Death of the 4 player co-op

Hell, some games dont even bother with 2 player co-op and 2 player split screen competitive.
Online gaming is fine but sometimes I want to have some mates around and pwn them all at games that they have never played.

Dev's need to look back at some of the more successful games of the last decade and realise that playing against people on the same console, split-screen, is an attractive feature.

What get's me is, the PS3 can connect to 4 controllers, yet hardly any game takes advantage of it.

Bit presumptious considering there's already 2 people on this thread that LIKE split screen.

Actually you can have up to 7 player

You truly do learn something new everyday
How do you get 7 players?
Obviously with only 3 controllers and only 3 gaming friends I will never need to use a 7 player function, its still nice to know.

What about Rock Band and the new Guitar Hero? Those games are pretty big on 4-player Co-op.

yeah they were OK, but its hard for everyone to find something they like, and usually no one wants to sing, or everyone does. and musical tastes vary, just not quite the same adventure I'm looking for with 3 buddies.

I like having the OPTION, my television sucks personally but my friends is a really nice big screen plasma so last week L4D would have been awesome, especially since we were pretty drunk and amused, but no, stupid no 4 person split screen. Alas, I was bummed.

The answer is obvious: Currend graphics are a LOT better than a few years ago. To enjoy those graphics you need a whole screen full of details.
When games looked terrible, had no rendering and minimum details there was not much to loose shrinking the screen down into one fourth of a Tv. Sure games were fun than but only few have timeless graphics that people nowadays can stand without irritation.

Games with 4 player options were the norm in the last gen of consoles, so why the hell should things be different now.
I ask people this, if Timesplitters came out with online multiplayer but NO 4 player splitscreen, would it still be a Timesplitters game?

I'm not even asking for that much strain on graphics, Really what I'm asking for is another champions of norrath for current gen. My bigger question then is if its so hard to do, then why have 4 controller capiablities?

The problem with single console offline co-op, is that it takes processing power.
Processing power that developers think should be spent trying to maximize graphics.

Yeah but i would much rather be having fun with 3 friends then need superior graphics. Just doing it together as a team is better than any next gen bloom and muddy Grey they can throw at me.

I was agreeing with the original post. 2(and 4) player single console offline co-op is awesome and less time should be spent trying to maximize bloom/graphics.

This is the exact thing i am talking about. If you have more than 1 friend over, you pretty much cant play anything coop, without someone being left out. And the thing about co-op is that taking turns is hard cuz deaths are usually less frequent.

Whenever there is a thread on split-screen created anywhere on the Internet you get people saying: "spilt-skreeeen iz teh sux!!!11 u mus squint!!!!".

Morons, it never seems to occur to them that no game has ever in the history of video gaming (that I can name) actually required split-screen and therefore incorporating this feature into any game has absolutely no affect on them whatsoever should they choose not to use it and furthermore that this feature is both appealing and useful to many people.

Exactly, if you want to be a loner, so you can hog your huge screen tv, thats fine no one forces you to split your screen. Personally i like being able to check up on where my mates are, how they are doing, and being able to relay info to them in real time. Its true Co-op if you ask me, even online just feels like you are able to talk about what just happened, or come up with a "plan" at best.

I wholeheartedly agree with the lack of 4 player co-op games. I prefer to play with friends as opposed to random people. However Little Big Planet was 4 player Co-op.

Other than that, I don't really see Gears of War working as well with 4 people, that could be the reason.
