dick move? well ok, i can understand looking at publicity might not be your favorite activity but isn't it blowing it out of proportion ? i mean they're not tearing your wallet from you while you're kicking and screaming...
its more that with any media you have paid for there is no real justification for further adverts, because surely the price of admission was enough. That is my take on it anyway
Yeah i understand that, i just don't get why people are this outraged over something that i'd personally consider a minor annoyance...

To each his own i guess, i still think this is a mountain out of a molehill kind of thing :)

Yes well me and the sexy librarian and sexy Russian are on 360, so its long loading screens for us!
I wonder if PS3's loading times are faster, what with the installing and whatnot. I should probably ask the Oblivion fanboy...

Blowing it out of proportion? I honestly don't see how I'm doing that. All I said was it was a bit of a dick move. That is all. It's not like I typed a rant screaming 'BURN THE HERITICS!!1!!! SQUEENIX FOCKING SUX!" Then you would have a valid complaint ;P

I just think it's a poor show to add these things in after it's been released. And no-where in the patch update did they say they were going to add these things in. Which either means they were already on the disc, or they're adding things without informing you.

360 here too! I usually take the time to go get a drink while I wait.

It's more the fear if this becomes accepted in games that we as consumers have already bought, that there will eventually reach a point when game will have 30 second "loading" screens which are nothing more than splash pages for advertising who knows what (worse case scenario).

It won't. Studies have already shown in-game ads to be ineffective. Quake Live has em and they actually look GOOD in-game, but they make little money from it. Who cares? If it doesn't look out of place then I don't see a problem.

That wasn't directed at you actually, more the "Fuck You Squeenix!" comments :)

Though i can understand if they decided to prolong the loading screens to put more ads (making it akin to TV i guess) now that'd be a real problem.

If games worked in a little (fairly inobtrusive) advertising, the developers (hopefully) get more money. This (in theory) means they can create more advanced, complex games at the same physical cost to the consumer, or games at the current level of technology for a lower cost. Once the next generation of consoles comes out, something like this will have to happen to prevent games getting prohibitively expensive.

Loading screens are unused time anyway, and Deus Ex is coated with billboards for fake products as it is. Use them for real advertising, balance that against cheaper DLC and/or cheaper Squeenix games, and everyone's happy!

Sadly, it's more likely that they'll just stick ads in and do nothing with regards to game price or development cycle.

Studies may have shown that but I doubt advertising companies are going to change. In situations like this I don't blame the game company for accepting the add money, I blame the company for thinking it's a worthwhile investment. Or perhaps more appropriately the advertising department/company for convincing the company that this is a worthwhile expenditure. From a 'consumer' perspective sometimes I just don't get it. The need for marketing is obvious but sometimes it seems like marketers live in their own little world. And unfortunately for us they have all the big corporations convinced that these sorts of things are a worthwhile investment.

I don't really see a problem with this, I am on the 360, and if they did add ads to that version also to the loading screens, why not, I mean they are about 10 to 15 second long loading times, so why not throw in something else to look at instead of me just turning to my laptop to go onto youtube or facebook.

Ahh that would be that patch then... Was wondering why DE was updating through Steam.

As other people have said, it's not really that big a deal. The loading screen already breaks the game flow so meh.

Now if only some fear mongering news organization could stir up some controversy along the lines of "Toyota endorses murder simulators!" The ads would then probably mysteriously go away. Fox News, will you save us?!

Pfffffffft. This is a non-issue.

Companies offered the game company big money to put in non-obtrusive ads, so they took them up on it, as any sane person would. Tell me with a straight face that if you made a game, you wouldn't stick a small ad in the loading screen for a million bucks.

Who cares? Seriously why is this a big deal? It's during a loading screen what else are you doing? Besides ignoring the loading screen and taking a sip of mountain dew.

Really get over it there's worse things they could do FAR worse things. Like make the loading screen a commercial where the volume is 6 times louder than the game. THEN you totally should be screaming bloody murder.

Considering the amount of loading screens in that game, that's a long time you're going to be staring at ads.
Did you install the game to the HDD? I don't remember it being that long. Though I tend to not notice those things unless they get really ridiculous (I think New Vegas is the only example I can think of).

I don't mind seeing tiny adverts on the loading screen.

I would only become upset if the advertisements somehow interfered with my gameplay.

For example, if I were forced to watch even a 10 second commercial before playing the game (or at any time during/in between gaming sessions) I would be very angry.

Also, in-game advertisements such as billboards are something that do not typically irk me. I would say that I actually like them if they fit the canon of the games artwork.

For example, if an in-game billboard (in Deus Ex) were to display some sort of medical facility, or perhaps an R&D laboratory, or even a real-life corporation that has (or could forseeably) put money into human enhancement of any form, I might actually find it immersive.

The key with in-game advertisements is fitting the canon, though.

However, If I were running through the streets of Detroit in Deus Ex and suddenly saw a gigantic advert for laundry detergent that I could buy at my grocery store, I would let out a resounding: "WTF?!"

Well, that's annoying.

"Hey, that game of ours has been met with a really good reception and is selling well. What should we do with it now?"
"I reckon we should use it to stick our dicks in our customer's faces."
"Brilliant!"

Not the biggest of deals, I know, but I would prefer that they not do it.
