Yeah, it's dumb they make big news stories where there might not even be any serious injuries but they'll be all like "17 British people unwillingly experienced a major sore throat" They just have to make the news seem more important than it actually is.

We don't get a lot of that around here really, well mainly because Malta is tiny and no one would care if half our population suddenly died. We pretty much just report local deaths, and i something like this airplane incident happens, they say exactly what happened but they put importance on the Maltese person cos... Well like i said Malta is tiny, pretty much everyone knows everyone else and it helps get the word out.

I think all media does this, wherever you are in the world.

So this Air France plane has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean. There were 228 people on board and it's feared they might have all died. These are the facts. It's bad and I have no wish to make light of it.

But this isn't what I've heard. Given that I live in the UK, all my sources of news are, of course, geared towards British people. So all the headlines I've seen are "5 BRITISH PEOPLE FEARED DEAD! - Oh, and there might have been some foreigners as well". This is not nearly as bad as a headline I saw several months ago which read, pretty much word for word: "17 Britons missing as Burma death toll reaches 100,000". And this happens every time there's a major incident involving Britons in some way.

Am I the only one disgusted by this method of reporting? The message seems fairly clear: lots of people might have or definitely have died, but the ones from the country you live in are the only ones worth caring about. There are some dead foreigners too, but they eat funny food and they're all criminals anyway, so who cares? I realise this might have turned into something of a rant, but it really ticks me off.

So I put it to you: do you encounter much of this where you live, do you have any interesting examples and, above all, does it bother you as much as it bothers me?
hey i know what your takling about i live in US news this morning said that 3 American were on this flight that said something along the lines of what your news said so annoying

I find headlines like that really annoying. I mean, obviously you should mention your countrymen who died, but when the title is along the lines of "ONE FINNISH PEACEKEEPER INJURED IN BOMBING" with huge letters covering half of the cover, and under it in tiny barely readable letters "thirty other peacekeepers died in the same bombing". In fact, half the time there aren't even those tiny letters.

But that's just how way things are these days, headlines are always twisted so that they get as much attention as possible, the wording is very often purposefully misleading.

On the news here it was only minutely mentioned that they were searching if there was any British people on the plane..y'know for the families or something

the rest of the world must care one hell of a lot more than even us British do about the British ^o)

Generally speaking a nation's media reports what has happened to its own nationals as a priority, for obvious reasons.

There's a (probably apocryphal) story where I'm from in the north-east of Scotland: Our local paper, the Press and Journal, published the following headline in 1912 - 'Titanic sinks: Aberdeen man feared drowned'.

It's the same everywhere.
Headline: First Australian relative suspected of getting Swine Flu overseas kinda!!!1!1one
Subheading: Mexico gets there 200th death, no one cares!

Yeah, its not just Britain, its everywhere, it gets really quite bad here in Australia
Well Mexico has had only 97 confirmed deaths
but back on topic
No matter in which country you leave or stay in they will always say if any of your fellow country men/women have died.
Like part of bbc news website today 'Schoolboy, 11, on missing flight'
So iff ya think they go on about it too much then move country

Change Australian with Romanian and you have my opinion on the local news. Oddly enough, in the incident the OP was talking about they made a pretty big story out of it, even though there's only 1 Romanian citizen missing.

I wouldn't go quite that far. Sure it's annoying but they're trying to make money and there are far worse things. Like the fact that things like fashion week is considered news, retarded things like World Youth Day (sum Christian week of celebration or some bullshit) and the fact that it is always dumbed down (Oh and the fact that channel 7 is SOOOOO Right Wing it's not even funny!

I block my ears and sing the "It's Satire!" song if ever 7 comes on.

And considering how little Australian media I pay attention to, you could say my test group is a little skewed.

its a british newspaper selling to british people, why shouldn't it gear its stories towards brits? people in britain are far morelikly to know/careabout another british person than any of the other 223 people, im not saying its not tragic that they died, but the britsh are going to care more about the britsh deaths

I don't know any incidents of it, but I can understand why you'd be annoyed by it.

yes,yes it does I find stupid giving importance to the fact that someone from your country died, what matters is that people died for some reason, and that is normally a bad thing by itself
