I really don't understand the hate at the Auction House in Diablo 3. Maybe it's because I didn't bother to read to much about it, but whatever. Just a question out of curiosity.

It's less hate at the Auction House itself and more hate at the fact that you are required to have an always-on internet connection in order to play.

...I think maybe becuase it forces an always on connection....

Myself I think it's painting a giant target on the game and will cause a shitstorm soon after release

Others are a little pissed that credit card kids will be awesome from the get go with a rubber-stamped OK from Blizzard

It's bad from a competitive pov.
Nolonger the best man wins, but the the guy who wasted the most money on virtual gear.

I think people are just scared about the whole EPEEN thing. Bringing in easy mode "epicz" is a hard thing to accept for players when they have lived in a world of "50 hour" grinds to get a particular item.

I'm planning to play the game with friends so I'm not planning to use it anyways =)

To be fair though, Diablo doesn't really have all that much of a competitive scene. Nothing like starcraft or WoW.

Yes I suppose it's not such a huge deal. It's lame, but not terrible.
Actually aslong as this crap stays confined only to D3, I'm fine.

Diablo was NEVER about competitive play. And the market would have existed.
Diablo 2 wasn't designed with competitive play as the focus, but that's what it became for many people once they became bored with grinding. Why do you think character rushes started?
If they were just playing PvM (or PvE now, since the WoW-crowd loves fucking with old lingo) why would they skip the whole game? What's the point of wanting to play the game, but then skipping over the "game" part?

Simple: They weren't playing PvM. They skipped it because they needed the levels for PvP.

Further, anyone remotely familiar with D2's (stupid, but active) pvp scene knew this.
"Perfect" PvP items drove the market. The PvP Runewords (sets of runes and items) were easily the most duped items in the game; far moreso than the old-SoJ even. A deluge of Call to Arms, Enigmas, Infinity, Breath of the Dying, flooded the online markets. Initially as account phishing scams, but later as more "legitimate" sales for real money.

Blizzard knew about this. (A trained seal using Google could slap it together in about 5 minutes of searching.) People worrying about "Money-buying-power" should be concerned. It means that if you're doing PvP, it's entirely probable that the trained seal on the other side could have just plunked down 30 bucks to ensure nobody could beat him 1 on 1.
Ideally, PvP would provide characters with a selection of equipment for a variety of roles, and have them compete on execution.

But that would invalidate a lot of potential profits generated by the Auction House Tax, and Blizzard can't have that!
