Yes, this bothers me too, I'm only relived if it's a small number in total, not "only 5 british people" I guess it's for the relatives of anyone with family out there to put their mind at ease? or not rather...I dunno =/

Oh, believe me, it's one of the most annoying things about the mainstream Australian media.

I heard about that, I don't think they'll find it.
It is ridiculous that people do it, but it's the same with every country.

why are you insulted?

You live in the UK its telling you fellow countrymen are missing or dead, most newspapers that are worth their salt mention the deathtoll not just the British Death toll, but that certain death toll is important to people, you completely missed the point and grossly exaggerated the thread, its not saying that the other people who died are any less, its saying your fellow country men died and is bringing that to your attention As well as others from other countries.

does it bother you as much as it bothers me?
Extremely it's almost like "The Death Of one is a tragedy, The death of a million is just a statistic"

Except it's the death of Britons that is a tragedy and the foreign people are just numbers.

I think you're a whiny little... *cough* you're overreacting.

They specify how many Britons were killed, because it the bigger number it is, ther bigger odds that it might have been someone you know who was there.
It's the same everywhere.
Exactly, 228 people dead is a tragedy but for the families of those 5 brits they need to know the details as that could be their daughter/dad whatever. Every country does it

Oh it happens in France too and I hate it.
The most recent exemple I have in mind is when a French Yacht was hijack off th coast of Somalia. It made quite a ruckus whereas wehn other ship suffered the same thing,it barely got a mention in the news.

It kind of feels like:"[Insert tragedy here] claimed [insert large number here] lives and [insert small number here] frenchmen are wounded. Our hearts go to the families of the wounded."

I can't say it bothers me as all day yesterday, the reporting of the incident on british news was stating that 230 or so people were on the flight. they didn't make any mention of nationality

Unfortunately, it seems its the same where ever you go. I've never actually given it much thought, but now I have, I too think it's wrong, but at least they do mention the overall death toll. It's not like they're ignoring it completely...

No it doesn't annoy me. it's relevant. Why do YOU have to jump on your high horse about something as petty as this?

Whether or not this is the same for all national news sources, I noticed it stood out far more than it probably should have that "there were British people involved" in the BBC's report on the Air France story. They're people, their nationality is irrelevant.

you know i was having the exact same discusion about this with my parents.
but every country focuses on the people from there in these situations im sure in france they would be focusing on french people.
however it is stupid only focusing on the few instead of the many but hey thats mainstream media for you.

The media around the world is all the same - it doesn't care about other countries, just the one its broadcasting for. I do agree though, the media shouldn't just tell us about our countrymen on board, there are others involved too.
