If I recall, it's one of the rules of the Death Note that whoever writes in it cannot go to either Heaven or Hell. I guess it's different in the manga.
In the manga Ryuk tells Light that, and it's in the rules. At the end of the manga we get a flashback to their first meeting and Ryuk telling him that, and Light going: "Is that because Heaven or Hell don't exist in the first place?" and Ryuk is impressed Light saw through his trick.

'A person who uses the Death Note can go neither to Heaven or Hell' is not a LIE technically, it's just misleading on purpose.

It's been a couple of years since I last re-watched the series so I could be wrong, but I don't remember that being in the show. If I recall, it's one of the rules of the Death Note that whoever writes in it cannot go to either Heaven or Hell. I guess it's different in the manga, but I don't read any manga, the only graphic novel I follow is The Walking Dead.
It's less that it's different and more that in rewriting the ending the anime left out a flashback to the scene which clarified the statement that Light wouldn't get to go to either Heaven or Hell. Nobody goes to Heaven or Hell because neither exists. You die, that's it. The end of your life is the end of your existence.

I guess it ended up on the cutting room floor when it came to making the show, that's a shame. However, I always liked the idea that using the notebook came at a terrible price, knowing anyone can doodle in it with impunity kind of loses something for me.

What's the world coming to when you can't even trust gods of death?

I quite liked series 1, and how 2 ended. Never liked Near, I don't know what it was about him that I didn't like, all I can say is that I hated him.

I did like the way the story unfolded, some parts when Light was close to being found out, I found myself hoping he would find some way to get away with it. Then after, realizing what it took for him to get away with it actually made me feel a little bad.
