I'm a big fan of FPS's. That being said, i'm constantly disappointed by the standard melee/pistol/smg/AR/MG/RPG/superweapon blah that infects so many games. On the other side of the coin, I am also sick of the "misc realistic thing that shoots bullets with different stats" that infects many shooters also.

Please, describe your unique weapon that will convince me that all is not lost

Name of weapon
1) how is it used in gameplay?
2) how is it a thinking person's gun/mine/squid-a-pult?
3) what are it's downfalls?
4) what kind of game would it be used in.

An example

Rock
1)Smooshing faces
2)Weapon of last resort, you have run out of everything else.
3)There is a 50/50 chance you will succeed in smashing the NPC into grape-jelly oblivion. They could do the same to you. Also, it is a rock: the least elegant of all weapons.
4)Heart of Darkness: Joseph Conrad's Revenge

A solid continuous beam laser gun.

The actual fun would be from the game having an awesome physics system so you could just cut a home in half and watch it topple.

THIS IS WHY WE NEED NEW CONSOLES, TO CUT HOMES IN HALF WITH LASERS
Go wild. [http://www.tinyandbig.com/]

OT: I want a gun that's got a chamber like a revolver, but each bit holds the equivalent of a double barrel shotgun in it. It can also hold 50 rounds per chamber.

A gun that shoots a gun that shoots a chainsaw.

1). suprise attacks. shoot the gun; the gun it shoots out will fire the chainsaw when you tell it to. Good for around corner attacks.
2)requires you to plan before firing, more strategic.
3) no real close combat effectiveness
4) Duke Nukem sequel: good edition.

The expander.

Think the bubble shield from Halo, except you use it as ammo that penetrates your enemies and then expands inside them. Messily.

1) extreme ultra-violence
2) extremely effective against unarmoured enemies, but worthless against armour/shields
3) see above
4) I could see it in something like Gears of War, but it's more or less similar to the Torque Bow, so.

A grenade launcher that fires time-freezing bubbles, about 6' in radius.
Anything inside them is frozen for the duration of their existence (about ten seconds). Can be used as a shield, an incapacitator (freeze multiple enemies in place if it even touches them), a way to assassinate a single target (fire into the shield, aiming at a frozen enemy), or a way to completely destroy a group of enemies (you have sniper rifle and time grenade, and are sufficiently far away not to be noticed. Fire grenade, fire sniper rounds at enemies (into grenade) and watch them all collapse as soon as it depletes. Alternately, just hose a time grenade with bullets, then get behind cover.)

Bullpup assault rifle with an integrated shotgun.
If that's too boring, I had an idea for a weaponized cathode ray tube. Just saw off the end and let all the particles be shot at people. (I know it won't work, shaddup)

You have a gun that only fires high velocity candy. All your opponents are diabetics.
The "Manta Ray", a gun shaped like a manta ray that fires electrified stingers at opponents.
The "Bee Bee Gun", you know the Pain from MGS 3? Yeah his gun that fires hornets.

I always thought a "walking bomb" shotgun would be pretty cool. Primary fire does DOT and causes the target to explode violently on death (you don't want this to happen anywhere near you) and alt-fire knocks the target away to be used as a weapon against other enemies.

Grapple Shot

It would work pretty much like the Just Cause 2 grappling system, you fire it at objects in the environment which it is then attached to, with a strong rope connected to it. You can then either leave your end of the rope connected to yourself or connect it to something else. This could result in allowing yourself to move, being dragged by a moving object or pulling yourself up the rope to inaccessible areas, pulling enemies into danger, destroying the environment by using the kinetic energy of moving objects to pull structures apart, conversely supporting structures (or just holding objects up with a rope from the ceiling), manipulating the environment by jamming mechanical structures (think two cogs rotating in opposite directions, but with the rope attached to each one), setting up the rope for enemies to trip over, or get cut in half with if they are moving fast enough, and surely many more possibilities.

This could open up all sorts of puzzles and combat mechanics, and if this is the only weapon you have, might really inspire some careful strategy in a game.

A downside would be that it requires an ideal environment to really be effective as a weapon. If there are no moving elements of the environment, then you would be pretty much limited to dragging yourself towards objects or dragging things towards yourself.

Ok. People aren't thinking out of the box enough.

False Man
1) Clone of self that tries to surrender to opposing forces before exploding.
2) Psychological warfare.
3) Makes enemies gun down others because they think they are acting funny. Innocent people.
3) Asshole Bastard III: Ghost of OP.

This would be cool, but I think an entire physics engine would have to be devoted to it. I'd play it.

Wabbajack gun in a multiplayer game. Might turn your opponent into a duck, might make them eight feet tall and demonic.

I remember when i was a kid i used to draw little war designs.

One was a 50.cal silenced sniper mounted on top of a tank. In retrospect the silencer was kinda redundant.

The thermite patch. The new way to take out armoured vehicles. Attach one to the
hatch on a tank and let the fun begin.
