if the COD engine is a Porsche...then does that make Halo's and Frostbite and fucking cruise ships? and the source engine a classic hot rod with space flight capabilities?

Time for a bunch of morons to come on and hate CoD because it's CoD.
Let me fix that for you.

Time for a bunch of reasonable people to come on and hate CoD because it's bland, boring, un-innovative, contains unlikeable characters, has terrible AI by today's standards, looks the same as all the previous games, and is ran by the only game developers more evil than EA who actually TRY to make a good game with exception to sports titles.
There you go. All better.
I'm assuming that the millions of sales result from that then?
people went to see shit movies like transformers and avatar didnt they?
the masses will buy anything if its popular.
Who are you to tell people what's good and what's bad? If people went to see the latest Transformers movie and didn't like it, then they learned that they will not like it, no matter how popular it is, and the same goes with Avatar (except I liked Avatar). Just because you believe your opinion is magically better than other people's doesn't mean that they're wrong and you're right, it means that you need to go back to pre-school and learn to respect other people's opinions.
Hold on i hear the waaaaaahbulance outside.
And there goes your argument.

"It's pretty freaking clean, man. Everything else is f***ing spaghetti, man! They just don't know all the work we put into making these 5 new damn weapons, man!! We'll add a whole minute to the cutscene of every big city in the world being blown to pieces for every time you prove you don't know, MAN!!! THIS THING IS A PORCHE!!!!!"
Does anyone else envision this Glen guy saying that?

An engine that is easy to work with means shorter iteration time, meaning that they can essentially refine the game more times. The "you don't know" comment may be overemotional or perfectly justified (which I don't think any of us has enough knowledge to judge properly). But when it comes down to it the game developers have a pretty good idea of what they are working on, what they have put into the game and they see all the small details users miss. A game is built on a lot more than the engine and so it may well be that you have not yet seen the engine's full potential or flexibility.

I mostly see bashing on specific features of the game, that which makes the game to the average user. This might say little about the true potentials of the core engine, because what you see is mostly scripting built on top of the engine and how you use it. What you really want to change then is the game's design (and perhaps market), not necessarily the engine that keeps it running.

Here comes the COD hate train.

Oh look, some one does not like some one else's factual opinion, lets ***** about it.
Enlighten me. Please do. Enlighten me as to how some kid with an irrational hatred for COD who has never touched a video game engine in his entire fucking life can know which one is easier to work with.
Moreover, how does a kid that begins yelling and foaming in the mouth whenever somebody criticizes CoD know whether or not that person has worked with a video game engine? It's a known fact that the Frostbite 2 engine is capable of far more than whatever they're using with CoD games, though I get annoyed with people constantly praising it.

Calm the hell down.

So, everything is CODs fault because people buy it. Right.

Then its also Transformers fault blockbusters are all explosion fests. Its Mercedes fault cars dont have a blowjob dispenser yet. Do I have to continue? I would say your argument is ridiculous, but you dont have one.

Im to tired to bother with this now. Grow the fuck up, maybe slap yourself a few times to pull yourself away from this fairy world you live in, then think about this again.
I'm going to assume you didn't actually read my post, as people buying it has little to do with my overarching point, which is that the developers are not pushing the franchise any further, thus stagnating it. It still sells, but it's just coasting on brand power. There is no legitimate reason for the total lack of effort in the franchise.

The rest of your post just concludes that you're an irate CoD fanboy with no connection to the real world, and cannot string together even a reasonable response. Well done, I'm sure your parents are proud.

I think this article is very pertinent to the most of "discussion" exhibited in this thread:http://www.destructoid.com/ten-golden-rules-of-videogame-fanboyism-83502.phtml

lol, basically what this guy meant was...

"Heh, we don't NEED to update anything for these people to buy millions of copies of the game!"

"New engine? Why waste that money when we could just design a new skin for an old gun, and let the fans defend us!"

Seriously, I enjoyed CoD4's gameplay, but seriously? To try and act like your outdated engine is worth 60 dollars is ridiculous. Especially when said old game engine is still not perfect.

Who are these people saying the engine Call of Duty runs on is the problem.

The engine that boring, boring game runs on is just fine. It's a perfect simulator of hiding behind walls and running away from grenades. Unless "fun" is the thing you added to your engine, nobody's going to care.

Except for all of the people who already care, obviously.

Inb4 obligatory CoD hate. Time to live up to my title!

OT: I agree that many people see Modern Warfare 3 and say it looks the exact same to MW2. But most of them dont think about all the little changes to how the game feels and sounds, they just see the graphics and say that its the same game because of it.

Must say that the "They just dont know" bit sounds like he's the character in a monster movie who goes to the police about the monster. I also read that bit in a very melancholy and weepy voice in my head.
Uhm...is there something wrong with what MW2 looked like? Oh? What's that? Even if we're releasing three installments in a row on the same exact system the graphics have to be increasingly better each time? Ah, good to point out.

To be less sarcastic (slightly), it really doesn't matter if the graphics get a million times better in MW3 than from MW2. I'm sure as hell not going to stop and notice that now I can see the nose hairs of my target in the sniper scope, I'm going to be too busy looking for that little squiggle of motion coming out of the bush in a dusty wartorn-hell hole that the level selector picked, where I start shooting, praying I hit a guy on the other team instead of my team-mate because the radar's off and I didn't bother to check my target first, then everything is washed out by a couple dozen muzzle-flashes from my rifle and I can't see sh*t anyways.

Not to say graphics don't matter, but I'm pretty sure we've already reached the point when better graphics aren't what's making the games better. It's better story, better level layouts, better characters, better development, more guns that would make the most liberal democrat drool with envy, and just straight up fun as hell.

In short, IW is making sure that MW3 is prettier? Cool. Do I care? Only if they sacrifice time or money in other areas of the game to fix something that wasn't really broken in the first place. Everything in the settings are going to be covered in six layers of dust and debris and look like dirt anyways, why need better graphics just to display yet another battlefield somewhere in Asscrackistan?

He went on to add that anyone who doesn't see the difference between Modern Warfare 3's and its predecessor has "no idea." "There is so much that we've added, so when someone says 'cut and paste', I don't even want to talk to them because they don't know," he said. "They just don't know."
Maybe if they spent that time on innovating the gameplay, people might actually lay off.

Well,to me,Activision is the one at fault here. They're the ones giving the one game every two year order.Unless they want to pay for a newer engine or revamped an older one,it would take longer than two years, and Activision would have to start sending their corporate ninjas to kidnap the their loved ones asking them politely to work faster.

Rehashing old things will only work up until a point, although, considering how much people are gobbling up old rehashed stuff at yearly intervals,it may still work for years.
With all the games they've been pumping out,why oh why don't they have a team to make a proprietary engine? It takes a long time, but at least you wouldn't have to pay franchise for the old engine. It takes a while, but you can make a good one that can last a decade instead of jury rigging over and over again.

So its like a Porsche? A car that has a lot of far better competetion. Hmm bad comparison.

This just sounds like them justifying the game similarity to last years game. And the one before that. And before that..

Equally I'm sure it'll do great and loads of people will buy and enjoy it. I'm not one to troll so I plan to get the game when its cheap, play the campaign, which I'm sure will be awesome and then trade it in. November is a busy gaming month regardless!

wow, it sounds like they think they do the best game ever made in history of gaming. i cant say that the engine looks terrible but i cant say its a porsche either. all they really do is upgrading it but thats pretty much it. so i cant agree with his comments that people have no idea. if we have no idea, then how come we claim it looks the same?
unreal engine at least you can see a difference if some one took their time and did something with it. is also my favorite engine followed by the source engine.
some still claim that the source engine is old but i think it still looks amazing and detailed and most of all, is not a hard ware eater as most others are.

This thread is heavy on the CoD bashing. Hectic!
So first up, I'm a big Call of Duty fan. I have bought and enjoyed all the IW iterations of the franchise (I especially liked the multiplayer component) so I still am very much looking forward to MW3 despite all the negative malarkey. Yes I do realize that almost half of IW have moved on out of disgust with Activision but I'm still excited about the game itself.

I can see why some of you say that they should write an all-new engine for graphics and newer physics and other shiny stuff, but in the end CoD is all about smooth, fluid, fast gameplay. If a new engine helps with this then that's awesome. Thing is, a new engine needs a lot of development time just to get to the same level of usefulness as the current engine and then a lot more time to add new features and iron out bugs. Also a new engine doesn't necessarily mean a better game (See UT3, FarCry 2 and Crysis 2. I might add BF3 to this list, but we shall see :p).

My point is just let CoD be CoD. If MW3 is as bad as you all say then don't buy it. Maybe then we can find a successor shooter, eh? Although, I'm not sure how you can all bash a game that hasn't been released yet :|
