I haven't watched the gameplay footage much, but I can see it being a Serious Borderlands for Serious People. And theoretically I would be down for that, but I do find I have a problem with games made by companies who are deep into competitive multiplayer.

The problem is weapon balance... namely that it exists.

To me, the fun of a SP/Co-Op experience is the constant ramping up of your weapons, and frequently this leads to some seriously over-powered weapons with more than enough ammo to be fun and ridiculous... and enough super bad guys to make the weapon necessary.

But this only leads to crying in multi-player, so everything has to be balanced and IMO you end up with a bunch of bland under-powered shotguns and silly things like super-powerful headshot pistols, insta-kill stealth weapons, and the butt of a rifle being the most powerful weapon in the game because MELEE RULES! If it takes a bit of skill to use, expect it to be over-powered even though there's no logical reason why an arrow at 100 yards should be instantly lethal while a point blank shotgun blast isn't.

Borderlands with competent developers and the biggest budget for a videogame ever.

So yeah, HD. Maybe even 1080p.

That is the kind of vibe that I am always getting from the game. It just looks like Borderlands with a different art style and without the charm. If that is what $700 million can buy, I am disappointed.

I'm bummed this is multi-player. I'm mostly about single player games with great stories.

Also, I'm bummed this is multi-platform. It makes me think that even at 1/2 a billion invested into a multi-player game, it will be technically held back for those aging machines.

Yeah, just checked some gameplay myself and it does look very simular.
I also just decided I really want a PS4 right now...
It's getting there. Some new games are coming down to $40 rather than $60. You need PS+ ($50 a year) to play online, but get some very good free PS4 content with it. But I also own a Vita and PS3 and the same $50 a year buys a ton of content. Last few weeks, I added Fifa and NBA 2014 free. Sly Cooper Thieves in Time too!

It is hard to pay $40-60 for a PS4 game when I'm getting things like Battlefield 2 for $0.99 used for PS3 (Never had it for PS3, so it's new to me).

But playing it feels very luxurious. My old fat PS3 that I put a 500 GB drive into is very loud and clunky by comparison.

And there is a notable improvement in graphics. PS3 looks jaggy by comparison, and this is only the very beginning.

They're playing very behind-the-curtain with the story. Mostly blurbs on the grimoire cards you unlock on Bungies site by playing so far. You can go singleplayer for story missions (they may be a tad hard if you do them without some levelling).

Based on some of the stuff in the cards, and poking around the Tower City, there's definately an effort into world-building. Whether that comes around in story or kind of falls short Elder Scrolls style can't really be seen with the one mission in the alpha.

From what I saw there are some differences. The combat in Destiny compared to Borderlands looks more rigid. In Borderlands it was seems more fluid since everyone is moving constantly and there's always 5 different enemies coming towards you, while in Destiny it's pretty much Stop, Shoot, Move, Stop and so on. Or maybe that's just the people who are playing are really boring.
They may have set the levels up like that for purposes of demonstration, so they can gawp at the scenery and mess around with the physics engine without being interrupted.

Destiny is Borderlands without anything that made Borderlands worth playing.
The Humor.
The Story.
Everything.
Pretty much this.

I never bought borderlands one at first 'cos I was against the cell shading style, then I saw it on sale on steam (which is weird since sales never happen there) and thought "it's cheap enough, I'll have a go" (we have all done it) and ended up putting over 200+ hours into it and still not finished.

Loved the characters and ended up enjoying the style. Borderlands 2 massivly improved on the first, making Jack such a great character ... at first he was a minor annoyance and then with the whole kidnapping thing, he turned into a complete tool. Not played the DLC for it yet but I will do.

Destiny just looks like it took all the charm and style from it, put that dreaded realism in it's place.

I just can't get excited for this game, at all.

I made that observation as well, and I'm not entirely sure I like it. I haven't had much exposure besides the occasional glances, mostly due to the fact that I do not own nor plan to own an XBONE, so paying attention to a game I won't be getting for a console I won't be getting doesn't make sense. Therefore, I don't know if the story will be worth a damn. It could be, but I have serious reservations that they can pull that off in its current gameplay format. This weird MMO/RPG/FPS mashup, while it makes sense contextually, doesn't seem to benefit the work much.

However, there is still potential for it to be good. Like I said, the mashup does make sense contextually, and though it does seem a bit baffling as to how to implement it, if done right, its implementation could instead benefit the game greatly. The enemy factions appear to be various sci-fi tropes, which is not a bad thing; Halo itself was essentially constructed from various sci-fi tropes and references, and I thought Bungie did a fantastic job there. Though it does seem rather Borderlands-y, Borderlands is not a BAD thing to draw inspiration from to make everything fit together. After all, Borderlands and Borderlands 2 were both good games, and borrowing certain elements wouldn't hurt Destiny itself. My only complaint with Borderlands and its sequel is that sometimes they felt rather grindy, but it was so varied that it quickly overcame that vibe. Hopefully, Destiny stays varied and interesting as well so as to overcome this as well.

I'll keep an open mind about it. With a reported budget at $500 million (one poster in this thread puts it at $700 million)there's got to be some of that making it to the screen.

I have visions of playing with others who will be scratching their collective heads and wondering why I stink so badly (I do, and play all my single player campaigns on easy or with cheats or both!) and waiting for multi-gig updates every time I go to play the thing.

I do look forward to hearing more.

i kinda don't get the association that destiny = borderlands, i mean at first i thought the same but after seeing information over the ages, it never gave many anything to give any inclination that it was.

to be honest the best description is Halo + Diablo.

I can't link my vids here I don't think, but once you get some levels on you have a bit more freedom. Me and a guy went blasting through a ruined outpost on speeder bikes hopping on or off to shoot guys then getting right back on.

Even when you do run into stuff thats a significant threat, its ill advised to stop and hole up, as there's generally enough enemies to easily flank you out of any sort of cover shooting. The enemies are also fairly evasive, and will keep circling about to avoid being sniped off or grenaded.

I've played through Borderlands 1 and 2 in co-op and it was great fun. I played Destiny alpha over the weekend, and it was great fun.

There, I hope I helped :)

Yeah, the comparison is valid, but it's shallow as all hell. Sure they're similar in some ways. The way weapons are generated, the loot, etc. But that's really where it stops. It does both games a disservice by being so shallow.

I've been waiting for this game for a long time. Mostly because I think Bungie is one of the best developers out there. They're just fun. Everything from their games to their community pages and websites is just... fun. I really get the sense that they enjoy what they're doing, and I want to get in on that. I want to play their games.

Both Borderlands and Destiny have themes that they're going for. It's like chocolate and vanilla ice cream. People will have their own tastes. Personally I didn't care for the tone and comedy of Borderlands. It got old fast. Borderlands 2 was even worse with a bunch of lazy memes plastered everywhere. That and I think Anthony Burch isn't a great writer, putting it mildly. That's the problem with comedy. It's sink or swim. It can draw someone in completely, or it can turn them away.

For Destiny I'm interested in two things. 1) The way they combine FPS play with MMO components. I love running dungeons in MMO's but I hate that the best way to run them is with friends and people you know. Even if you end up having that perfect guild you end up waiting and dealing with other petty bullcrap. I don't have friends who enjoy MMO's and so never have anyone to play with. If Bungie can properly meld the MMO style where I can drop in and out of dungeon content and stand a chance of completing it with a bunch of random dudes, that's fantastic. It's exactly what I've been looking for. 2) Exploration. It seems very few games explore our own solar system in it's entirety. I want to go to the Moon, Venus, Mars and go on adventures there. That sounds really cool. It's keeping this local and familiar. It's our galaxy after all. That's something I can enjoy.

Those are the two things I'm interested in. Everything else will just be a cherry on top if it works. So far I've heard mostly good things. It just comes down to taste.

Yeah, considering
1. I hate Borderlands 1 because the graphic fidelity was so lacking that it literally *hurt* my eyes to play and I couldn't play for more then 10 minutes at a time. But loved Borderlands 2 because it looked like they actually tried with the graphics.

2. Both games are a run n gun, shoot n loot, blast n cast on an alien planet with an interesting back-story and a moderately beloved robotic side kick (as it stands). And I like that. And Peter Dinklage's voice.

So call me a fangirl but I'm getting it.

Plus I just like Bungie, they did good on Halo.

In the roughest estimate you could say that, but you get much closer considering it as a Halo gone MMO.
Because it is by those devs and the combat mechanics are one for one from Halo, except now you roam infinite monster spawn zones instead of a story campaign.

So I'm just browsing my usual tabs and I see a little banner thing for gameplay footage of Destiny and I thought "huh, haven't seen any footage of it yet" and took a look. Didn't take me more than 5 seconds to realize that it looks like someone just took Borderlands 2 and put HD graphics all over it. Am I the only person who noticed that? Like not even making a comparison between the two games I'm literally just seeing Borderlands 2 gameplay but with like a High Res pack. Your thoughts?

On a side note, captcha was "switch to time warner cable". someone is getting desperate lol
The more I read up on Destiny, the more it looks like a much, much better version of Defiance. Seriously, even the events in Destiny sound like the Arkfalls from Defiance, but Bungie will take care of its folks much better than Trion has been doing, of that I am sure.

I have some questions about Destiny. I haven't looked into it like.. at all since it's announcement. I didn't have too much interest in it, but my friends and I have decided to get PS4's pretty soon with Destiny so we can all have something to play together off the bat. Sounds okay to me, but I'd like to find out some more about it.

Is playing the game privately possible? I've heard about the "shared world" concept where you enter in with other people on the fly. But would it be possible to just play the game in your own private session with other friends? Or is this just not part of the vision for this game?

If the game is played on a persistent world, with people coming and going on a whim, is there any part of the game that is strictly instanced around your playergroup? Besides PvP. I'm trying to find info on this, but I haven't really found anything yet. If I were to guess.

Just how large is the game going to be? I'm guessing this one is difficult to answer. But from the sound of the posts here, it seems like there's not much content to see. And that's a bit worrying.

Are you and other players fighting accomplish the same quests? For example, if you have a quest to kill 10 dudes. Will arrive in to the quest area, and find other players killing the same dudes? And if so, does that mean that you have to sit around waiting for spawns because all the other players keep killing off all the dudes? If so, then that would be an ancient relic of MMO design.

Thanks ahead if anyone can answer these questions.

OT: I think the Borderlands vibe comes mostly from the weapons, and perhaps the ways each class functions. It's not a bad thing to lift inspiration from since I thought that was one of the coolest things Borderlands introduced.

The rest of the game sounds a lot more like Defiance... I'm still not completely sure how Destiny works. Since I might end up getting it, I'm really gonna need to look into it a lot more.

You know, while I can understand the comparison, I can't help but feel that it's really shallow. "Oh, it's got different classes. And look at all the guns. And it emphasizes co-operative multiplayer. It's like Borderlands."

Well, in that way, sure. But that barely scratches the surface on either game. Both have different tones, themes, and hell, gameplay whenever you get into nuance. So no. Destiny isn't just Borderlands with HD graphics. Destiny is it's own thing, just like Borderlands is.

And like SKBPinkie and Xdeser2, I have to say: While I kind of liked Borderlands, the humor wasn't always for me, the gunplay always felt a wee bit off, and even with the variety I wasn't taken with any of the guns in particular. Destiny looks better, in tone, gunplay, and setting. That's simply because Destiny looks more to my taste: Not because there's actually anything wrong with Borderlands.
I played the alpha and the potential kind of has me excited. As long as I have friends or people I can run into and start conversations with and make my character look badass(theres a ascended chick who with the right face/ hair looks like Ziggy Stardust!) So yeah I might actually get a ps4 for this game.

There are similarities, yes, but I fully welcome an open world shooter with realistic graphics and a more serious tone. I only recently got around to trying the alpha tonight and it took a physical effort to pull myself away from it. The caves, tunnels, and ruins in the open world just beg to be explored and I...WILL...DESTROY...THAT...DROPSHIP! The open world map has the same sense of sharing that I get from playing ESO - met some cool people who were a few levels higher than me who had no problem helping me through an ambush when I came upon a fight a bit too big for me. Just the idea that I can grab my speeder and accidentally travel a bit out of my comfort zone scratches a certain itch I haven't had since my days playing Everquest. I like what I've seen so far and cannot wait to see how this game develops.

I thought I was the only one that was thinking that. That would be a good thing I think. Won't have to deal with all that heavy handed humor and shit. I'm just confused as to what kind of game it is. Does it have a story mode, is it an MMO?
It has a story mode, then after you complete the story section, that area is free to explore, complete tasks in, face random challenges (think GW2-type events), and kill bosses for gear upgrades. It's kinda MMO-lite
