So I'm just browsing my usual tabs and I see a little banner thing for gameplay footage of Destiny and I thought "huh, haven't seen any footage of it yet" and took a look. Didn't take me more than 5 seconds to realize that it looks like someone just took Borderlands 2 and put HD graphics all over it. Am I the only person who noticed that? Like not even making a comparison between the two games I'm literally just seeing Borderlands 2 gameplay but with like a High Res pack. Your thoughts?

On a side note, captcha was "switch to time warner cable". someone is getting desperate lol

Certainly looks that way doesn't it. I think because it is bungie the multiplayer aspect will be MUCH better than borderlands, and the over all gun play will probably be more fun for most people and a little less rpgish, but for the most part it gives me a borderlands vibe, which I guess isn't a bad thing, because people loved borderlands and I thought the games had some pretty cool ideas.

I know Halo wasn't for everyone, but it was really the only games I ever bought with the main intention to play the multiplayer, so I think Destiny will probably be great, just not my thing and not for everyone.

lol at your captcha. :p

I don't want to be "that guy" because I've already commented on the video, but I swear that none of the Escapist staff sounded even remotely excited to me. They sounded nothing like how people normally sound when playing, say Borderlands 2.

I could be wrong of course, maybe everyone was super excited but remained subdued because they knew they were being recorded, as if they were in "review mode". Or maybe there's awesome vehicle sections much later in the game. Who knows? Just my observation.

In all fairness they were probably playing on easy. On the other hand, whenever I'm playing with a friend online, it's almost always a great time, like in any of the Saints Row games. Hell, I imagine that even if I were to play Halo 1 on split screen we'd still be laughing or commenting.

that may actually be the case, like if you've had hawaiian punch and love how it tastes but for some reason someone asked you to drink some off brand version of it

Destiny is Borderlands without anything that made Borderlands worth playing.

From what I saw there are some differences. The combat in Destiny compared to Borderlands looks more rigid. In Borderlands it was seems more fluid since everyone is moving constantly and there's always 5 different enemies coming towards you, while in Destiny it's pretty much Stop, Shoot, Move, Stop and so on. Or maybe that's just the people who are playing are really boring.

That sounds way better, to be honest.

Plus, it has armor, has better controls, better multiplayer, better graphics, etc. etc.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Borderlands 2, but this looks much, much better to me.

You know, while I can understand the comparison, I can't help but feel that it's really shallow. "Oh, it's got different classes. And look at all the guns. And it emphasizes co-operative multiplayer. It's like Borderlands."

Well, in that way, sure. But that barely scratches the surface on either game. Both have different tones, themes, and hell, gameplay whenever you get into nuance. So no. Destiny isn't just Borderlands with HD graphics. Destiny is it's own thing, just like Borderlands is.

And like SKBPinkie and Xdeser2, I have to say: While I kind of liked Borderlands, the humor wasn't always for me, the gunplay always felt a wee bit off, and even with the variety I wasn't taken with any of the guns in particular. Destiny looks better, in tone, gunplay, and setting. That's simply because Destiny looks more to my taste: Not because there's actually anything wrong with Borderlands.

And BL2 doesn't give me tunnelvision, like Destiny did to me during previews.

I instead prefer to think of Destiny as Borderlands sprayed in monotonous graybrown textures, and with all the humor extracted lest Bungie unintentionally makes the mood any lighter.

Destiny looks like a similar concept, just far more realized. Plus with space magic that is actually more then one power over and over again. (Yeah, I know it's more like 3 but still that's more variety.)

I was a big fan of Borderlands, though 2 kinda screwed the pooch on that one. (It starts good but ends weak, and after around 20 levels everything you meet is just a bullet sponge. And they only get spongier.)

I'm gonna be that guy and say that the title of the thread makes no sense.

Borderlands without the awful humour and good gunplay sounds good actually. Certainly looks better than Borderlands The 2K-wants-a-sequel-before-the-real-sequel.
Oh well, I played Borderlands 2 myself, and while I had fun with it, it's kinda strange to see people implictly suggesting that any co-op shooter is just cloning Borderlands and that there wouldn't be any opportunites to improve upon the formula... a lot.

Starting with the generic guns, for example, that feel the same after a while - because they are. Or the pretty repetitive gameplay. Or the weak AI. Or or or...

Ok how about this, Destiny is kinda look like Halo (graphic and abit of setting) but with a similar gameplay to Borderlands?

EDIT- Now I think about it, the very first trailer of Borderlands does bare more resemblance to Destiny.

Yeah, just checked some gameplay myself and it does look very simular.
I also just decided I really want a PS4 right now...

There's a certain level of similarity (FPSRPG, co-op, randomy loot (including elemental guns, which started to veer a little close to copying IMO), leveling, classes). The story's hard to judge because the Alpha doesn't let you get into much.

My main gripe is that the enemy variety is a little lacking. You fight 3 different enemy factions in the Alpha, but they all have identical units (A little rushing melee guy, basic grunts with guns, wizards, and a teleporting elite dude).

There's indications of more complexity, like all the faction stuff, the PvP option, and whatever the Intelligence/etc stats do, but its again not explained in the Alpha (possibly in the manual online wherever that was).

Being able to drop dynamically in and out of team play is pretty nice too.

Destiny is also definitely a MMORPG, whatever they want to try and spin it as. Though it does play with the formula somewhat.

This is how I describe it. Obviously that's not the end all and be all of it. But broadly yes. Also borderland mp was broken (and still is) on ps3, borderlans 2 works... barely. I couldn't play as Zero online because the lag was so bad in EVERY game online that it was impossible to snipe. (B4 any 1 mentions internet connection it is the only game that lags that badly and consistently I've owned) Not mention the horrible balancing meaning TVHM (new game plus) it became pretty much impossible offline because of how hard the enemies hit.
So yeah copy Borderlands 2 style of gameplay, I'll be intrested to see how good a fully functioning version of it works.

Destiny's biggest problem is there is no story in the alpha. Its like playing Halo 4 spartan ops if they cut out all the cgi videos. Very like that. Heres 1 map. Go this way. Now next mission go back to that same map and do it again only the opposite direction. There are only 2 different missions in the alpha, but the map in the alpha makes me think there will be at least 5 missions run on this map in the game.

While the map is pretty big and interesting. 2 hrs or so on it is more than enough to make it very familiar and boring. I really hope its like 1 map of 50 or so. Because if its 1 of 10 you'll have seen everything in a couple days easy.

And there really is no story at all here. You can find objects to fill in your Grimoire. But thats just short text descriptions. And not only do you have to find these hidden things to read the text, you cannot even read it in the game. You have to go to bungie's website and create a linked account.

All there is is generic armor and weapons. Do to the first person view you won't see most of your equipment most of the time anyway. And the weapons so far are VERY basic. Pistol, shotgun, assault riffle, riffle, sniper, and laser. There are a bunch of different models but they all looks the same. Don't expect any verity in them like in borderlands.

If you were one of those people who loved the halo multiplayer I guess you might like grinding on the crucible stuff. Personally I couldn't care less about pvp. But you HAVE to do it. The game has a bunch of different currencies, and 1 of them you get from doing the pvp. And most off the better items need multiple currencies, including the pvp, to buy.

They sell you a bunch of space ships but they apparently do nothing. Just alt skins for the dull loading screens.

Don't buy this expecting halo. This is a 3-6 player instanced first person mmo. Aside from the art and the pvp there is no halo here.

This was the one game I was waiting for this year after dark souls 2. Unless the beta is significantly better than the alpha I might just end up skipping this. But I'm not getting my hopes up.
