Just read the blogs if you still have doubts of Other M completely fucking up Metroid in every way, even gameplay that borrows from Metroid Fusion. But at least the latter managed to give a sense of being a bigger and uncontrollable linear experience thanks to the amount of set pieces that makes you believe that you have outsmarted the computer)

At least just to have another perspective of how the Metroid formula AND the characterization of Samus is viewed by other persons (the blog argues that Samus DID have a character and such)

I wouldnt say it hurt the series. One notoriously awful entry into a fanchise doesnt completely tank it. More so, nintendo now know what does and doesnt work, which will go a long way towards making the next game a hit.

I'd personally like to see them switch around between the classic 2D style and something like the Prime series. Sort of like how we had Mario Galaxy one year, and them SMBs the next.

Seeing as Adam Malkovich was the highest ranking Federation officer aboard a Federation vessel I'd say he had every right to issue orders. Now whether Samus should have obeyed them or not is a different story

^ This.

They need to get Sakamoto away from the series, and move forward with either another Prime-like entry or go for Dread. I thought it was horrible - a complete waste of time for the character and the universe.

Wish the series were multi-platform. It is clear that those games aren't system sellers anymore. Why not try other systems as well to improve sales? Or am i looking from the wrong angle here?
Because that sort of carry on hasn't been done for first-party/second-party Nintendo games since the 1980s, perhaps. Sony doesn't allow the Gran Turismo to be sold to multiple platforms; nor does Microsoft allow the Halo series to be sold outside of Windows and the Xbox consoles. Do you seriously think that Nintendo are going to farm out one of their Big Three franchises to other consoles?
If someone would do it first, i believe that would be Nintendo since i see them to be lesser evil of the trio.Besides. Neither Sony nor microsoft develops games or have IP's as much as Nintendo.

I had a big quoteblock, then I realized it was just TOO big.

1. Other M sold horribly. Which is good, I guess. The Metroid series does NOT do well in sales - though it's pretty often Nintendo's own fault: releasing Prime 2 in the same week as Halo 2...putting out Super Metroid in the last year of the SNES's life-cycle? You can see why there was no Metroid 64. Anyway, the downside of this is that Nintendo will put away the Metroid franchise for a while. Whether that's for a couple years or a whole console generation, who knows? But in the same way that a superhero movie tanking tells Hollywood "we don't like superhero movies anymore" instead of "we don't like bad movies", this sends the message to Nintendo that now even the US doesn't like Metroid. So do what Jim told you to do, and complain. Keep complaining about a two year old game, my friends. Join me!

2. Corruption was the most linear Prime game, no doubt, but it was also the most action-focused. Of the three, it was the only that was any kind of actual FPS. Also, God did not lock and unlock doors in order to guide you to your destination. It was the first Metroid game I played, though, so I cannot look at it entirely objectively. Moving right along.

3. The Metroid manga sucked. I read part of it (most of it, I think), and no, you did not "miss it", it was never released outside of Japan. Only the awesome and inexorable force known as internet piracy has given us access to it. Now, it was pretty damn bad (one reason simply being that it didn't look very good), but unlike Other M it portrayed Samus in the formative moments of her character (ironic that no game has ever depicted Samus' key/sole character arc), including the Space Pirate attack on K-2L led by Ridley, the death of her parents, her being brought up by the Chozo, and the Space Pirate attack on Zebes that wiped out the Chozo. That is to say, these are the moments for her character through which she became the person she is in the games.

4. Well, I always wanted a Metroid game that was focused on story. As someone once said, "when the gods wish to torment us, they grant our wishes". So now I want a Metroid game where you are plopped onto a barren planet and told "go do this thing. good luck. kthxbai". No orders, no ship transmissions, no weird Chozo statue things that put a dot on your map to tell you where to go. I don't care if it's 2D or 3D (I'd like to see how a really 3D Metroid game that isn't first-person is handled, as well). Also scanning.

I think other M was the best 3D Metroid, because it's the only one that played like a Metroid game. Don't get me wrong, I hundred percent-ed all three prime games, but they were just FPSs with exploration. I want a 3rd person perspective action adventure game more... because that's why I like Metroid?
Well, it's not why most people do, I'd wager. Metroid is ALL about exploration. Prime 3 was divided into planets, but each one wide and explorable. Other M had virtually NO exploration. Metroid has always been about Samus working alone in a cold, unforgiving environment, not being in constant contact with a douche bag barking orders at you.
It's the closest thing we got to the 2D Metroids on a console since the SNES
SO WRONG. Please go play metroid fusion. It's worlds better than other m, a true 2d sidescroller, has no voice acting and minimal dialogue from samus but a way better story.

(GBA is technically a console)

In fact, other M outright stole its biggest plot twist from metroid fusion. Both games even have adam malcovich! And yet adam in fusion is not an insufferable douche, usually.
The federation is secretly cloning metroids a spacestation that you destroy. Again.

The only thing other M had going for it was passably good gameplay, which I did enjoy. Still doesn't measure to the 2D games or primes, though.
i gotta agree with you here, especially the bit about the "plot twist" and game play.

another thing, the scene with Ridely ... i mean really ... shes fought him how many times now? I'd be willing to excuse it if it happened in Zero Mission, since thats the first time she encountered him since the indecent on the mining colony, but Other M takes place basically at the end of the series time line and NOW she freezes up?

right.... not buying it

So...Alien? Since that's what Metroid was based on.

Metroid was originally made by two creators. A few years ago one of them passed away. When M.O.M. (Really fucking clever /sarcasm) came out the remaining creator commented about how it was a sort of magnum opus and this was the story he had wanted to tell from the beginning but he had to compromise with his partner.

I doubt it would be hard to redact the damage, I mean it's Metroid for god's sake they've almost always been critically acclaimed and has Nintendo backing it up but Other M may unfortunately be where the series is going regardless.

Considering that up until this point, Metroid was one of few franchises which every game was of high quality; I'd say Other M did some considerable damage.

Doesn't help the game scaled back media portrayal of women's rights about 20 years.

Once again I think everyone loves to aim for extremes instead of logical. Yes, Other M was a game ruined by a shit story but it hasn't damaged anything on a series that has released mostly quality titles up to then. Sure, The IP himself might not be as strong as it was but I think everyone acknowledges how different this one was developed. I doubt Nintendo would partner with Team Ninja again so all Nintendo has to do is make sure the next one is good, drop Other M on out of canon and it will be like nothing happened. If they mess up the next one however...then we have a image problem.

The reception of Other M was way overblowing it. YES, it was a terribly-told story. NO, it didn't ruin Samus. They focused way too hard on exploring Samus' inner psyche, and left the badassery almost 100% to actions/gameplay, rather than thought and word. It's a game that assumes we know Samus runs around and kills shit and is an utter badass awesome person, and as such it delves into her human side. On paper, it actually sounds decent and makes sense. There's a reason she never freaked out over Ridley's appearances before. Because no other game has shown that part. It's assumed she does feel pain when she's hurt, and there's a lot of personality and emotion that's left out of the 2D games (and eve the 3D ones) simply because that's not in the scope of the game to explore that. Just because Mario never sits down to eat something doesn't mean he can go on forever doing all sorts of crazy princess-saving stuff without a single bite to eat or time to rest.

Honestly, what ruined the story most of all in Other M was the way they told the story, more than the story itself. The voice actor droned on in monotone through most of it. The writing also went way too much into details. There's no such thing as subtlety to them, is there? It would have worked wonders to leave much of it to the imagination, but they went and spelled out everything she was thinking and feeling.

The gameplay was fine, though. It was a bit linear and the controls were wonky and overall I would rate it fairly low on the scale of all the Metroid games, but it ruined nothing permanently. Even if they changed Samus, instead of just focusing way too much on a less-known and more boring aspect of her, there's no reason that is going to stick forever.

I really liked the prime series, especially 1 & 2, but all good things must come to an end.
So I guess I will just wish for a metroid game where samus isn't an emotionally weak selfdeprecating punching bag.
The stoic/silent type fits her just better.
Or any competence at all, really.

also Other M did quite some damage, at least in me feeling "IT COULD'VE BEEN WORTH THE TIME/MONEY SPENT, BUT INSTEAD I GOT THIS."

Nintendo let a bad game stop them from releasing another in the series? HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAAA! Nintendo would release game after game of "Hooray for the KKK!" if it was a popular game in the 80s.

Honestly, I always was more invested in Samus's two-dimensional exploits. If they made a crazy-huge 2-d console game I would leap for joy.

Nintendo is pretty good about shitting out another sequel no matter how the last one went, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
