a gang?!? strikes to the adams apple and strikes to a certain "special" spot at the side of the neck, i've been in karate most of my life andi'm pretty sure even if everything went perfectly, and i was even able to tough out broken bones and keep fighting (if i knew my life was in danger mabe a 5% chance) i'd only be able to take 4-5, only because if i get the first strikes and they hit the target (i'd have to surprise them) i'd be able to take down 4 (theoretically) before they could do anything, of course if one thing went wrong and i missed, i'd be completely defensless and get my face ground into the side of the road). if your talking more than 4-5 people you could have a switchblade and a suit of armor you'd still lose.

OP, doesn't matter how much karate training you have. In the real world, people don't line up to take you on one after the other. All fights are basically a pile of windmilling drunkards with varying amounts of pub paraphenalia thrown in for interest!

Last fight I had was me Vs five (armed with glass ashtrays and glasses). I got hammered pretty badly......but also connected a few real peaches on their chins before the end!

I've sworn to headbutt, bite noses (or anything I can) and gouge eyes next time I'm attacked. I have twelve years extra bitterness in me now, so I don't really care how whoever I'm fighting ends up.

You can't run away, the crowd is too thick.
THe hell, is the crowd made of bricks, shoving people always works.

You don't know why they hav taken a disliking to you, they just have.
So they must be Templars......

And yes. I would have the shit kicked out of me and everything on me stolen. But I'd get one good hit in before I went down.
Hmmmmm, maybe.....
I'll be there, waiting, making sure to take your wallet too :)

Throw other members of the crowd at them. Or yell for help and try to get the crowd/police to help.

In practice, I do find karate to be pretty crap against multiple opponents, but mainly, I find the training to be useful for the likes of blocking, quick strikes, bone damage (for instance, some blocks can be used offensively to snap a forearm/break an elbow) and the odd kick if I get some distance (if they're rushing me, chances are I'll kick down onto the lead guy's knee to do serious damage).

tl;dr - A fair bits useless, but stuff like the strikes and agility help in fights.

:EDIT:
Most of the time I just aim punches at weak points and have been known to headbutt. I'll also bite and gouge eyes if possible.

well a gang of pepole presumably with weapons, your only option is to go for breaks , and you are out numbered and presumably if you lose you would be in trouble(no duh). so i would go for breaks, the head, and the groin, i would break knees, elbows, collar bones, and hips. if i started to get overwhelmed i would go for the neck or stop their heart, i would push back with all the strength and emotion i have because that is how i fight. Before i got more than a little hurt and only broke a few of their bones chances are they would scatter because i would be making myself look as crazy as possible and be breaking their bones, screaming and blood generally make one seem more intimidating.

Like the OP i would use my training to make it look as shocking as possible, and in addition i would use my size to make me look even more intimidating. Throws would also be effective but i would avoid any that send them into the crowd, and instead favor throwing them into their fellows, and well they are stuck off balance go for their knees, on short kick to the top of the kneecap allows me to both close the gap to my advantage and take them out of the fight.

Need more variable input.

Size of the guys
Number of opponents
Weapons equipped by said guys
More detailed environmental analysis
etc, etc, etc

Every situation is winnable, but its a matter of determining the various factors vs plotting an appropriate strategy to counteract.
Say the average of the guys is around 5 foot 9 inches, about 80-100 kilos apiece. (175-200 pounds)

Say 4-5 guys, with knuckle dusters, makeshift punch spikes (keys between knuckles) and various other sharp and blunt things.

Crowd is very busy, not so thick that it is solid (the wall impression), but thick enough that you couldn't just disappear (You'd have to push, shove, etc.)
That's average size? Shit, the lightest weight you gave is 55 pounds heavier than me. Well, best bet would be to disarm one, and start swinging, aiming for the head so as to render them unconscious as quickly as possible.

Kick to the nuts, kick to the nuts, kick to the nuts, and yet another kick to the nights.

If that doesn't work, I use every dirty trick in the book, biting, attacks to the eyes/ears, anything to prolong the ass-whooping I'm about to receive.
TIGER CLAW!!!

I'd scream out a battle cry (like BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!) and then dive right into the Tiger Claw and draw as much as my enemies blood before the breaks it up. I'll try to fit in a good mauling if time allows...

Great question, now I'm trained in hand to hand combat and I'm also bat-shit crazy, so I'll brutally attack one of them and then savagely bite another. Once you start biting people, they tend to run.

depending, charge the smallest looking guy using your body as a battering ram, hopefully creating a opening long enougth to get your are out of there,

else cover your head and hope for the best.

if your feeling particularly dishonorable, loose control over your bowels also wet yourself, they will not want to come near you.

if its a group of people over 3 though your more than likely to be owned without some serious training.

Pull out my Shinai and try to keep them all in front of me. With luck, a good Tsugi Ashi, A nice Kiai and a hard swing at the leaders head would scare them enough to leave me alone. What, pretty much every time I'm in town I have my Shinai with me. <.<
Quick Googling has indicated that a "Shinai" is one of those kendo sword things.

Why the hell would you carry that to town with you? Nutter!

OT: Depending on the number of guys (and their size) I would change my tactics.
I'm a pretty big strong guy so if there are 4 or less, I'd just try to do as much damage as possible.

More than 4 though, I'm going to run at the smallest one, get him around the neck and put him between me and them and threaten to snap his goddamn neck.
