Just started playing it and... it's so on the nose! There just trying way to damn hard to be relevant to today world that they forget that the story take place in another world! And it's like everything that happen exist solely to be a reference to something in today news, I mean "hacktivist" urgg.
Yes. You can't really reference the modern day events because they get dated really really fast. That's bad writing.
You can't reference modern day events because they get dated? Thats stupid everything gets dated regardless what you write and do and there are a lot of fiction that reference modern day events, its called satire.
Not to mention the fact that a lot of the "modern day events" these posters are talking about have been happening for decades in one form or another.

Also, while the Deus Ex series is heavily sci-fi, the resonance borrowed from real world events is what's always kept things grounded and believable. Something that's especially important when attempting to believably execute themes of political intrigue, eugenics, and many of the series' other social commentaries.

Things can get dated in different way, some stuff become very important over time, other stuff peter out quickly and become unimportant after even a few years (ie the time it takes for a game to go from concept board to launch). Two things that seems equally important today will not necessarily be as important in retrospective.

If Donald Trump doesn't get elected, his impact on politic will probably be very small, so making a game with lots of obvious direct reference to him today when the game will only come out in 2 year is probably not a smart move.

Fine but saying that having modern things in fiction is bad writing is beyond stupid, sure there are somethings that would harshly date things but going to the extreme is just retarded

People complaining about references to real-world politics in this fictional science fiction game need to look up what the word 'allegory' means. And for that matter, look up the use of allegory in speculative fiction in general.

I'm enjoying the game so far. I set myself a challenge of doing a non-lethal playthrough on Give Me Deus Ex difficulty with the caveat that I only have lethal weapons, so I have to go live if I get caught. It's been sloppy, but I have managed to pacifist run most places simply because I tend not to survive to long if I do get caught. Though thanks to an early encounter with an anti-aug gang in a book shop, I won't be getting the pacifist achievement this playthrough, I tell ye that.
