I was reading this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dice_Man] fascinating book about a man who makes decisions based on the casting of dice. Although so far it hasn't changed my life, I recalled having bought two pretty dice many years ago and decided that I should jump out of the window if the casting came out as 1. Frankly I wasn't surprised when it came out as 1 (being a very unlucky person) so I decided to go for 2. Again, bad luck.
Obviously I am not going to do anything stupid, but it made me wonder about luck in general.

Have you ever taken an important decision by say, flipping a coin or throwing a dice die?

How about a trivial one that you are totally indifferent about?

[small] yeah I know it's dice not dices please don't kill me :p[/small]

No, when an important decision comes along I weigh the pro's and con's and make the decision myself. I don't leave it up to chance, that's not a smart way to handle things.

Umm, I once decided to play through all of New Vegas, deciding all moral choices with dice rolls, and occasionally I make trivial decisions based on the coin flip, but that's mainly as a way of going to my friends "Look! I'm so crazy!" I admit, and I should probably stop doing it.

I've sometimes used a coin toss to decide something that I'm indifferent about, like whether to eat on campus or join friends off campus. Or whether to jump out the window (PARKOUR!!)

But nothing really important. Because my luck is absolute garbage tripe.

Dice is plural. Dices is not a word.
Die is the singular of dice.

Also, Luck does not exist. Only chance.

Just putting it out there.

I rarely make a decision based on chance. If I can't decide, the idea of losing the option (by tossing/flipping a coin) usually spurs me to make a decision.

It's a good way to figure out which option is more desirable to me quickly. But I don't recall the last time I made a decision based on a coin flip.

I use dice regularly for D&D though. Fun fact.

Hmm...sounds like I should pick that book up.

Anyways, I don't leave decisions up to chance, it can get really scary in that regard, especially if it's important ones. I just think about it for hours or days, if I have that kind of time, until I reach a conclusion that I can live with.

I choose what college I was going to go to via coin toss and I choose to go to uni because of another coin toss.

In fact, if you can settle it via coin, I probably will.

Flipping a coin is a great way to find out which choice you really want more. If you feel like wanting to flip again, you know for sure that you want the other option more. It works for me, at least. Although, I can't even remember the last time I had to make a choice and couldn't.

(Also, I know this is nitpicking, but you probably mean "Dice and suicide" and "casting of a die" instead of "dices and suicide" and "casting of a dice".)

For me, if a coin is being flipped I start to want one of the decisions over the other thus making the decision.

Yeah, I've done it when I can't decide. But I often ignore the result. It's more like it helps you figure out which choice you actually want to make.

The dice help you figure it out by giving a random result, and then you can see how you feel about that result.

Damn it. Why the hell can't I find the Futurama clip where Al Gore tells Gary Gygax, "Put the dice away, before I take them away." on youtube? Can someone get on that?

Anyway, back on topic, I've always said "Flip a coin. If lands heads, do [A]. If it lands tails, do . If it lands on its side, suicide."

Ha! I too have a similar dilemma and imagined settling that via the throw of a die. ^^

That's an interesting theory you got there.

I must apologise for any grammatical or syntax errors, I haven't used my English to such an extend for weeks.

A book based on Harvey "Two Face" Dent, from the Batman mythos?
Or was this guy first with the idea?

On a sidenote, now I know why HTC or Vodafone preloaded a DICE app on my Sensation!
It even does everything from 5 to 21 sided dice, our choice of 1, 2 or 3 to roll at once!
(Yes, it's a stupid app)

Well this is similar to deciding something on a coin flip. If you can't decide something flip a coin. If you don't like the result of the coin flip then you know which way you were leaning in the first place.

But what do you do if you have more than two options? Say you have 6 flavours of icecream to pick from. That's where the die comes in handy.

On topic: Yeah, it's an interesting book, but it got a bit sexual at parts for me and after the initial WOW-factor of some of the crazy stuff the guy was risking doing, I became somewhat bored.

Sounds like a bit of a cop out to me.... a way to shift responsibility off of yourself.. at least thats how it came across when I read it

Im a pros and cons man myself too... the only time i use coin tosses or leave things up to chance is when my girlfriend and I are both apathetic to something (ie what to have for dinner) or both differ in opinion (ie what to have for dinner)

I either whittle it down to two options or I just choose. I said if I can settle it by coin, not all the time.

Not really, wasn't bothered either way and i'm a "just make a damn decision so it doesn't bite you in the ass for choosing late" sorta dude.
