Ok, Yahtzee isn't really a reviewer... He's a critic. He points out everything bad about a game, and I actually find myself agreeing with everything he says. It's a question of scale. Something he makes out to be totally game-destroying, may only be a niggling annoyance to me. But I would like to try Demons Souls, just need a PS3... and those 10-15 games that are better than Demons Souls, before I can try it.

I'm with ZP, this game was shit. I am a 33 year old profesional. I have been gaming for 25 years. DS is one of the worst games I have ever played. It is punishing you for playing it. Yes there is a reward for the chalange kind of thing there, but it just isn't worth it. The combat mechanics are shitty, the controls are shitty, the sound is sub-par, and so are graphics are meh. I give it props for being different, but I am not a massocist. I can't devote 2 hours to a game and get nowhere and get nothing for my efforts. He is not misleading you, this is shit.
I would have to respectfully disagree. I absolutely love Demon's Souls despite it's difficulty.

I find the combat mechanics and controls very well tuned as you require to plan out your attacks. You can't go around flailing your sword everywhere or you will die. Each stab is meticulously calculated and each thrust could be your last so you have to make it count.
The sound, again I personally think, is superb as the ambiance of the palace, the crackle of a burning fire, the caws of the many crows picking at the dead bodies everywhere, can make for one paranoid experience and serve to make you even more nervous.
The graphics, once again as my personal opinion, are extremely well done and serve to help you immerse into the world of Boletaria. The atmosphere, the feeling of impending doom, the feeling that you are alone yet someone out there is suffering the same thing you are (the ghosts of players go along as you play the game) is all very well done.

While you personally may hate it, I personally love it. I respect your opinion and hopefully you respect mine. Thing is, the OP could learn something like this and just not care about Yahtzee's opinion. While I personally found his "review" lacking, if he doesn't like it that's his problem.

I'm a 32 year old professional. Been playing games since the Pong machine my parent's owned. Hm, a 33 year old professional that uses "shitty", "props" and spells it: chalange... Masochist I'll forgive... Are you really as old as you say?

Demons' Souls, IMO, is the best RPG of this current gen (yes that includes ME and DA:O). The controls are not "shitty", they are in fact, quite spot on. If they were "shitty", there'd be no point in playing the game as the game is about combat and exploration. I beat Demon's Souls for the first time last week. It took me about 1.5 - 2 weeks to beat it.

Yes, there is a learning curve (as with all games). Yes, you will die. Most of the time, it's my own stupidity that causes my death, lately (like just feeling invincible, going too fast which makes me fall off a ledge somewhere).

As per above statements, as you progress through a level, you will unlock shortcuts that allow quick passage to the boss (if the boss is your target). So the checkpoint thing is neither here nor there.

Is the game worth it? An emphatic YES!

Yahtzee was unfair, sure. But isn't he always? It is sad that the mindless Yahtzee robots (they creep me out) won't get this game. Many here at the Escapist cry about the lack of innovation in the JRPG. Well, here it is, try it for yourself.

Finally, no I'm no masochist. Actually, I've done entire levels on my first try with no deaths. The game really isn't as hard as people claim. In fact, it's almost too easy if you understand the enemies' patterns.
OK, first off. I could care less if I mis-type a word on the internet? it?s the internet. With typographical errors, I still think my posts are 90% more legible than most. And yes, I am a 33yo chemical engineer/geek.

If you enjoy it, more power to ya. But I would much rather spend my gaming time on something I consider fun and not needlessly frustrating. And I call it needlessly frustrating because I wasn?t having fun. Nothing about this game was fun. The combat mechanics felt like something form last gen. Yes the controls are shitty or in words you might like better, clunky and unresponsive. The dodge move and timing are unreliable at best. After playing the same area like a dozen times (with my experience in gaming) I should have progressed to something more, but no. Maybe I would have gotten better, but after I played for two hours and effectively got nowhere, I quit and moved on to things I could actually have fun with. And isn?t that the point of games, to have fun. But hey, not everybody likes every game, but I do think this game is a colossal waste of time; literally, it is designed to waste your time. But, again, it?s my opinion.

I can enjoy a ?hard? game on occasion (NG2, COD4 on Veteran, etc?) and admittedly I not a big RPG fan (though I loved Mass Effect). But I really wanted to like this game, since there isn?t much reason to use my PS3 other than BR, and I just couldn?t.

Well worded argument, and I'm glad you like it (many seem to), but I do think you have a little masochist in you. Maybe I am just spoiled by current generation game?s ?accessibility?. Most games you can play for a half hour and actually make progress (and save). I just don?t have the time needed to put into this game (if I?m not having fun). And I have played many time consuming games (Oblivion and Oblivion with guns aka Fallout 3), but at lease after 30 minutes of those games, you have gotten somewhere. Now I?m sure I could have mastered the combat system (because no, I didn?t swing and pray), but there is no room for error. Two to three mistakes and you have to replay the last 30 minutes. And not only that, but they set up ?traps? that there is no way you can see coming? so you take damage or die and get to repeat the last 30 minutes until you find the next ?kill you? trap. Maybe if the enemies were randomly generated, I don?t know. But I just got sick of playing the same section over and over only to get a little further to find an archer hiding up high that there is no way I would know he was there only to shoot me in the face so I could repeat it all over again. It was pointless. But again, this is my opinion. I give you major props for getting through this game though.

And ZP is not really a source for ?reviews? for me. I just go for the entertainment value. I actually disagree with him a lot. For example, I LOVED Dead Space. Although, I was a little satisfied to see him rip on this game, because I felt the same way.

I will say that this game did remind me of my old school Atari and Nintendo days, and reminded me that I?m glad gaming has evolved since those days.

In defense of Yahtzee:

I disagreed with some aspects of his review of Demon's Souls as well as his comments in Extra Punctuation. If you dig back you can find them, the points I made were lengthy so I won't repere them here (and also I doubt he read them, or any other fan feedback for that matter).

That said a lot of what he said WAS on the money, allowing for the fact that he didn't like the game. Truthfully it seems he comes back and says he actually liked games really reamed, and later says he hated games he implied he liked (look at his Grand Theft Auto 4 review and then his later comments in regards to it and what he said in justifying them). However he HAS remained fairly consistant in his dislike of RPGs, and action RPGs. Him not liking an unusually hard action RPG designed for hardcore fans with a masochistic streak should not surprise anyone.

He *DID* omit mentioning some aspects of the game, but also consider that he had a negative impression of the Multi-player as he basically said the messages and such left behind were usless. Going by his experience with the messages I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he chose to entirely forego trying to summon people and such.

I'll also say that the resurrection/phantom mechanics are NOT well explained (which is actually a point against the game to be fair) and despite how some people might feel there are constant questions about how all of this works on sites like Gamefaqs.

People who get their consumer advice from Yahtzee are most likely idiots.

But to defend the guy, He only has a couple days to play a game and review it. So it is reasonable for him to dislike games like Demons souls.
Plus, the game explains almost nothing to you so you have to discover the ins and outs while you're playing it. And ZP only played the game up untill the Tower Knight entrance, wich means he barely scratched the surface.
