Ok, I'm really looking forward to DXHR, but I'm curious- Do I have to get any of the previous installments, before HR? Are there any plot points, that are relevant to HR?

Well, it's a prequel so you shouldn't be too lost for plot. That said they're both great games (the first in particular) so they're worth playing, if not to get you in the Deus Ex mindset.

Probably not. I think Human Revolution takes place before the other games. Still, couldn't hurt.

We don't know all about what happens in Human Revolution, so plotwise, I cannot say for sure.
On the other hand, if you can push past the very dated graphics, the original Deus Ex is an incredibly solidly built game; probably the closest we will ever get to having a true "spy/agent" sort of game.

If you can find a copy, do play it.

I don't think so, because Human Revolution is a prequel.

You still can't go wrong with playing the original Deus Ex though, it's a great game. Invisible War is okay, but nothing like the first one.

Other than the first Deus Ex being widely regarded, by critics and gamers a like, as one of the best video games ever made, I don't think so. Also, it's like $2.99 on Steam

They will probably insert a bunch of easter eggs and references for people familiar with the story, but I would imagine it's pretty much stand alone. Since it is a prequel, we might meet some of the older soldiers that were present in the first game.

It's a prequel, so no.

But, anyone who's finished the first one will tell you it's one of the greatest games ever made.

The second one (Invisible War) was a piece of crap IMO.

The upcoming game takes place far earlier in the Deus Ex timeline than the original. So I doubt the original game will add something to the plot. Unless you are one of those people who determines the past out of the future!

Also, the hardest difficulty on DX:HR is going to be called Deus ex, if you played the first game, you'll understand why. That being said, highly recommend playing the first one.

At best, there might be a few shout-outs to subsequent Deus Ex characters and/or story elements (off the top of my head, the "Tong's Rescue"* pre-order mission they're giving via certain retailers) - however, as was said before, the original is well worth playing if you can get past the (by today's standards) dated graphics.

[sub]* - Supposing the Tong mentioned is actually Tracer Tong :p [/sub]

Does it work on Win7? I've had problems with Thief TDP, seeing as DX is from the same studio.

No.

Gameplay wise they're disappointing if you're experiencing them for the first time, and story wise they're irrelevant as HR is a prequel.

Nah.

You can just play through HR and you won't be totally lost or anything, though there will probably be references to things about to happen that you won't get.

I'd still recommend at least buying the first one on account of it actually being good and being fairly cheap at this point, though it's old enough that people may just not like it because it's old.

I have it working in Win7, but maybe it hits problems depending on what's going on. Working fine for me, and in much higher resolution than it ever supported before.

There is a good reason, but it has nothing to do with HR.

It's 'cause they're awesome.
