In case you didn't realise there is a sale on steam to mark the 10th birthday of Deus ex.
I know nothing about this series, however i couldn't miss an oppurtunity to play a game that has been rated soo highly in "best game ever" lists.

I bought both games for £2.98 which i thought was a great price!

ps is there an order to play the games in? Im guessing it goes DE GOTY and then invisible war? cheers

Invisible War is the sequel, yes. So... the Number Two! The.. follow up. The.. ugly, fat, misbehaving stepchild, actually.

Everyone absolutely hated Invisible War, which is quite funny as it's still better than alot of the generic piss floating around the industry today.
I will give it to them that yes it wasn't as good as the first, but there were problems to solve, there were rpg elements, the characters were quite good as were the sidequests and the story I think did a great job of continuing the story of the Dentons.
Regardless, for the price you got them, both games are worth a playthrough at least once.

I've actually been looking at this game... I want it a lot... I'm not saying that anyone has to buy it for me as a Steam gift, but...

Also, since Deus Ex 3 is coming out soon, will you need to play the second one to understand the story or will it be something completely new?

The third game will be a prequel to all the Deus Ex games before it. So, no.

I've been wanting to ask: is it worth buying the second game?
I have the first one already.

If you liked the first one, £1.49 is a small price to pay for what could be a great follow up, or a dissapointing experience. its up to you whether or not to take that gamble

To be fair; it's not THAT bad.

I know that the first one was much more amazing overall; but that doesn't make the second one bad.

I mean, look at newer games that people say are amazingly good. Halo 3, Fallout 3, Modern Warfare 2. They're all worse than their prequels.

I agree. However, I am also an incurable fangirl and have a reputation to live up to. Deus Ex is one of my most favorite games (from the story, to the characters, to the gameplay) and in my own personal, fangirly opinion, Invisible War was.. well.. not able to live up to the original.

I purchased those too because just about a month ago steam had a sale where it was both games for $5. I just finished Deus Ex for the first time, and moved on to Invisible War.
What a great game Deus Ex is.

Speaking as a non-fanboy of the series, I can say that it is worth getting for such a low price if there are some annoyances you are willing to put up with.
For example, the loading times...dear lord...
My current PC takes almost 20 seconds to load a level, and there are A LOT of level transitions. Really odd considering Crysis takes about as much time to load, and Metro 2033 loads damn near instantly.
And it is a very stripped down version of the first game. That doesn't make it a bad game though, just a really simplistic take on Deus Ex.

Steam still hates me then. I bought Deus Ex about three weeks ago.

Every game with the exception of Fallout 3 which I have purchased on Steam has been in a half price deal mere weeks after I have bought it.

If Deus Ex wasn't the first game and instead it was Invisible War, it would still be heralded as an awesome game.

Oh pish posh (goddamn I love that saying) Invisible War is a great game. It only looks bad next to Deux Ex, but really, what doesn't?

Not disagreeing with you. IW was, in comparison, horrible; but then again most games are in Deus Ex.

Frankly; I only bought IW recently enough, due to the fact that I ran away when a sequel came out to my favourite game EVER.

I didn't expect it to live up to Deus Ex. It was just physcially impossible.

That, dear Sir, is the whole point.

You've won hero points for me. Not that that counts for anything to the general populace. But still.

It was something of a sloppily coded game and is a fine example of what issues can be caused by catering too much to consoles - the small areas and muddy textures are a result of the original Xbox's limitations. Luckily some dedicated chaps have put together a lovely high-res pack so the game looks great even if it's still plagued by lousy load times and tiny areas.

My biggest complaint, really, is the universal ammo. Neat idea conceptually but in game it just results in me being boring and utilizing my pistol/SMG for the entire game because using anything more powerful eats up ammo like crazy and I can pimp the basic weapons out pretty wickedly.

On the other hand, DX2 did melee a lot better than DX1. DX2's baton is a massive improvement over the shitty baton in DX1 and high strength/speed augs make you so superhuman that if you arm yourself with a Katana you could outdo most anime swordsmen in the realm of "turn human beings to sushi before they can blink."

The original was a great game. Never played the sequel.

Feels dated playing it though. Especially shooting on the first level. Without levels in pistol skill, bullets don't go anywhere near where you pointed them.

The story remains great. I'd love to see a fan remake using a modern engine.

Heh, I'm going the "stealth hacker" route and barely use guns, but the ammo thing is silly and I'm glad they've said they're ditching that for Human Evolution.
As for melee, who needs a baton when you've got a dragon tooth sword. :)
But yeah, it is vastly improved in IW. I remember seeing a friend playing with the strength mod and just flinging corpses into enemies to make more corpses to fling...good stuff.

Good to know about the high-res pack, I'll be sure to check that out.
