I've never come across a hacker on the PC version. That isn't to say they don't exist, but they've never bothered me, at least.

The PC version is fine IF you have a controller that you can use. I hear that modders have fixed the KB+M controls now, but I haven't tried the fix (I just have the resolution fix). With a controller it's literally just the console game without the framerate drops. It's still locked at 30FPS but Blight Town doesn't stutter anymore.

There's a mod to uncap the framerate, but I'm not sure if it still has issues. The last time I played the game ( a few months ago) the latest patch caused to fall through the floor if the game was running at 60FPS. Maybe someone who's played the game more recently can tell you if that's still an issue.

tl;dr Unmodded and with a controller, it's the same game you already own.

OH, and just so you're aware, even if you buy the game on Steam it uses Games For Windows Live for it's DRM and online stuff, not Steam.

I think theres a trainer around that allows you to get free stuff but I'm not really sure. The game looks pretty neat with the texture mod, and it plays very well. I've played it a lot on console and I cant remember the PC version being worse.

If your going to get it on PC make sure to play it with a controller, there are mods to make the keyboard+mouse controls better but the game was designed to be played on a game pad.

Second download DSFIX [http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mods/19/?] it unlocks the framerate and generally makes the game better on the PC, and if your looking to play it with friends try DSCFIX [http://darksouls.nexusmods.com/mods/334/?], it enhances the likelihood that you will find summon signs from people on your live friends list. Don't worry about the disclaimer saying you may get your account banned, this is just a precautionary message and no one to date has been banned for having these mods installed.

I play Dark Souls regularly on PC.

It's amazing. Get it. Corven's post is great, too, although I'd add you should check out the nexus site for Dark Souls mods.

darksouls.nexusmods.com

It mostly has texture packs.

I think the only issue you'll have is occasionally running into a European or Japanese player in Dark Souls PvP. The latency variation is quite hilarious in those circumstances.

Oh yeah, I'm well aware that it uses GFWL. Is it that bad though? I'm new to PC gaming and I never hear anything good about GFWL
There isn't really anything good to say about GFWL. It's not always terrible and actively trying to ruin your gaming experience, but it causes a lot more problems than conveniences; Most often is the fact that it occasionally just straight loses your saves, especially if you're not using a 'Local' profile (most of the time when you set it up you're going to inadvertently create an Online profile instead, because the two aren't one in the same and GFWL is horrible at actually conveying that sort of information, and I believe an Online profile is required for online play, but I could be wrong about that).

Again, it's not always a problem, and definitely not for everybody, but it's never been anything less than a nuisance in my experience.

As for the thread itself, I don't play Dark Souls connected to the internet, whatever I may be missing be damned, so I can't really tell you if it's infested by hackers on the PC or not. Sorry.

Pretty much this. It takes a bit of work to make it work on the PC, but I ended up liking it more than the console versions...mostly because there weren't any framerate issues.

For the sale price, it's an absolute must-buy. Fire up the resolution fix and a solid controller, and you're set.

BUT: it's very important that you know Dark Souls multiplayer isn't what you'd traditionally expect. You won't be able to easily meet up with your friends and co-op your way through the game. The multiplayer experience is meant to be almost entirely anonymous. There are some workarounds on PC now, but they're not exactly reliable/simple.

Also, regarding pvp: for the most part, you will be griefed. The game bases matchmaking on soul level, but players derive almost all of their power from gear upgrades. More often than not, you'll find yourself at a laughably severe disadvantage. On those rare occasions where the pvp is balanced, it's a blast. You can always opt-out by playing offline or in hollow mode, and you can also take some in-game steps to reduce the likelihood of invasion.

The hackers are definitely there as well. In general, I found the game more enjoyable as a solo experience. I had fun talking to my friends about the game as we progressed individually even if we rarely or never played together.

Ignoring the issues I have... (GFWL essentially means the game is unplayable for me since there will be no saves. I cannot log in to GFWL due to a fun little problem with the way it operates. If the games not installed on the OS partition, it will not run for me). Stick to the console version. Dont bother with the PC. It seriously has a lot of glaring 'IM A PORT' faults. Dont even try unless you absolutely need to (Due to your ps3 going out or something).

When you sign up, you will spend three hours cursing the day you were born.

Once you get over the hurdle of actually GETTING IN, it's not too intrusive.

Beyond that, IMMEDIATELY download the DSFix and Keyboard/mouse fix (unless you want to use a controller). You can find them on the Dark Souls Nexus (I think the files are small enough that you don't need a login for the site).

Once you've got all that up and ready, the game is pretty much exactly the same as the console versions, complete with absolute asshats who invade and pwn me constantly (and have made me put the game down for a while) (yes, I know they only show up when I'm human, bought gawrshDANGIT I hate that). No hackers so far, though.

I never had any problems at all with Dark Souls PC. Soon as i installed it i installed DSFix, so don't know what it's like without that, but with it it all works fine technically. As for hackers, didn't encounter anyone who was blatently hacking. Worst was latency problems and people lagging around all over the place, but whether that was down to some sort of hacking, them being in the US (UK here), or just my crappy internet i don't know.

I've never had a problem GFWL deleting my saves or anything like that, i have an online profile and just use that. It doesn't have any benefits whatsoever, but it does add an annoying extra 10-15 minutes between installing the game and playing it, which is why i dislike it.

I honestly have no idea what these glaring "IM A PORT" faults are. Stick on DSFix (takes all of 30 seconds to do), plug in a controller and it plays exactly like the console version. Much better if you have a decent PC.

I appreciate the feedback, but I've already logged about 500 hours into Dark Souls on PS3. Most of this isn't new to me :).
I've heard conflicting stories on the prevalence of hackers though. Some people have said that it's pretty much unplayable with the number of hackers, while others have only encountered them very occasionally.
I have met only two blatant hackers in my hundred or so hours with the game (half of which would be online play, I would guess), you'll probably find a lot of the people complaining about cheaters just got beat by overpowered builds or people exploiting the system to get epic gear with which to gank newbies and regular players with or perhaps simply the terrible netcode of the game.

You can't play offline with GFWL: the autosave function is disabled unless you're signed in to a profile. And it 'loses' your saves if you change your profile name (it gives you a default one, so you will most likely change it.) It's easily recoverable though, since GFWL just creates a folder for each profile with save data in it. (When you change your tag it makes a new folder, just copy the save data from the old folder)

I've not run into a hacker ever, just people who are more powerful than me (and some weaker too.) Take what you will from anecdotal evidence but I think that's all there is in this matter.

If you've played 500+ hours then you likely plan on using a controller, and if so it's the exact same as the console versions. You do need a (free) third-party program running in the background to use a PS3 controller with Windows (last I checked anyways) but it works fine and uses very little memory.

Even in its vanilla state there are no FPS drops or hangups anywhere and it doesn't require you to fix anything through modding to play it; mods are a bonus. The exception is if you plan on using your mouse and keyboard: then you need the fix mentioned in previous posts.
