Im glad you got banned if you are upset from getting kicked from D3 for the simple reason not to waste your time with a poorly made game.
How is it poorly made? Sure they have been making some stupid decesions as of late, but the game itself is quite solid.
not even stupid decisions all the classes are the same, the quests are mediocre at best. Only the Auction house is only worthwhile as shopkeeping sell you practicly 90% useless wargear and punishes you if you dont use it. The game has no runes, and the bracket between green items (not legendary) is way too distanced.

All I know is that a lot of people jumped on the wagon blaming Blizzard for putting the banhammer on a guy. Everyone is assuming his innocence, but his story isn't solid. WINE didn't cause his Ban.
I thought it was a lot more than one guy?

I don't know why on earth anyone would actually want to play games on WINE rather than just a windows partition, unless they've got some really really powerful hardware. My Linux laptop struggles to play games from the late 90's using WINE, but the Windows partition will run games up to about 5 years ago. If players want to play on WINE though, Blizzard should just let them, as I imagine that keeping people playing should be their number one priority right now, considering all the problems they've had.
It's mainly for convenience of not rebooting to play a game if your main OS is Linux, but yeah dual booting is often just easier as WINE can be really hit and miss when it comes to getting games running.

On topic:

It is really poor form for Blizzard to ban them for using WINE. I mine they still bought the game and want to play, so why block from doing that on the platform of their choice. In fact the knowledge that people are using WINE is a strong indicator that people want native Linux support for games. Maybe instead of banning Blizzard could look into a Linux/Mac port, that would bring Blizzard alot good will within the community.

They were not banned for using WINE. There is a freaking screen not far above.

Official Blizzard poster:
Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned ? cheating will.

Hmm... several users report a bug. I tried to run the program using a configuration I think is the same, and I didn't experience the bug. Therefore, the bug does not exist.

Good logic, there.

I think this amounts to coincidence with a few people using Wine who also were possibly cheating.

As shown above, and in other sources, MANY people are still running D3 successfully via Wine.

Hopefully it's just seeing a pattern where none exists.

Ok, here we go...

These players assert that they have not cheated. Blizzard community manager Bashiok has responded to these claims, saying that players are banned for cheating, not for running benevolent software. "We've extensively tested for false positive situations, including replicating system setups for those who have posted claiming they were banned unfairly," he writes. "We've not found any situations that could produce a false positive, have found that the circumstances for which they were banned were clear and accurate, and we are extremely confident in our findings.

"Playing the game on Linux, although not officially supported, will not get you banned ? cheating will."

A Reddit post (now complete with a "[Misleading Title]" preface) saw more Wine players speak up, saying that they can play with no problems. It appears the bans themselves may be more isolated than the initial thread made them appear, and they may be less scandalous, at least on Blizzard's end. The moral of the story is, as always: Don't cheat, whiners Winers.

Well... that clears that up. Seems that the only ones at fault here were the cheaters who thought they could just blame Blizzard for their actions.

I'd rather they ban spammers. I was playing last night and some jerkoff kept spamming the chat field with gibberish that didn't make sense to me.

It is hard to say just how valid this may actually be, but one thing about this can be assured. Blizzard is infallible so I am sure that there are legit players that have been wrongly banned as a result of their anti-cheat giving a false positive.

If Blizzard doesn't want Linux Based OS installs to play the game then all they need to do is implement OS verification. If you are on Linux and log in to play the requirements are not met and you are informed that your system does not meet them and not allowed to log on. Don't ban legit players just for playing the game on an unsupported OS.

If that is in fact what they are doing that is.

No no, it wasn't that. I can usually recognize foreign languages. It was some other kind of gibberish I could make any sense out of. Like it was a web url repeated 5 or 6 times plus some other nonsense, that was clearly in english, but I couldn't make any sense of it. And it was the exact same message repeated every 2 minutes or so.

What gets me is that there are actually people in that thread defending Blizzard, basically saying "herp derp it says Windows. They told you what you could use, you're asking for a ban." Industry apologists, forget how they work, are they even sentient?

Edit: And then I noticed that, apparently, Wine isn't the probem, actual cheat software is. Even if that's true, the above stands, since the apologists were defending Blizzard for banning hypothetical Wine users, not cheaters.
