Did I seriously just hear someone say that?

My work takes me various places at times. Today I visited a clients site and while signing in at the front desk I overheard a conversation between employees. I wasn't paying too much attention to it; something about kids moving out and migraines. But then a female said a comment that took me by a bit of surprise...
Maybe it's because of that defective chromosome you have, you know; the one with the broken leg.
...I've heard this being thrown around in various circles online, but I never really expected someone to casually throw that out there in normal idle chit chat. I didn't say anything, and to be honest I'm not even sure how I want to react.

In context, she said it to someone she worked with and it was probably more playful banter than anything else. But I could tell it put the male off a little bit, as he deflected the comment and avoided the discussion around the idea. This was a place of business that had nothing to do with medicine, biology or anything related to chromosomes.

What do you think?

It was probably just a joke. Despite HR's efforts people will still be themselves when they're around those that they are comfortable with. I make off-color jokes with some co-workers too... you just have to be careful about it and mindful of who's within earshot.

Some people will say things that they don't think is a big deal, but other people will find offensive or disturbing. For instance...

I was hanging out with a friend of mine when I told her I was going to home school my children if I had any. She responded with "Don't do that. They will end up worse than you." It didn't hit me until years later how jacked up that was. But I do agree partially with her statement. I shouldn't home school my kids. High School is where I learned to hate people and if my kids don't grow up with a healthy dose of misanthropy then I've failed has a father.

A friend of mine was in the patrol base's cafeteria during his tour of Afghanistan when two members of the RAF regiment (who are not widely respected) voiced their annoyance at the base being put on alert again, complaining "why can't the infantry stop stepping on IEDs?"

He and the other officers managed to vacate the premises just before a large crowd of soldiers - some of whom had had comrades killed in IED blasts - threw themselves at the two RAF men, who spent the next few weeks recovering in the hospital.

Maybe it depends on the time and the place.
