ugh.
