I think it's the whites in his eyes. White is a terrible color to make tiny details with in sprites if you're viewing on a CRT television. The colors surrounding the white seem to bleed over and you don't even really see the white. So it's for the purpose of not looking terrible.

That... actually makes alot of sense, it's been a while since I've had a TV with that particular problem so I probably would have never thought of that.

Zelda is probably a religious zealot and cursed Gannon. This was the final straw; Gannon could ignore Link when he knocked on his door, but not Zelda, because Zelda is a witch. So she cursed Gannon when he wouldn't turn his life over to Jesus, and turned him into an an anthropomorphic pig. So he kidnaps her, trying to force her to turn him back. Link, also a religious zealot, chases Gannon, and when people claim that Gannon is evil, Link does not correct them because he's a manipulative little asshole. All Gannon really wants is to go home and watch some Kokiris Gone Wild. If people knew the real story, Link would be the bad guy.

I don't know how you didn't see this in the first place. It's pretty obvious.
