I recently reinstalled Deus Ex on my computer and gave it a whirl last night... and didn't end up getting to bed until 3 AM.

Can't believe that game is 10 years old now. Seriously ahead of its time. Like, if it had better graphics and was released today it would still get rave reviews everywhere. So many different ways to approach each situation, so many emergent gameplay strategies... like, wow. Every game developer today should be forced to play Deus Ex before making anything.

The only reply I can think to this is: yes it is a great game and has aged well...like a fine wine.

Discussion?

And I also still love Deus Ex. I never care about how old they might seem now; graphics aren't everything.

Anyone who's played the first Operation: Flashpoint and loved it will certainly agree with that.

Indeed, the game was far before it's time. A sterling example to current developers.

Has anyone ever said that it HASN'T aged well?

Last time I checked it was the perfect game.

One of the few games that is still playable despite its antique graphics. It is a moment of genius, nothing less.

to be honest I preferred the sequel. Yes it is really dumbed down by comparison, but as a child I was frustrated by Deus Ex as whenever I tried to choose things which suited my tastes it seemed to be punishing me (IE the crossbow, I remember running after a screaming enemy with a necklace of darts in his neck who refused to go down).

story was fun.

Actually, it still DOES get rave reviews everywhere. Deus Ex is like the Psychonauts of FPS - it used to be that diamond in the rough, but its popularity has grown with time and silently become a very community-spread, well respected and thoroughly admired game.

Deus Ex is probably my second-favourite game of all time, after the Mass Effect and SW:KotOR games. I don't even care if the graphics look antiquated; the game is still God's gift to gamers.

Too bad that the sequel was mostly shit.

I wish they would release this on XBLA....I loved the 1st mission and the way you had so much freedom to complete what you had to do

loved this game since it was recommended to me by a very wise shop assistant years ago
one of my favourites and all the most recent games should turn to it for guidance

A similar game that has aged very well is System Shock 2 -- which blows Bioshock right out of the water (ayuk ayuk). Do-whatever-you-fucking-want-to-get-the-job-done (TM) FPSes of yesteryear are how games are supposed to be.

Ah Deus Ex. You marvellous, wonderful piece of gaming excellence. Here's hoping that Deus Ex 3 will be able to stand beside it's predecessor.

One of the blokes working on DX3 has been quoted saying that DX1 was "slow". Plus it's going to have cover-based stealth. Which just.. yeah, my hopes are low.

If you want to replay Deus Ex 1 there are plenty of polish mods out there [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex_mods#Full-game_modifications] that make the textures prettier and the game easier on the eyes. It's still a classic, only games that old I still replay are Deus Ex and Planescape: Torment.

I think Deus Ex is a perfect example of the transcendency of story. Content really can make or break a game.

That, and some pretty fun customization options. Though the surgery to add those augs would likely have hurt at least a little bit =)

Actually, I've found that people that didn't play it within a few years of its release tend to have a bit of a difficult time getting into it. The technology hasn't aged well - it doesn't play nicely with multi-core CPUs, which are of course standard by now, and not everyone has the technical knowledge to get around that easily. Additionally, nobody can defend the animation in that game.

That said, it is a great game that I hope to beat someday. It gets really slow around the middle, though, so I've never gotten past Hong Kong.

I'm very surprised no-one mentions starcraft for a game that you played 10 years ago but when you get it out again it still rocks. :)

Deus Ex was pretty damn good though.
On a slightly off topic note, i feel the same way about freelancer, anyone ever play that?

I can defend it by reminding you it was made using the first iteration of the Unreal Engine, which didn't support all the fancy animated crap you see in games today.
