A convicted Utah man sentenced to death has opted to be executed by firing squad. Since 1976, when the Supreme court overturned the death penalty ban, Utah is the only state to have used the old timey method. Oklahoma allows for firing squad but has not used method in 'modern time'.

Although I oppose the death penalty, and this guy is a murderer, I can't help but be impressed by the cajones of this guy to stand in front of a firing squad and go out like a badass (badass might not be best word but its the best I got right now.)

So, for discussion: what do you think of a modern state using such a method of execution? How would you wanna go out?

I dunno about firing squad. Lethal injection is good enough for me. I'm not going to get into details on my thoughts on the death penalty though. Personally, I want to go out with a bang. Something awesome. That, or peacefully with my family by my side.

It's probably better than lethal injection, which can take hours to die. Sometimes the painkillers wear off before the toxins kill you.

Wrong by force

Right if the guy WANTS to be executed (for whatever reason). I feel it is fitting to quote Marshal Ney, one of Napoleon's closest Generals, who was executed after Napoleon was deposed. He was called "Ney, Bravest of the Brave" for a reason

He was allowed to give the order to fire and refused to wear a blindfold

Soldiers, when I give the command to fire, fire straight at my heart. Wait for the order. It will be my last to you. I protest against my condemnation. I have fought a hundred battles for France, and not one against her ... Soldiers, Fire!"

It's how I'd like to go if I was sentanced to death. Of the five legal methods of execution in the US:

Hanging: Neck snaps, dead
Gas Chamber: Suffocation, dead
Lethal Injection: Kind of unclear on the specifics, but I think it stops the major organs, dead.
Electric Chair: BZZZZZZT! Dead
Firing Squad: The only manly way among these. It takes stones to look at five guys with guns and yell "HIT ME MOTHERF***ERS!"

Its a killing method like any other. Ok the gas and now the lethal injection are less painful but if its his call, I cant really disagree.

Mmm I rather never kill anyone, but even so dead penalty is banned from all europe. Even so I rather have the lethal injection.

Ah. The death penalty. My favorite, and most encouraged punishment for crime. I support it, even in some non-murder cases. Like repeat offenders of certain crimes.

I'd like death by snu snu!

To think a 'modern state' still uses any form of execution... *tsktsk*

Anyhoo, there's probably a science project around that needs human test subjects. If I had to be executed, at least I'd be doing something useful.

What's so immoral about firing squad? It's an instant death with pretty much zero pain. I'd rather take that than lethal injection honestly.

That is a pretty badass way to go out. He's a brave som'*****! They should use this method more often I think. No doubt it's damn effective and cheap as dirt.

WARNING: I will edit in a link to cracked in 1 minute. You have been warned.

EDIT: Too late.

As long as I say something like one of these: http://www.cracked.com/article_16354_11-most-badass-last-words-ever-uttered.html I'll be good.

I used to carpool with one of the guys that was on the firing squad for the last guy: John Albert Taylor.

Whether you believe in capital punishment or not, the firing squad is a cheap, efficient, and fast way to die. Most reports also seem to indicate it's not as psychologically bad for the executioners and anyone watching as other methods. I'm kind of surprised Utah is the only state using it, to be honest.

Ahah futurama is awesome!

Anyways, I think firing squad is a relatively quick death, meaning the pain won't last for long.

To be honest, with firing squad it's less likely to go wrong. I mean it isn't common, but if they miss a vein, or the anaesthetics could wear off, leaving you in agony for maybe hours.

You know what: I will try and avoid doing anything that would cause me to be executed. That's probably the best plan...

Better than a murderer living life on our dime in a already crowded/bloated legal system.
You're right, let's just kill them, that'll teach them a lesson they won't soon forget. Less trouble for us too.

Death by firing squad has got to be a bit less painful than say, death by frying pan, so it's got that going for it.
