I'm currently developing about video games and their social impact, but I would like it done in such away that there is a low barrier of entry so someone can be unfamiliar with gaming and gaming culture. To help people familiarize themselves with gaming I'm developing a chapter about video game history. This would be an aid to what games can offer society and change their opinions of what gaming is in an unbiased way.
This does not sound unbiased to me. It sounds biased towards "games have a lot of (positive things) to offer society". Of course, I don't know what the rest of your book is about. But I think in order for you to write an unbiased book, you have to include research and arguments against gaming without the express purpose of debunking them. But maybe you're already doing that, in which case you can ignore what I just said.

I need help making this list cause I'm fairly young and probably missing a bunch of classic games and I don't have a console, which cripples me as far as talking about games cause I haven't played a ton of them.
So far I wish to discuss:
Pong
Pac-Man
Polybius (Nice little footnote, don't you think?)
Tetris
The Legend Of Zelda / Ocarina Of Time
Super Mario Bros.
Mario 64
Wolfenstein 3D / Doom / Doom 2
Half-Life
Postal 2/ Super Columbine Massacre RPG
Grand Theft Auto 3/4
Portal
inFamous
LittleBigPlanet
These are the few I remember off the top of my head. If there are any that should be removed/added.etc feel free to post below. Again, I want games that have left an impact either in video game history, controversies such as the case with Super Columbine and Postal 2, or show what video games can be in the future like Portal and how it is used at Wabash College as part of the freshmen courses.
Thanks, and you will get credit for any contributions.
I never played inFamous, but why is it on the list? Seems like a pretty regular game to me, with no influence on anything else.
I would like to second the Duke Nukem contribution of Rabish Bini, but I would like to add that I think that when you talk about a sequel, you should also briefly mention the original(s). It seems a little odd to me to talk about GTA 3, but not briefly say something about the evolution that game has undergone compared to the overhead style of the earlier GTAs (and the same pretty much goes for Duke Nukem's evolution to 3D and later to DNF).
I'm also missing a couple of gaming genres and titles that are heavily associated with some consoles. Now, I'm no expert, and maybe you don't want to talk about all genres and devices, but here are some other suggestions:
Beat 'em up: Street Fighter 2 (I don't think there's a SF1), and maybe Mortal Kombat
MMO: World of Warcraft, but you should also look into some history here (i.e. Ultima, EverQuest)
JRPG and overall classic: Final Fantasy (I don't know most of the series, but especially 7 is an absolute classic and I definitely think it belongs on your list)
WRPG: I'm not sure which game(s) you should mention here, but there is a huge history. I personally really like the Baldur's Gate series, and I think the Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Planescape Torment are probably important, but the history goes back way further (to text-based stuff)
Racing: Need for speed?
Sports: FIFA, Madden?
Shooters:
- What you already have
- Call of Duty. It's the most successfull entertainment product in the history of everything, it innovated some shit and everybody is mimicking it now. I really don't think you can omit this.
- Gears of War? I don't know, but I hear it's credited with the much maligned chest high walls.
- Halo? Again, I'm not sure, but I hear it's had a huge influence, and it was heavily associated with the XBOX
- Definitely Quake, maybe Unreal and Counter-Strike.
Platformers: Prince of Persia, Mario and Sonic
Turn based strategy: Civilization? I really don't know this one.
Survival Horror: Silent Hill? Again, I don't know.
And there are probably many more (both genres and games).
