Well it's much better than it was during the time of the black plague. So I'm not complaining too much.

So, how did a book about these emotionless (read: characterless and boring) people play out?

I wouldn't like it, I value individualism highly.
Very highly.

I don't like it.
No identity, no relationships, no meaning...that's not living at all.
They'd sacrifice the dizzying highs of humanity for the sake of removing the terrible lows?
To that I say: no thanks. I am who I am because of my successes and hardships alike, and I'd not sacrifice either for the sake of 'security'. I'd go insane with the the tedium and monotony.

TLDR

seriously though, I did read it.

there's no interesting twist. gimme some alteration. C'mon, like a big brother, or a giver, or it ends up the leader's dead and they can only find his nose. something like that.

P.M. me if you think you know all the references I just made.

A world full of boring brainwashed slaves doesn't striek me as a grest place to live. If everybody is like everybody else then everybody is nothing.

If each person is just like the one after him then a person has no meaning, even to itself, it is only worth the effort to replace.

Wow I read that book in the senior year in High school. To answer your question I would say no. And I would infer that thats was the others point.

*spoiler alert* ------

The "primitave" character (don't remember his name) basically symbolized us today. To him the world was horrific, which is what many of us today would think of the World State society. Any too smart is physically drugged and made stupid. Anyone creative is restrained in some way so don't differ from the crowd. Passion and love making has been completely seperated from child birthing. (They view getting pregnant as nasty and immoral)
The world is basically a giant shade of gray with no individuals, everyone is the same, has the same tastes, the same IQ, the same thoughts. It's a world of blandness.

Anyone that can't be made to conform is simply seperated from society and sent to Iceland. They aren't totured or anything like that but kept seperate all the same.

The primitave man eventually hangs himself because he can't live in that world. He even tries to live in nature but is driven mad because people come and gawk and him wondering why he would give up what to them is a perfect life in their cities.

The book itself was very good, lots of symbolisms and things you can link to todays society.

The only way it could be worse is if we wait 10 years and all the wars that are coming with North Korea and the Middle East (not with each other) end with nuclear weapons.

I still hold that Brave New world is in fact a utopia, from our point of view yes the world state seems horrible, but if we where there we would not be unhappy, and would spend our entire lives feeling great without worries or fear (well unless you have too much alcohol in the blood :)

Things could be worse. In fact, I'd wager that things mainly seem worse than they have before because we all have a connection to current events. The internet is the source of our perception of the world today. That and Jane Fonda.

Oh, just adding that everyone is conditioned from birth to believe things the World State wants them to believe, so while we may think it's bland and unexciting (and it is to us), they think it is the best thing in the world.

I think Huxley provided us with the best utopia he could come up with, then picked it to pieces, showing us the human and cultural losses necessary for such a World State to function. Even 'science' (on of my highest regarded of things) is extremely censored, with any original or GOOD ideas banned by a regretful yet upbeat World Controller. This World Controller (one of 8) explains this world to us in the later chapters, and is one of the best chapters of any book I've ever read. I'm not going to answer the poll, because I've been trying to figure out the answer on my own, yet I still can't pick a side.

If everything was perfect in a material sense, but creativity, individuality, philosophy and emotion wear frowned upon and stamped out, then you would never be able to appreciate any of it. It would be like surviving solely off of your favorite food for life but never actually tasting it. It would be a specialized hell. Yes I have read Brave New World.
