Might want to consider Mario 64.
Not only for the N64 having the first analog controller of consoles, but also for showing games in general, and platformers in particular, how to do 3d right.

Duke Nukem 3D should be in there.

Quite revolutionary, allowed actual looking around the map, rooms on top of rooms, parody of pop culture/humour etc.

And was extremely successful.

The Original E.T. and the 1983 videogame crash, and I personally think you should use Bioshock to talk about the player to character relationship. Also add Quake to the Wolfenstein/DOOM/DOOM2 section because it's also a significant part of the FPS lineage. Maybe you should add a bit on the indie developers who are currently making games that can rival AAA titles like Hawken and Interstellar Space Marines.

I'm currently developing about video games and their social impact, but I would like it done in such away that there is a low barrier of entry so someone can be unfamiliar with gaming and gaming culture. To help people familiarize themselves with gaming I'm developing a chapter about video game history. This would be an aid to what games can offer society and change their opinions of what gaming is in an unbiased way.
This does not sound unbiased to me. It sounds biased towards "games have a lot of (positive things) to offer society". Of course, I don't know what the rest of your book is about. But I think in order for you to write an unbiased book, you have to include research and arguments against gaming without the express purpose of debunking them. But maybe you're already doing that, in which case you can ignore what I just said.

I need help making this list cause I'm fairly young and probably missing a bunch of classic games and I don't have a console, which cripples me as far as talking about games cause I haven't played a ton of them.

So far I wish to discuss:

Pong
Pac-Man
Polybius (Nice little footnote, don't you think?)
Tetris
The Legend Of Zelda / Ocarina Of Time
Super Mario Bros.
Mario 64
Wolfenstein 3D / Doom / Doom 2
Half-Life
Postal 2/ Super Columbine Massacre RPG
Grand Theft Auto 3/4
Portal
inFamous
LittleBigPlanet

These are the few I remember off the top of my head. If there are any that should be removed/added.etc feel free to post below. Again, I want games that have left an impact either in video game history, controversies such as the case with Super Columbine and Postal 2, or show what video games can be in the future like Portal and how it is used at Wabash College as part of the freshmen courses.

Thanks, and you will get credit for any contributions.
I never played inFamous, but why is it on the list? Seems like a pretty regular game to me, with no influence on anything else.

I would like to second the Duke Nukem contribution of Rabish Bini, but I would like to add that I think that when you talk about a sequel, you should also briefly mention the original(s). It seems a little odd to me to talk about GTA 3, but not briefly say something about the evolution that game has undergone compared to the overhead style of the earlier GTAs (and the same pretty much goes for Duke Nukem's evolution to 3D and later to DNF).

I'm also missing a couple of gaming genres and titles that are heavily associated with some consoles. Now, I'm no expert, and maybe you don't want to talk about all genres and devices, but here are some other suggestions:

Beat 'em up: Street Fighter 2 (I don't think there's a SF1), and maybe Mortal Kombat
MMO: World of Warcraft, but you should also look into some history here (i.e. Ultima, EverQuest)
JRPG and overall classic: Final Fantasy (I don't know most of the series, but especially 7 is an absolute classic and I definitely think it belongs on your list)
WRPG: I'm not sure which game(s) you should mention here, but there is a huge history. I personally really like the Baldur's Gate series, and I think the Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Planescape Torment are probably important, but the history goes back way further (to text-based stuff)
Racing: Need for speed?
Sports: FIFA, Madden?
Shooters:
- What you already have
- Call of Duty. It's the most successfull entertainment product in the history of everything, it innovated some shit and everybody is mimicking it now. I really don't think you can omit this.
- Gears of War? I don't know, but I hear it's credited with the much maligned chest high walls.
- Halo? Again, I'm not sure, but I hear it's had a huge influence, and it was heavily associated with the XBOX
- Definitely Quake, maybe Unreal and Counter-Strike.
Platformers: Prince of Persia, Mario and Sonic
Turn based strategy: Civilization? I really don't know this one.
Survival Horror: Silent Hill? Again, I don't know.

And there are probably many more (both genres and games).

Massively converluted list of game you've got there now... Keep it simple with big early games, Pong, Pac-Man that sort of thing and then one or two big revolutionary release from each leap forward in tech.
Special mention to SpaceWar! As well. If you haven't heard of it look it up, argueable the very first video game, long before Pong.

Can't help but notice there are no racing games on that list. 'Hardcore' racers at as Grand Tourismo and Forza are relativly niche games, but Mario Kart's probably been cracked out at more parties than beer has in recent years (note: precicely no research went into this claim).

Might want to include Goldeneye and Halo on the list. Goldeneye helped pioneer the concept that FPS games could be done well on consoles, and Halo greatly refined the formula (as well as almost single-handedly saving the Xbox console).

Real Time Strategy games might be worth mentioning. Dune 2 and Command and Conquer really got the ball rolling, and Starcraft turned it into a global phenomenon (be sure to mention South Korea's obsession with the game).

I would also mention some of the more influential MMO games. Ultima Online helped popularize the genre, Everquest got the mainstream public interested, and World of Warcraft...well sheesh, it's got over 12 million subscribers now.

It's hard to refrain from mentioning lots of my favorite games, but I realize that you can't cover everything in just one chapter. As such, I'll just stop here.

Wait you mention Fallout 3 and inFamous for moral systems, are you talking about how not to do morality or the right way to do morality?

Both, they are a reaction to how morality can be used in the game to change game and add depth and insight into a character.
Uhhhh, I don't think you should use inFamous or Fallout 3 as examples of morality done well, you're better off finding a game that has more grey options than black vs white.

Seems like you don't have any RPGs (Other than FFVII). If you want to talk about FF VII you might think about including some of the earlier FF (FF VI is pretty popular) and things like Earthbound (Mother in Japan) and/or Crono Trigger. It's ultimately your call but RPGs are still a big genre and you might want to include more.

Edit: btw pretty good list so far. I'd love to read something like this. Best of luck.
