I've been playing Watch Dogs lately and while I am stuck on a particular mission (because I really suck at driving games and WD requires being passable at driving to advance the story) I've noticed something about the games overall message. (also outlined in Yahztee's review) In WD the city of Chicago's infrastructure is being controlled by ctOS, an all-encompassing computer system. While WD assumes that the players are all tin-foil hat types and will fight a system like this "because reasons" the only negative aspect to this system actually shown is... the player. The player is the one hacking the system and using it for nefarious purposes but that's it. That is the entire down side right there. The only reason that the police aren't on the scene interrupting the vigilante missions are because they're written that way to keep the game fun.

Watch Dogs, coupled with an interaction with some rather sheltered people, made me curious as to what are some examples or concepts of a Utopia? So, tell me about yours! How is it governed? Is there money? (Star Trek tried pretending for the longest time that a society could function without an economy but how would that work? They eventually had to break down and introduce "gold pressed latinum" after all) How is crime handled?

I'd ask for anyone posting to please not waste time by tearing down other people?s views, we get far too much cynicism here as it is. :)

My utopia would be an approximate cross between a forum like this, virtual reality and Second Life. Imagine a world where you could plug yourself in and then look like whatever you wanted, do whatever activities you imagine, live in whatever you imagine. After-all, in a virtual world made of bits and data, producing fantastic architecture and scenery would require no resources other than a programmer, making them relatively cheap compared to real life works. It would effectively be a post-scarcity society and one where it would be impossible to be physically hurt or killed, what's not to like?

My Utopia would involve a lot less people, no cities and no labor done outside of survival or pleasure. Then I would long for a utopia with civilization and without the struggle to survive.. honestly I'm happy with what I've got.

One where Tumblr. doesn't latch onto the first thing that isn't "conformis" and "neo-nazism disguised as conservatism", where bad movies aren't celebrate. In the words of Shizune Hakamichi, "The critically-panned, big budget sequel to the low-buget, sleeper hit" that gets crapped out all the time. A world where parents care about their children's entertainment, they won't just stick any direct to DVD Disney shit on and expect their child to put up with.. oh, wait, children are stupid, so they don't care, because there are PUPPIES!

Oh yeah, famine and child slavery and poverty in Uganda and the United Kingdom and all that and the dveloping world and all that jazz.

Oh, and everyone loves strawberry/blueberry mix slushies, and there is an endless supply coming form a self-moderating, completely uninterptable waterfall deep in the jungle of Canada.

My utopia is... hmmm...

Got it,MILFS. They're everywhere, everyone is a MILF. It would be awesome. Everything else is the same but all the people on the earth get transformed into hawt MILFs. I mean seriously who wouldn't want to live in such a place.

A more libertarian society where people are free to live their life in peace, so long as they aren't hurting people. This goes for people within and outside the nation. Gay marriage is legal, and spying is illegal. We have our priorities backward. This post is becoming dangerously political, though, so...

...

another Persona game? I'll settle for that.

True anarchy.

Now, hear me out. In real life, this wouldn't work at all because we need laws to keep everything stable. However, this is a hypothetical question. This hypothetical "true anarchy" that I propose is a society where there is no government because there doesn't need to be a government. It has no large-scale laws because the people in it know and respect what they should and shouldn't do. Additionally, the need to commit crime and do bad things doesn't exist, either; either money doesn't exist at all or everyone has enough to fit their needs. People in this society don't steal, for example, because they have the resources or means to get whatever they want legitimately. Additionally, people in this society don't do things with personal profit in mind; sure, it may be a pleasant side-effect, but the drive to do things for the benefit of themselves and others far outweighs monetary and material benefits. Basically, I'm proposing a society without assholes. That's all there is to it, really.

Barring that, of course, there is always the society where I can lock myself in a simulator (either like the Holo-Deck or some kind of virtual reality machine) and bend that reality to my whims. It'd be better if I was actually a reality warper, but I'll take what I can get.

No utopia at all. To me, the idea of a utopia is utterly and truly boring. If everything is all hunky dory then all the good things in life are much less meaningful. There is no "bad times" to compare things to. You really can't appreciate light until you've seen darkness.

If I had to create a "utopia" then it'd be something with this programmed in. So, I suppose a country with mandatory spartan-esque military service for two years, required of everyone when they hit 18. Maybe if everyone has that idea of what having a tough life is like, they'll be more appreciative of what they have.

I think my utopia would be something very close to what is depicted in Starship Troopers. The entire way the Federation functions is so efficient and fair that I don't see how it could be bad.

Key Largo is better than that tourist trap. :)

OT: Speaking of which, definitely my hometown of Key Largo, FL. Nice people, small-town atmosphere, great food (if you like fishing) and the non-fast food restaurants are all locally owned and operated. No Applebees, Chili's or Friday's there, just good ol' mom-n-pop establishments. Also great diving and fishing, and awesome sunrises/sunsets. Downside is the humidity over the summer but its just another excuse to wear shorts and a tank top.

hmm as said above utopia would never exist or if it did not for long cause people wouldn't be able to appreciate how good they had it, but I would like a world were we all got along (well for the most part there will always be small groups that aren't happy)cause were all human after all. And in that world i would like us to think long term and put our race first instead of ourselves, yes people make profit but as stated in previous comment that would be a nice by product. we wouldn't be profit driven and greedy and we would embrace nature in a way were it co-exists with us and our technology as much as possible. If it wasn't for greed etc, we wouldn't have most the problems we have now (also all religions would get along because everyone entitled to there own beliefs and and we all accept that as long as it not forced on people and as long as that belief isn't that you should kill people laws of the land also come before religious laws they are different)

So basically our world, there just less A-holes and we actually care for out planet and our race as a whole :)

My utopia is a true black-and-white situation to the extremes... In the daytime, everything's so peaceful and equal that any of us who could enter this reality would be wondering if they're truly dreaming or not... However, in the nighttime, it's the EXACT opposite... At this point, you choose to either live in the light and sleep through the night... or live in the darkness and sleep through the day... No one can live through both situations and actually live to tell the tale, because everyone's molecular body can only handle one way or the other... There are never any grey areas no matter how many scenarios our minds could question in this particular reality and only those that are both and raised in this utopia of a reality can understand that reality better than anyone else...

Key Largo sounds like the perfect place for me. xD Lived in Florida for all my life and never visited the place, even though I have had a chance to once or twice.

My idea of a utopia? I honestly haven't a clue, but it is a question I have always asked myself. The closest thing I have would be a place where I can spend my days peacefully with some close friends... and having magic or some other fantasy stuff would be nice as well.

A world where people are completely rational and where our monkey-brains are no longer holding us back.

Some may think that "completely rational" means "emotionless machine", and that is one of the biggest things that pisses me off about these types of utopias depicted in fiction most of the time. Most people have absolutely no idea just how ridiculously irrational we all are, so when they try to show that someone is completely rational, they depict them burning babies or something to show that they are not "ruled by the useless emotion of love" without even stopping and thinking how stupid what they wrote is. Being rational has nothing to do with morals, it's about, well, rationality. Assessing something, finding out the best solution and acting upon it without letting preconceived notions or personal agendas get in the way. Sounds easy and obvious, but practically none of use do it, because none of us can. We are literally under-equipped for the task, and it shows in our history and in our everyday life all the same.

Wars are irrational. Fundamentalism is irrational. Denialism is irrational. Overconsumption is irrational. Nationalism, racism, and all the other "isms" are, at their core, completely irrational.

Name any societal ill or stupid behavior humanity (or subsets of humanity) engages in, and at its core you always find the same thing: our monkey-brain is irrational and still tells us that heavier things fall faster, to be afraid of the things that would pose danger to a small animal in the jungle/savanna, to discriminate other human beings based on whether you can identify with them (and thus convince your monkey-brain that they belong in the same tribe as you), that aggression and dominance is a good mating strategy and that if you want something that someone else also wants, use violence.

Until we figure out how to get rid of these evolutionary baggages there can be no utopia, since our nature would stop us from even properly planning out and creating one, let alone keeping it up without completely destroying it from the inside.

Actually, Star Trek's Economy was there, it just wasnt based on money within the Federation, outside the Federation they came up with some weird nebulous monetary system.

As for my utopia:

Home atomic printing. Decentralized means of near infinite creativity.

Empathic Anarchy, governments are rendered obsolete due to symbiotic global interaction through tech.

Space-Time manipulation for space travel.

Backup body printing. (In effect: immortality)

Dark Energy as a power source. If it can pull galaxies apart it's gotta be powerful.

Resource Based Economy (Or some functional equivalent) to manage it.

As for culture, some blend of ancient tribal ideals meshed with some aspects of modern humanism.
