Video games consist of tons of reading. What makes one form of reading better than another? They need to make games that increase reading skills that don't stink.
There were tons of those games back in the day.

Those look like pretty solid games. What ever happened to those? I was referring to those "educational" games that teach you how to type and other things along those lines.
Oh those. Yeah those have mostly sucked. There's a couple good ones (Oregon Trail) but not really. There's some pretty promising ones for really young children on the Leapster hand held. But that's about it.

I fucking love to read, I always have. That is why I play video games. I play to examine the plot, the character development, the relationships between characters and the themes. I never really care about gameplay or graphics. I'm in it for the story.

I liked reading til I took AP English.

Then I was like "meh". At least to fiction books anyway.

ok here's the thing. No matter what, if you happen to stumble upon something you actually might think about possibly liking to read, then you might give it a shot, or you just say "WTF... NO!!! I'll just stare blankly at the telly.." ok?
People who like to read are like people who like to play games, they have to try it, before they can get to liking it... It's the trying it in the first place that's the problem. It's a priority thing, My parents gave me a book when I started being able to read, I read it, and liked it. Then one day my Uncle was a bit lazy when "Babysitting" me, so he slammed me in front of his pc, and... you get the picture. I Read AND play videogames... before what my uncle did I had never given it a single thought... ever. Now people think I don't read at all... I have a freaking LIBRARY in my room... seriously, 938 books read... it's a hobby like everything else... Omg this is a long post... I'll stop now, or I'll never get to eat...

how's about this:

A. find some games that stimulate the child's mind. I attribute being able to read in Kindergarten partially to Pokemon. if I was gonna catch em all, I NEEDED to read. I lacked the skills to achieve my goals, worked hard, and gained said skills

B. introduce the child to books that would be interesting to them. I generally read children's books (Dr. Seuss and whatnot). I REALLY started to read with Harry Potter. my mom read the books with me, and I've been reading ever since. it's all about bonding. not every child will like to read. but you can always try to encourage them by introducing them to books they might like.

C. don't do this. depriving a child of entertainment to get them to read will send the message that reading is a LAST resort as far as entertainment goes; never EVER read unless there is NOTHING else to do. if anything, the bribing with games/spending quality time approach would work MUCH better.

it's really quite easy, all it takes is a little common sense and the will to spend time with your child

My parents forced me into reading sometimes. Honestly, reading is one of those things that I can't ever be bothered to do, but once I do start I can't stop until I'm done. It's like doing chores around the house or schoolwork-- I feel so disinterested but once I'm going I'm like a freight train.

But honestly, I think people should be allowed to choose their own entertainment. Encourage reading, but don't force them to do it. Forcing kids to do stuff won't make them like it anymore, it'll do the exact opposite. And as soon as they're not under the power of their parents anymore they're going to stop. That's what happened to me.

Though it's funny. I watch all my TV with closed captioning on and always play video games with subtitles on (if I have the option to).

The technique my parents used was to read to me before bed, then get me into Redwall. When I started to get better at reading on my own, they would stop in the middle of a Redwall chapter and say they were too tired to keep reading, so then I had to read it myself. Makes reading it's own system of reward.

What the hell?! Clearly whoever thought of this doesn't have children.

Anyways, I love reading, and I read MORE after over-stimulating myself with electronics.

Heck, most of my reading is on the internet nowadays. Back in the day..(he said ironically), I used to devour my entire local and school library. Which of course, lead to my mom buying me several grands worth of books over several years, which I still have, though I've read most of them at least 5 or so times. Then again, I tend to like reading.

I read when I feel like it. If my parents ban me from stuff to make me read. I will for sure not do it. Last book I read was Fight Club. Just as good as the movie if your so bothered to read it.

Terrible idea. Chances are the kid will spite you and not even read. Then what? He's permenantly pissed at you for taking away his source of entertainment. And what if he does read? Where's the guarantee that he'll find a book that speeks to him? That keeps him interested? And also, what is the point of reading for pleasure? To get a narrative right? To experience conflict and characters in a well written world. Video games (good ones) achieve the same if not better effect then books. If you want a kid to read, pique his interest in something, then hand him a book about it. Eventually he'll work his way into other books.

I am sorry I am just quoting so I can tell you what you should do with your avatar. You need to get like a gif that is of something like someone about to get shot in a movie or about to reach up a girls skirt then have it cut to that i think it would be hilarious.

Now on topic. I think that is bullshit. You shouldn't force someone to read to get entertainment. Hell I have had at least 1 system from every generation since the NES and I still love to read. Its just getting hard to actually buy books since I have no job. But once I get a job I can tell you my Nook will start getting used A LOT.

The idea behind this article, I believe, is that boys (and ONLY boys, as girls do not play video games apparently) who do not like to read should not be pandered to by giving them "gross-out" books to read or bribed with video games in order to get them to read. Rather, they should be deprived of all electronic stimuli until they are so starved for entertainment they HAVE to read to relieve the boredom.

Hm. Discuss, Escapists: Rational, logical suggestion? Or is someone WAY overstepping their bounds here?
I am a boy who does not read books, but i also play games with over 50,000 pages of dialogue so im gonna go ahead call it even, just make them play different video games

What's so special about reading? If someone wants to experience a story or learn the writer's message, whatever it may be, there are plenty of other ways to go about it besides reading a book.

That article made me laugh my nuts off. I read as a child, because my parents read Roald Dahl books to me and I loved them. As I got older, I had to read for school and learned to hate reading. Now I'm an avid reader. Why? RPGs, son. Before I started gaming, which was initially meant to replace reading for me, I vowed I would never touch another book, because so many of them were pure shit. One Xenosaga later, I was up to my eyeballs in german philosophy and romantic literature. Haven't looked back since.

Kids don't read because kids don't want to read. Not alot you can do about that.

[small]The "Butt series" is known as the "Bum series" in Australia, where it originated. The author has written a number of controversial-ish books for kids, which nobody should ever read, because they flat out tell kids they should commit mass murder. If inciting terrorism is bad, telling people to "blow up the entire universe and kill every living thing in it" is much worse, surely?[/small]

Also, you never use the word "obviously" in an article meant to be taken seriously. If it's obvious, you're not supposed to be writing about it.

Im not a parent, but if I was I certainly would try to find any way I could to get my kid away from games and do something a little more intellectual. When they are more grown up I dont care though.

Hell, my parents repeatedly confiscated my consoles to get me to go out and play instead of watch tv and play games.
