I'm with ZP, this game was shit. I am a 33 year old profesional. I have been gaming for 25 years. DS is one of the worst games I have ever played. It is punishing you for playing it. Yes there is a reward for the chalange kind of thing there, but it just isn't worth it. The combat mechanics are shitty, the controls are shitty, the sound is sub-par, and so are graphics are meh. I give it props for being different, but I am not a massocist. I can't devote 2 hours to a game and get nowhere and get nothing for my efforts. He is not misleading you, this is shit.
I'm a 32 year old professional. Been playing games since the Pong machine my parent's owned. Hm, a 33 year old professional that uses "shitty", "props" and spells it: chalange... Masochist I'll forgive... Are you really as old as you say?
Demons' Souls, IMO, is the best RPG of this current gen (yes that includes ME and DA:O). The controls are not "shitty", they are in fact, quite spot on. If they were "shitty", there'd be no point in playing the game as the game is about combat and exploration. I beat Demon's Souls for the first time last week. It took me about 1.5 - 2 weeks to beat it.
Yes, there is a learning curve (as with all games). Yes, you will die. Most of the time, it's my own stupidity that causes my death, lately (like just feeling invincible, going too fast which makes me fall off a ledge somewhere).
As per above statements, as you progress through a level, you will unlock shortcuts that allow quick passage to the boss (if the boss is your target). So the checkpoint thing is neither here nor there.
Is the game worth it? An emphatic YES!
Yahtzee was unfair, sure. But isn't he always? It is sad that the mindless Yahtzee robots (they creep me out) won't get this game. Many here at the Escapist cry about the lack of innovation in the JRPG. Well, here it is, try it for yourself.
Finally, no I'm no masochist. Actually, I've done entire levels on my first try with no deaths. The game really isn't as hard as people claim. In fact, it's almost too easy if you understand the enemies' patterns.
