A well written gay character is someone that doesn't overtly obsess over the sexual aspect of their character all the time. It would be the same as if a straight character was obsessing over heterosexual sex all the time, life isn't all about sex (sex causes life I know, blah, blah) as there are other things that you can do with your time.
Show the gay character doing normal things. He or she goes to the mall, hangs out with friends, watches movies, plays video games, goes to the park, or any host of other activities. They ponder about philosophy. They help out in the community. They have friends and family they show affection to. They have jobs and careers that they dedicate time to. Show that these are normal people, not some archetype.
Homosexuality will cease to be a problem when we stop treating it as one, when we start treating gay people as normal human beings with thoughts, feelings and free will just like we heterosexual people. Let's start treating them like people, don't obsess over who they choose to love and show them common human decency and respect, and make them your friends and neighbors. If homosexuality is wrong under Christian morality, something that Jesus didn't even bother to talk about, then in that light I'll let God be the proper authority, but in the mean time I plan to show homosexuals kindness and respect.
