I don't watch the show, though I've heard of it. Sounds vaguely interesting, but I'm not sure I'll ever watch it.

I think the strongest opinion I have of the show is utter loathing for those new season advertisements, involving some lame puns and the creepiest baby ever photographed.

I stopped watching television so I don't know too much about the show. If you like it that's what is important. Well that and if the sponsors like it and will pay for another season, that's important too.

I can't watch Dexter.

He reminds me way too much of myself, except with homicidal tendencies.

I bought the first season on DVD last week-end after hearing a lot of good things about it, and it completely lives up to my expectations.

I watched Season 1. One one hand, the premise is awesome, the main villain is great and the murders (both by the protagonist and the villain) are interesting. Generally, the show started out strong and I didn't want to miss a single episode.

However, then it devolved into a lot of screwing around, backstories for secondary characters, interpersonal relationships and tensions between said secondary characters, etc. Basically, the show started being about EVERYTHING ELSE except the two dueling serial killers.

I came back for the last few episodes where they got back to the actual show and realized that nothing actually relevant happened in the previous 5-10 episodes that I missed. I was both horrified and pleasantly suprised and then sat down to see how it ends. Basically, a great show with a mid-season cockup that's best skipped and forgotten.

I've watched it and for the life of me can not see why this is so damned popular. If theres one thing that gets me about the shows premise is this: the step father of a psychopath, who served as a cop, tells his woefully sick stepson to kill people who have it coming?
No. I know some shows expect you to hold some measure of disbelief but thats just ridiculous.

Dexter. Well shot, well acted but ultimately stupid. thats my opinion anyways

Other shows have done the same...ask you to be sympathetic for a bad guy. FX "The Shield"...HBO "The Sopranos"...

And not every cop out there is a bastion of good...if that were the case, there would be no reason for the creation of Internal Affairs to investigate crooked cops [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_affairs_(law_enforcement)]...

Everyone I know hates the show, I liked the first two seasons, the third was ok, even though the 4th isn't out the ads are everywhere I go and I think they are pretty stupid. "Hey I have a killer dad." Great pun now die in a ditch somewhere.

did they start the new season yet?? better yet, is season 3 out on DVD? the books/show are AWESOME!

It's also about the only reason I'm going to see that movie as the end of the summer 'gamer' doesn't look bad, but M.C. Hall is in it so I'm pumped :D

ALSO epic plot twists are epic.
Yes! Thats exactly whats been on my mind. Im not that interested in the movie itself, but Michael C. Hall is my favorite actor, and he looks like hes going to be amazing in that movie, hes one of the only reasons im seing it.

I think the idea was that he had a lust for taking life anyway, due to his horrific childhood experiences. At the same time, his step-dad the cop was growing increasingly frustrated with bad guys getting away because of this or that and losing faith in the justice system in general.

He thinks he can direct Dexters grotesque passion into something for good, but on discovering the realities of what he has helped to create he becomes overwhelmed by guilt, disgust and eventually commits suicide.

This is what I have gathered from the TV series, but I haven't read the books so maybe someone else can be a bit more specific, but it all seemed misguided but not totally out of the realm of possibility to me.

I love Dexter, though I haven't seen the third season yet. Everyone I've talked to about it has been hooked.

I've read the books and I love them, but I don't really watch the show. The last book I read was Dearly Devoted Dexter, and it's awesome. If you like the show, check the books out, the series is based on them.

I love the show. I saw a couple episodes, went out the next day and bought season 1 and 2 on DVD and loved them both. I saw a bit of Season 3 and then forgot to watch it so I can't really say anything about it.
