I don't think games "sacrifice" single player content for multiplayer, they are rather neglecting it in favor of multiplayer because multiplayer, especially for consoles, has sold extremely well the last few years.
I would like to see game developers putting focus back on the single player story, and get back some of the great co-op possibilities that we had not too long ago. Like for example how all Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six games could be played trough completely on co-op mode. If there are generic soldiers or constant companions, there should be co-op for it.
I do also wish games like the Battlefield series would stop dicking around with singleplayer, that they are not very good at (at least I'm not impressed yet) and got their focus back on 64-player multi on large juicy maps! And a prone button, please god give us a prone button for the next BF...

Everyone knows that Modern Warfare 2 was a game built for the multiplayer. I did think that single player was awesome personaly, but the multiplayer is where the real meat of the game is, and look at how wll it sold. Is it wrong for people to prefer to play multiplayer over single player? Of course it's not, it's just personal opinion. If game deveopers want to maximise on profits by selling towards the largest audience, who are we to complain? Just play a different game if it sickens you so much.
I totally agree that people should be allowed to enjoy multiplayer games as much as they wish. I too enjoy multiplayer quite a lot and spend tons more time in multiplayer and co-op modes than I do in single player, because I like being social with my friends also when I game.
I don't really see the meaty part of MW2s multiplayer. The upgrade system was pretty much an exact replica of CoD4's, new weapons and stuff added but that is a minimum when it comes to new releases. The maps are all quite lazy, some are even just "out takes" from single player maps. What MW2 multi does have is a great variety of game modes, something you rarely see in games any more. It's sad then that they made an arena style game and not a game more similar to the good gold Battlefield games or Project Reality that I love so much. I'm not a console gamer, and MW2 is a console game. Perhaps that is why it didn't appeal to me all that much.
Single player is why I bought MW2. I loved CoD4's single player story, I adored Gaz and Price. MW2 felt like a massive letdown for me, mainly due to their going from a covert war thing and a conflict in the middle east (all things that could indeed happen in real life!) to their very farfetched and dull Russian invasion of USA. That ruined it for me. I litterally wen't "oh no" when the plot initiated the Russian invasion, as if the favela mission hadn't caused me enough pain.

Two, Portal was a 3 hour game that focused around puzzle platforming. Mind telling me how you can make a multiplayer based around Puzzle Platforming fun? It was a small thing Valve liked and put into the Orange Box that ended up becoming a prized gem. I doubt they predicting that it would be this popular.
Imagine a bunch of people running around a map littered with fall pits and other nasty things like walls closing in on eachother. All equiped with the portal gun. Put portals in the roof above the pit and another portal under your enemy's feet! =D Well, I think that could actually be fun, at least with friends =3.
