<spoiler=Long winded explanation>Hi there, I'm in need of your assistance!

About a month back I purchased the GOTY of Deus Ex through Steam since I felt it was something I had to play. Now, while I definitely could see why so many people hold the game at such high regard, the shooting and stealth mechanics just frustrate me (the lack of auto-save dosen't help either).

I really want to play through the game, even multiple times at that, but I feel I need some advice on how to go about playing without getting hindered too much by my frustrations. So I've come here to ask for your advice.

What are some things I need to know to play Deus Ex efficiently?

Thanks!

You could always make a combat character level in rifles and such. that way you can still go by without being seen and still kick ass if necessary.

Keep in mind that this game is an RPG, so you aren't immediately good at shooting things. With the proper training, though, you can get really good.

But I never really saw the appeal of shooting stuff in a game that has so much to offer for exploration. It was just so much more fun to play like a ninja.

A general tip is this. Explore every nook and cranny. This can help you find a lot of useful things, but more importantly, it can help you get extra nano-canisters, which are really important to building a powerful character.

Just keep in mind, whatever you do, don't take swimming. It's fairly useless.

And don't squander your multitools or lockpicks. Save the game before making an investment in case it wasn't worth it.

And try not to use your augmentations excessively. Energy can be hard to come by.

(also, I believe the game has a quick save function)

It does yes, there has been some frustrating random death though, were I forgot to quick save. But that's more my fault for being so used to auto save.

Also, the RPG and exploration parts is what I love. The reason I'm looking for advice is so that the combat sequences will go by as painless as possible.

Keep hold of the sniper rifle and assault rifle. Drop accuracy augs onto them. Level up your rifle skill. If you get the ballistic shield and anti-missile personal augs, install them, they will make you invincible. Be sneaky in the early parts of the game, because most enemies will die on a headshot, but the biggest hindrance to getting them is your gigantenormous reticule - crouching will help shrink it. Hack. Everything.

Take the GEP gun when paul offers you it. The crossbow is cool but useless. The GEP gun will let you handle droids. There are a lot of droids.

Internalise the phrase 'walk softly and carry a big stick' because it's always best if you can keep the fights small scale and under control, which requires a little stealth. Distance and line of sight mean more than noise level, but crouching makes you totally silent. Level up medicine but ONLY once (it doubles the effectiveness of your medkits which is invaluable.)

That should help. This is NOT the only way to play DX, but it is basically 'easy mode'. I went for full on pistol mastery, which worked fine until about 2/3 of the way through the game where EVERYONE stopped dropping pistol ammo.

The thing about deus ex is that if you don't like combat you don't really have to stand it, except for one or two encounters in the whole game you don't really have to fight anyone if you don't want to and you can beat the game just as well.

That said, what worked the most for me was leveling pistols and rifles. Crossbow w/tranq darts carries you through most of the game if you are patient enough to let the darts do their job and contrary to what seems to be popular belief, uses pistol skill, not low tech and for whatever can take darts easily like bots you can always dodge or use the rifles (sabot shotgun and 20mm ammo come to mind).
