I'm going to limit my list to large titles in the spirit of the thread (not for example, FTL or the Binding of Isaac), and also put games of the same series together (for variety):
1. Dark Souls (legendary. I could write a page on why I love Dark Souls)
2. Resistance/Resistance 2 (for thorough background, good collectibles and weapons, R2 for class-based co-op excellence)
3. Armored Core for Answer (Customisable mech)
4. MGS4/Peacewalker (Peacewalker was one of the best games on the PSP. MGS4 just well done, like every MGS)
5. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (mainly aesthetics, characterisation and universe, but also gameplay)
6. Skyrim (freedom, expansiveness)
7. Bayonetta (style, action, soundtrack - surprisingly)
8. Portal/2 (gameplay, humour)
9. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (soundtrack, style, variety of combat options, intricate monster ecology)
10. Battlefield Bad Company 2 (class-based, vehicles, generally fun)
Mass Effect didn't make it on due to the atrocious ending and negating about the salient game mechanic. Pending Metal Gear Rising, haven't played it but I like Platinum and I like the OST.

Does anyone actually read or do anything with these threads other than give their own list?
I read them. But yes, the OTs are publishers in disguise trying to build individualised marketing profiles. Just kidding. If that actually is the case, they're hopelessly inept at using the data.
