I loved ME3, the ending was meh-ish but I've seen far worse, I haven't touched the new endings yet because I plan on going through the entire series again but I want to wait a year or so.

It didn't ruin it at all for me. Yes the ending may have been a little terribad, but that in no way affects my opinion of the first two games or the fun I had playing through ME3.

I wouldn't put it that far but I didn't like ME3 all that much. The story was fine and I actually liked the ending, it's just that I didn't like the gameplay. If I want Gears of War, I'll go play Gears of War. When I want a BioWare shooter, I go play Mass Effect. By then end, the gameplay was completely different from the first game and I didn't like the path that it had taken.

I will probably buy Mass Effect stuff again though.

On a more serious note, while I doubt I would have gotten worked up enough to join the Retake Mass Effect people, I do think it was a good thing in the end. The extended cut really does improve the ending significantly, and we wouldn't have gotten it if people weren't abloo bloo bloo-ing.

i just finished mass effect 2 and ordered mass effect 3. im looking forward to the fantastic and completely satisfying ending that ive heard so much about. seriously though, i cant imagine an ending ruining a game for me if i liked the story and gameplay up to that point. i mean honestly, i found mass effect pretty boring in every way, but i got mass effect 2 because i was intrigued by the idea of my decisions carrying over (plus me 2 was on sale for like $5). i kept hearing the me2 had better game play but the story wasnt as good. i thought the story of mass effect 2 was much more interesting than the first game and the writing for the characters was just a thousand times better. it always felt awkward in mass effect one that someone named joker, who is voiced by seth green, wasnt funny at all. i loved that he was constantly cracking jokes, in mass effect 2. and it goes without saying that the gameplay felt a thousand times better

wait, what was my point? i dont really remember but in any case, loved mass effect 2 and a shitty ending wouldnt make me forget how much i enjoyed playing the game up to the ending. i would certainly be happy to buy another mass effect game (as long as its not like an rts or some genre i dont enjoy playing, and id like it if it didnt have a multiplayer mode thats more or less forced upon you, like i heard me3 does). bear in mind though, that i havent played mass effect 3 yet

I think there is plenty of room for additional Mass Effect gaming. I hated the ending, disliked most of the tone of the ME3, but I think it is salvageable. I'd especially enjoy seeing a prequel.

I've decided not to buy another Bioware product at all until E.A no longer owns the company or it goes entirely out of business. Make no mistake, I'm almost sure that many people at Bioware would rather it be an independent company again too, I really doubt most of the ground floor people -love- E.A.
Because of that corporation's history and it's sordid practices very, very much affecting Bioware's output starting with Dragon Age 2, I cannot in all good faith give them any money, even if they are getting it through one of my, thus far, favorite development studios.

Yes and no. The ending of ME3 retconned some rather important earlier plot points, and unraveled quite a bit of the core story. As such, it definitely detracted from the series as a whole.

It won't stop me from enjoying ME1,2 and the first 95% of 3, but it did do quite a bit of damage to canonical lore.

It also proved to me that Bioware is no longer capable of delivering games of the same level of quality they used to, and as such I will no longer be buying any of their games.

I love this, everyone is so pissed about the ending to a game that was phenomenal! The combat and core gameplay mechanics were on par with the uncharted and gears games, that's a great thing! There was emotional plot threads that made people upset, a game truly made someone feel for a character! That's a victory in and of itself (I don't care if other games have done it, this is still something)!!! The Art style while still a little underpowered in some areas was gorgeous in most others! Look at Liara's Facial animations!

If anything the first mass effect ruined mass effect for me, what the fuck was up with that game man. It was pretty awful in my opinion.

So yeah I will buy other mass effect things, because Mass Effect 2 was great, and Mass Effect 3 was one of the best games I've ever played from a story AND a gameplay perspective. I love the Mass Effect sequels (2&3) and I would gladly buy another game that played similarly in the same universe with a similar style.

I hated ME 1 b/c there was no choice, not even the previous bioware good/evil duality, all you chose was Shepherd's attitude (which is different from his motives). Wrex was the only character I liked and you weren't allowed to save the genophage cure. While that potential option was left out an irrelevant one (Virmere) was hyped. The entire game you know Saren's the enemy but can't go after him for no reason until the end. Finally the enemy's a robot that -should you waste time talking to him- just boasts and makes vague statements rather than revealing its' origin or why it wipes out all life.

ME 2 I enjoyed. I went in with no expectations for a good plot. I liked all the party members except for Token. The combat was enjoyable this time around instead of boring. The whole game being prep for multiple endings for the final mission was cool.

Still when I look at the series there's 1 of 2 ways to evaluate it

1) Compared to most games it's above-average and becoming a decent shooter.

2) Compared to RPGs, even Bioware's older works, they suck.

Although I enjoyed ME2 I tend to describe it negatively b/c there are so many things Bioware CHOSE to make wrong about it. It's not like bugs in FNV where you can go
"Obsidian decided to make more content than they'd time to fix"
it's basic design and story decisions where Bioware worked to make the product worse.

ME3 had some combat improvements but it's plot and hurried nature made it shit the whole way through, preventing any investment in the story. Instead of finally bringing back Wrex or returning ME2 party members like Jack we get a ****** Ronnie and retcon prothean.

Not even close. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely hated the ending with a passion, I thought it was absolutely horrible, but honestly, with the Extended Cut out now, it's not too bad, hell, I actually think the Synthesis ending was pretty good, while Control was pretty good, and Destroy was decent. Refusal kinda irked me, though it made sense I suppose, but anyways, I went off into a rant. No, it didn't ruin the series for me, I'm going to be more wary from now on since I believe EA is the main reason for the shit ending, and now that I've seen what they can and will do, I'll be paying a bit more attention to the changes coming and how they look, but overall, I still think ME3 was pretty damn good, I refuse to let a simple ten minute fuckup ruin one of my favorite series' for me.

In a word: Yes.

In more than a word: All the problems I had with ME3 stem from misplaced priorities. Keeping it limited to ME3, it was the multiplayer over the ending.

Going broader than that: Cumulative choices were having less and less bearing on the plot the further I went into the game. By the time you're facing down the big bad and Starchild right after, the scope of the story was simply too big to make anything seem truly meaningful.

Pondering this problem over the months, I've only concluded that Bioware should have ironed the story out even before starting production on even ME2 (design ME1 to be flexible, to see if there will even be a sequel). As it stands, we're looking at the same problem that ruined Deus Ex: Human Revolution for me.
The one and only MAJOR flaw with that game (IMO) was the ending. Not even the boss fights piss me off that much (though they could have been handled much much better).

So yeah, back to ME3. Where do I go from there?

The ME project started out as a cursory nod towards 1970s Sci-Fi, and an ambitious attempt at marrying game-storytelling elemets without it becoming a fractal nightmare (branching narrative becomes more complicated, expensive and time consuming to produce at an exponential rate, which is a big reason so few games even attempt it).

It was more risky than usual, or so it seemed at the time.

That said, if the developers cannot (for whatever reason) stick to that core premise; the ONE thing that made the series interesting, then what I'm left with is just another cover-based shooter with occasional neat character elements.

And I'm not really interested in that sort of title.

The endings for ME3, and the way they are implemented renders the entire premise moot. I cannot emphasize enough that with a choice system, the ending payoff is CRITICAL. If you're doing a story of consequence, then the ending should be the sum of the player's actions beyond the usual requisite of "Win/Loss".

It's complicated and risky, but those are the stakes when you aim higher than usual.
Given EA's recent financial woes and HORRID market reputation at this point, I'm not expecting ANYTHING risky or truly ambitious from them or any of their studios again. Definitely not in the near future.

So any future ME games will probably fall under the "Safe, generic, Meh" category.

and I loved the fact I could play as strong Female protagonist with a swashbuckling crew of interesting characters. Mass Effect 3 kept that in spades, resolved some of their stories (Mordin: his big quote = fucking brilliant) and finished it off in a very definitive way (no to be continued bullshit).

I've always thought that the gameplay was little lack luster ME1 Through to 3, but I liked the setting and characters enough to go ahead. Still more entertaining than Mario.

NOt at all, actually. I just beat ME1 again and it was all the more rich because of the stories on the latter games. Interactions with Sovereign and Vigil and discussions about the Protheans was so much more interesting because of those stories. AND at the end of the game, we see the first Turian husk, which is pretty damn cool! I'm not one of those gamers who was too bothered with retcons in later games. These are 3 games over many years by many different people exploring different ideas for story, themes and gameplay. Very little was actually retconned in a 'didn't happen' kind of way. Most of the changes were explained by story or simply explainable by one's own imagination. Mass Effect is perhaps in the top 5 game trilogies ever made. All this effort to keep whining about the third and even the second games is pointless. They are done, deal with it and enjoy what's there. We can cry forever if it's for what 'could have been'. I prefer not to.

I'd say the game and everything around it ruined Mass Effect for me. On the one hand you have Bioware making terrible terrible design and story decisions, some absolutely laughable others that were almost insultingly stupid. Then on the other you have the "hardcore fans" who end up saying the game was just a complete disaster (which it wasn't) and shitting on the ending to the point Bioware caved to fan pressure which still kinda makes me skin crawl its so repulsive from a creative standpoint.

I dunno when the dust finally settled and I played the new ending I just stopped caring about the franchise entirely. Just like with Star Wars when the prequels came out I just want nothing to do with it anymore. And with the doctors leaving I really don't think Bioware will ever be the company they once were, a sad ending to a great studio I reckon it will be in a few years.

No. But it came close. The ending, before the Extended Cut, sucked ass. But what is really driving me away iis ths new orientation towards action. Bioware is a great RPG house. Their action is, at best, slightly worst than mediocre. When playing Me2 and 3 in insanity, my worst enemy was the lack of precise control over the character. Their vehicle sections are a joke, ever since the racing sections from Kotor.
The action is there only as a novelty, I would never pick a Bioware game over a Halo or Call of Duty when I want to shoot some friends.

If the narrative stays good and the action is downplayed, or totally upgraded ( a good start would be to let us players map our own buttons, so we could avoid getting stuck to walls when we want to run), I would still by a ME product.
