Excluding the obvious, 1st party titles like Mario, Zelda and Metroid, I recommend Klonoa, Excitebots: Trick Racing, and Okami (assuming you don't have the PS2 version). There's not much 3rd party games that are recommendable at the moment, but where getting a strong lineup of 3rd party games later this year, like Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Red Steel 2, and A Boy and His Blob.

What kind of games are you looking for anyway? There is plenty of good stuff too find. Of course you've got the obvious first-party titles like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. But there are also plenty of good games from third parties: e.g. No More Heroes, Sam & Max, Okami, World of Goo etc.

For a family? Well, everyone else had some pretty good suggestions, too, but I really recommend Wii Sports Resort. That and the original are the first things my father and I have played together since the Gold Box CRPGs.

Raving Rabbids. I kind of prefer the first one that was released to the Wii, but any of them are funny.

Trauma Center 1&2 (Grey's Anatomy, except it works as a game), Mad World (gets tiresome), Okami (epic), Zelda TP: (Epic), Brawl (obvlous), No More Heroes (epic and amusing), Mario Galaxy (amazing platforming), Animal Crossing (sweet) and Little King's Story (Cute, epic and just about deep enough to amuse most people)

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Strategy)
Super Smash Brothers Brawl (Fighting)
Zelda: Twilight Princess (RPG, I guess?)
Mario Galaxy(Platformer)
Madworld(Hack and slash, I think, I haven't played it.)

A few gamecube games I'd get also (if you want to, they are good, and probably cheap):
Tales of Symphonia (JRPG)
Super Mario Sunshine (Platformer)
Freedom Fighters (Third Person Shooter)
And if you like sports games, I'd recommend NBA or NFL Street.

For multi-player fun I'd recommend (in order of greatness):

Super Smash Brothers: Brawl
Mario Kart Wii
Wii Sports
Warioware Smooth Moves

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is the greatest game ever made.
No More Heroes is fun.
Battalion wars 2 is a unique and fun game.
Mario Galaxy, Brawl and Zelda are all good choices.
De Blob is a great 3d platformer.
Wario Land: Shake it is fun if somewhat easy.
Madworld is fun for a while.
Fire emblem is good old strategy fun.
Mario Kart is a fun racing game.
The conduit is fun, it just lacks local multiplayer.

Erm...are you guys sure you know what toy you are talking about. IMO there are no good games for the wii. The ones not ment for kids or elderly are average. Zelda has lost it's magic, mario in space was just plain stupid and after that I unplugged it and it hasn't been on since.

For the record I have played each one of the above games.
You do realize that he got a Wii for the purpose of family, right? I don't see a better reason to get a Wii.

Back on topic, I would recommend something, but everything I've played that I was going to say has already been said. If you've already got Fire Emblem, good luck! You will need it to keep your best units alive.

It's been said earlier, but out of the 3 versions I've played, I think the Wii version of RE4 is the superior version, due to better controls.

Edit: And I second Trauma Center: Second Opinion. And the Metal Slug Anthology is a good bet. Metal Slug rules...
