The Matrix was decent, I could even forgive the second movie, but at the end it seemed to me they were just trying to be too profound and had no real idea on how to wrap things up.
Some basically cool ideas, but I think it fell apart due to the Warshowski brothers. It was "their" child so to speak, but in the end it was more than they could handle to raise.
Plus I vaguely remember that one of the brothers was coming out of the closet as a cross dressing S&M masochist while the other movies were being made. The whole impression I got from that and other apperances they made was that they didn't seem to be spending as much time invested in the project as they should have.
I can't blame them though, set up is always easier than following through when it comes to projects and stories, and wrapping things up in a satisfying way is the hardest part there is. I think a satisfying conclusion is the biggest test of a writer/director that there is.
I have no real problem with Keanu Reeves to be honest, he does some okay stuff. In many cases I don't think the problem is him, but the people he's working for. Generally speaking you can be the best lead in the world, but if you choose a bad script, or wind up working under a bad director you can't nessicarly save the project (in some cases actors have counterbalanced this, but it's the exception rather than the rule).
Look at someone like Arnold Schwartzneggar he went so far not just because of himself, but because he hooked up with James Cameron who helped make him with some truely awesome movies. He was decent enough to do some good movies outside of this, but had some really bad ones as well (like say "End Of Days" or "Raw Deal").
In comparison guys like Vin Diesel haven't had that kind of benefit, and could have gone places based on their successes (Pitch Black, The Fast and The Furious, XXX), but then picked some really bad scripts and made some bad choices (Chronicles Of Riddick, turning down Fast and The Furious and XXX sequels, doing that Pacifier movie when he wasn't anywhere near as established to make it as amusing as say Kintergarden Cop).
Keanu has the same problem, he'll get a good movie, and then wind up in some horrible bombs. If his name is the big one in the promotions, guess who gets blamed?
