DeviantArt is pretty good. Sure there's a lot of mediocrity in alot of the submissions, but that's no different from youtube or any other media sharing site. Someone compared the community to youtube though and I disagree; I havn't seen even a one-hundredth of the amount of trolling that goes on within youtube.

It is hard to get yourself into the more social side of it, but as a library of creative media it's unmatched. They must have at least 12 million deviations up by now.

But overall, it's about what you're there for, I've been there for 5 years now and sure it's a little slanted in favour of the cash-in 'Hi I draw cute wolves or anime you like, ain't that great!' artists.

But the occasional Original Character artist breaks through and their stuff is usually of high quality.

To think of three off the top of my head.

Delya,
Endling and
JollyJack.
thats really cool. I love the octopus king!
Thank you, I create to impress.

While there may be alot of bad art in Deviantart, it's also one of the few sites where you get something as awesome as this:

DeviantArt is host to many things, some innocent some not, some dark some not, but mainly it has a LOT of talented artists.

So anyone use Deveiant art?
I do, though I haven't uploaded anything.

whats it like? whats the comunity like?
The community is like... most people there aren't there to improve, but to be praised.

is there actually good artwork there?
Well, yes, but not much... and for a site called "deviant art", most of the art isn't that deviant. And the one that is... well, it's usually tied to some kind of fetish.
Thanks for the advice

I like to draw so I thourght it might be a way to get feedback, though I dont do stuff that looks like manga/anime (I dont particually care for that stuff...mabye no because its bad, most of the time, because its just so annoyingly popular) Though I assume anyone actually looking at your stuff is hot or miss especially if its not manga looking

When the Search Engine works it's great. The community is friendly, though some are really stuck up and quite a bit of the artwork on their is fantastic.

My main complaint however is some of the artwork is scarring. When searching for Digimon, I found so-much-foot-fetish-stuff it was unreal. Also how some people love to ship two characters together (Takato and Henry are not together! Neither is Ash and Tai! Pikachu and Chiaotsu? Now you're taking the piss). Also, the other day I went on it and on the front page quite alot were hidden (I keep mature filter ON for personal safety) and only one that wasn't blocked had colour, so, out of curiosity, I hit it to see a flirtatious Roxas serving an embarrassed Naminé pancakes wearing nothing but an apron to hide his shame. That image wouldn't leave my head for quite a while.

Calumon: It's nice. They all know I like cake! :3

Yeah, it's pretty good.

There are some really good people doing really good stuff. A lot of professional illustrators and photographers use the site to store their portfolios.

However, there are also a lot of talentless amateur hacks on there (Eg. Me!) cluttering it up with their crap.

Lastly, for every good or interesting artist there are ten rabid fans busily posting detailed drawings of their favourite anime-related sexual fantasies.

So yeah. Go ahead and check it out, but be prepared to confront an excellent example of the good ol' "90% of everything is crap" rule.

I was there for about two years. Had a nice time, and it seemed like the best comunity on the internet...
Course, I've seen better since, and I became I real lazy son of a *****, so I've kind of just distanced myself over the past... 6 months? Or was it a year...
I'm trying to get back into it now, though. I've still got friends about there, and I'd like to not keep them on tenderhooks.
(P.S. I am actualy still on there, under the same username as here, in fact. You can look, but... Well, I haven't done much of merit. I wrote a lot, but most of it was crap, so I deleated all my works, and then... Never got round to making new ones. Shame.)

Yeah I like it. I write quite a bit so it is good to get feedback. So it is a nice stepping stone with a fairly friendly community.

My activity depends on how active I am with my writing (and if I can post it there).

So yeah check it out I do love to get feed back.

That was single-handedly the funniest thing I have seen all year. Thank you so much, you utter legend.

OT: Once you can get past all the weird fetish material [unless that's what you're looking for], and the awful stuff that somehow gains approval from the rest of the community, you can find some brilliant stuff. You either need to look for a while, or know where to look.

I've been there for about a year and I thought the community was pretty good. Admittedly I haven't made any friends on the site, but still.

You could honestly do a lot worse. Like SheezyArt. That place is just... no.

I joined DA a bit over a year ago hoping that I could learn something during my stay, though it's been difficult generating enough attention that somebody might provide even a brief critique of my work (usually composition issues). I typically end up falling back on the same people from my contacts list if I'm not sure how to correct a piece, most of which aren't exceptionally experienced.

While the community may yet surprise me, I'm seeking an alternative. Recommendations are welcome. :D

Yeah I agree I've been a member for about 2 years and from what I've have seen the community is much more geared to help artists improve than deviant arts. Also the quality of the artwork is usually a pretty high standard and if your just starting out create a sketchbook and people should give you advice on how to improve pretty quickly.
