If you use Skype, Trillian is another excellent option--I switched to it about a year ago when I finally realized that Digsby had been abandoned by its devs.
I used Trillian for years and always loved it... but lately I find it a bit annoying that they discovered they could every half or full hour put an ad for their Pro version right into the damn chat windows.
Of course I'd still recommend Trillian but I think it's just fair to warm of that beforehand.
To be perfectly honest, they're really not bad at all. Small, minimal, and as non-intrusive as an in-chat ad can possibly be. I barely even notice them. :p
Yes, yes they are. But even the best ad between chat lines is still a damn ad between chat lines which as a concept should be punishable by banishment into the deep realms of GeoCity.
Trillian just has so many good sides I can let that thing slide.

I use Miranda, it's really light and has tons of options for customization. Also it lets aggregate all your messaging accounts from different sources into one piece of software.

Just use Facebook. Instant messengers have become unnecessary, unless they're tied to other uses like Steam or Xfire.
This says everything about you that needs to be known.
What does it say about me?
I'm really curious, too. From what I understand, you use Facebook (as most people out there) and you use Steam (as most people here). So you are like most people, I guess. Unless there is something more I'm missing?
